I was afraid this would happen - lid tether
« on: July 09, 2012, 03:15:01 PM »

Friend with '11 RG Ultra had the retractable tour-pak lid tether break last week.  Luckily he was in his garage and has to park his bike pretty close to the side wall.  So when the cable broke the passenger backrest on the lid contacted the wall and prevented the lid from going all the way over.  No luggage on the lid.  He has just opened it to put something into the tour-pak.

These things look very flimsy to me and I have never been impressed with them.  I may install the standard non-retractable cable on my bike.  It is a lot beefier.

Oh, crap. :o  I agree, they're not very robust-looking and I've thought about replacing mine, too.  This is just proof to go ahead.  In the meantime, I'm going to be extra careful with it.

I've installed the Ultra Brace on my last two bikes. Sturdy and no worries about a cable failing. IMHO the only way to go. :2vrolijk_21:

Been thinking about that. Where do you get it?

Glad you posted this. I thought about switching from the cable to the retractable. Not anymore. :-X

Yeah, trust me, you do NOT want that cable to break. It will bust up the whole side of the pack and it may never align up properly again. I would consider getting longer screws and doubling up the cables. That Ultra Brace is nice too.

Note to self: Add 'check condition of cable assembly' to regular inspection list.

Surprised we haven't heard more of these stories. The retractable tether is not much biger then a 40lb fishing line.  A little scary when you see guys slam open a luggage weighted lid.   Just a matter of time..  :nervous:  The ultra brace is the way to go, I love mine, wished Harley would make this a stock item.

Just noticed E-Glides has the Ultra Brace on Sale....   :2vrolijk_21:

Go with the Ultra Brace. Solid, good quality, and definitely eliminates the tether problem.

Just replace it once a year. It's a four dollar item.

Yikes!  E-Glides sale price brings it down to J&P Cycles normal price.  E-Glide wants $14 shipping and J&P gets $8 shipping.  Guess I'll get it from J&P.

I noticed that the EGlide Goodies website shows model TB-3 while the J&P lists a TB-2.  Wonder what the difference is?  :nixweiss:

Looks like a good product but I am not excited about having to do surgery to the bottom and top tour-pak liners.  Unsure at this point.  May just go to the old tried and true non-retractable cable.
