Prudhoe Bay on a SEUC?
« on: May 21, 2009, 12:08:33 AM »

Doing some dreaming for my 55th b-day.....would it be crazy to try for Prudhoe Bay on my SEUC?  Or major risk for trashed bike?  Nothing like 900 miles of gravel roads!

Most anyone who has made the ride will tell you, your bike will never be the same. Depending on the weather and road conditions, things can go real bad.

It's your bike... you'd have one hell of a story to tell either way.

I had one hell of a great time! You can read about it here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=356672

You could make it to the Arctic Circle without too much trouble. Still an achievement!

We went as far as the Circle wayside in 02.  I was on an Ultra and she was on a Dyna Convertible.  When I was cleaning the Ultra in 06 to sell it, I was still able to get "circle dirt" off it.  We rode up the entire way from OKC.  I would say it will certainly do it and you'll have a GREAT time.  But the bike will take at least triple the wear and tear cosmetically from the mileage up north, than it would see in the lower 48.  So you have to decide if the cosmetic wear is worth it.  Obviously, I wouldn't have ANY problems taking a non SE Ultra, but I'd have to think about it for a while before I took our SE's up.  I'm not sure I wouldn't buy an 09 non SE and ride it up and back and then sell it when I got back.

When we went it rained everyday for the first 2 weeks.  They use a very fine calcium chloride powder to reduce dusting when it's dry, but it makes for a very slick mud when wet.  It sticks to everything and gets in everywhere!  I would strongly consider one of the stick on plastic overlays for the fairing, tank and lowers to protect those items from some of the excessive wear.

Wow, what a great trip! I think it's taking me longer to go through your ADV posts than your trip took though   Now I'm getting all fired up to do something like that soon. Damm\, you may have just cost me another bike

Trapperdog,

Crusty's bike looks to be a R1150/1200 GS or GSA, great bikes, I had one I referred to it as my SUV bike, have not gone to Alaska, I had my R1150 GSA at the CVO Nelson GTG as my Jims 120 had grenaded and that all I had left till my Jims was replaced.

You can pick up some good used R1150s or 1200 for reasonable pricing. Sign up for the ADV website www.advrider.com and check out the Bikes For Sale Section you will find a lot of great deals.

Looks like the SEUC ought to stay home for this one.  I don't mind using a bike as it was intended, but I hate to tear it up needlessly.   May have to start checking those GS's out.  Way to go Crusty, thanks for the input!

When you rent through Fly N Ride in Alaska  you sign a paper saying you understand you wont go past certain points of the Highway system in Alaska. I cant remember the highway number but it is the gravel road to the artic circle.
