What happened to the oil/fluids???
« on: July 20, 2012, 07:16:28 PM »

OK, gotta ask this...

Harley 96" to 110" takes 3.5 qts for oil, 1 qt trany, 1qt 6oz for primary. Thats 182 ounces or 5.38 liters. I have a West Marine pump out that measures by the liter. I have two new CVO's and at each complete oil change, I can only manage to get 4.25 liters out. I pump what oil I can get out then capture the rest taking out the drain plugs. Before draining, I check the oil level and they show full. After putting in the new oil, they show full. All measured hot.

Changed oil only today for a buddy including filter. It measured full before I did it. As you can see by the picture, the oil measures barely over 2 liters. I'm figuring 73 ounces at best, probably not quite. I put in 118.3? WTF??? What happened to the oil?

If I recall when draining the trans oil, if you keep the bike on the kickstand if will not drain all of the oil. If the bike is level you will get more out. ( I don't know if this helps answer your question)

I keep the bike upright when changing fluids. I asked the dealer about this and they thought maybe the fluids were shorted from the factory when it came to the CVO's. This was not the case, I always check levels when I buy a new one.

I'm going to assume you are talking about a SERG and a SESG, since those are what your old posts indicate you have/had.  If that's the case, the engine oil capacity is 4.0 quarts, not the 3.5 you mentioned.  Of course, many of us only run 3.5 quarts to reduce carryover into the air cleaner, but official capacity is in fact 4.0 quarts for the Touring models.

When you drain the primary on the late model bikes, it is very difficult to get it drained completely, especially if you leave the bike level instead of on the jiffy stand.  It's not uncommon to leave up to six ounces in the primary on some bikes.  That's a good reason to actually check the level when you add the new fluid instead of just dumping in the full amount.  You don't want excess fluid in the primary (clutch drag).

The engine will always have a small amount of oil left in the crankcase sump that can't be pumped back to the tank.  It's normal to have up to six ounces remaining in the sump.  Minimize this by letting the engine idle on the stand for a couple minutes before shutting it off, to allow as much oil as possible to drain down and be pumped back to the tank.  Don't rev the engine, as that just pumps excess oil into the top end again.

Finally, I don't see in your first post where you accounted for the volume of oil in the oil filter.  Unless you have a filter crusher, you will never come close to actually draining all the oil out of the filter.  Probably a lot easier to just approximate that it holds a pint of oil and not even try to drain it and measure it.

Personally, when I measure the fluids I remove I don't combine them.  If you really want to know how much you are leaving in each hole, drain and measure them separately.

Thanks Jerry. I'm assuming the factory puts the 4 quarts in and they tell you to refill by starting with 3.5 knowing you won't be able to drain it all because of the sump. So I start my measurement based on 3.5 quarts. I drain all I can out of the filter.

I do drain the primary on the jiffy stand, this seems to get me the lowest point.

My calculations still show a little over 32 ounces short.

I dont know if you thought about this or even if your bike has it or not.  the oil cooler will still have some in it and the lines.  but I also agree with jerry.  I personally would not worry that much with the filter and top end when warm and the oil cooler and all the little nooks and crannys that oil can be to have only 32oz. of oil be off.  I like the way you are detailed about checking things.  Dont hurt anything.  todd

Figure this one out, I have changed fluids the last 4 times, takes 4 qts. oil, This time i took it to the dealer (only because of a squeaking noise and vibration that i could not find) They sent back a 1/2 qt. dipstick shows full, Think maybe they didnt change oil filter ?

Out of curiosity what made you check the fluid amount after removing it?

I'm not knocking it....

I send my Buell's and my Powerstorke oil out for testing often.....

I have the 08 6.4 with 107k on it so far. I dump the oil, filter and fuel filters around the 6k+/- mark. This motor has had syn in it since new, I have no idea if that helps or ? but for the few extra dollars that is what I run. No injectors acting stupid yet, they aren't allowed to as it's not time for a new truck yet.... it's time for a new bike  :orange: then in a few years a new truck....

I have to take the oil to a recycle station in town and I find it easier and less mess when I use the pump out thingamajig.
