Aluminum Foil as a Rust Remover and Polisher?
« on: July 18, 2013, 04:07:11 PM »

Well it just goes to show that you're never too old or young to learn a few more cleaning tricks.  A buddy of mine showed me last night that using Reynolds wrap Aluminum foil can be used as a rust remover on Chrome!  I said no way, and he showed me the following on the chrome bumper of his 1955 Ford T-bird:  Take a small sheet from the dispenser and fold it into a square big enough to hold in your fingers.  Wet it with water and rub the chrome area affected with rust. And wallah the rust is gone.  Now as time goes on during the process of rubbing it the foil will obtain a dark look on it.  This is a chemical reaction between the two metals and is actually now being turned into a polisher that not only cleans the rust off but also polishes the chrome without leaving a residue or scratches.  I was shocked to see this as I had never heard of this.  He told me he had learned this from an old Harley rider that never used anything but aluminum foil to polish his chrome on his bikes.  Note i said "OLD" and not sure if this will be okay for today foreign made chrome that is now on our bikes.   Just something to ponder if you have nothing to polish with in the garage from the shelf.  Go to the kitchen and grab the Reynolds Wrap and give it a go!

Not sure about the (chemical reaction) comments.   But steel wool is available in different grades..........(0000) is the very fine grade and will NOT scratch your chrome and does a great job of removing rust and/or other things too.
