Windshield Care Cleaner/Polish
« on: December 30, 2012, 12:30:25 AM »

Hi Guys,
My windshield is getting bad. Bugs leave spots and some pits. What is the best Polish and cleaner?
Clean then Polish? Or Polish then clean? What are the best for products for the windshields? Could it be used on chrome or paint also?
Thanks

I have been using the cleaner from Cee Baileys as well as the special paper towels they sell for the last 5000 miles. Has kept it looking just about new even after some major "bugged out" rides. I have used some "quick wax" a couple of times after cleaning it but didn't seem to make any difference on the next ride.

One thing you want to do is get them off as soon as possible. The longer they stay on the longer the opportunity for the chemical reaction of the (bugs) breaking down (decomposing) on the plastic (possibly causing the pitting). I've been known to clean my windshield on gas stops while traveling and always wipe it (and the entire bike) after each ride.

Make sure that you always clean and wipe up and down  so if you do scratch the windshield you will not see them as much.   Billy

I clean the bugs off at the end of every ride.  Typically use HD bug remover or a spray shine detailer. I also use a microfiber cloth rather than a towel (never use paper towels).  Try Novus plastic polish....comes in 3 grades.  #3 is for deeper scratches.

Try using  hydrogen peroxide to get the bugs off.  Spray it on wait a couple of minutes and wipe the bugs off.  Works better then most of the other things I have tried.

I've had a Klock Werks, solid black windshield for sometime now. Has seen a lot of long hauls, and shows no signs of scratches or bug stains. I usually clean it every gas stop with a detail spray during a trip, but normally I use just super hot water. I just lay the mitt on the windshield, without rubbing and the bugs come right off. After that I put on a coat of Wolfgang Carnauba wax. The windshield still looks brand new!

X2.  I carry cleaner and microfiber towels.  I clean at almost every stop on windshield and wipe bike down at the end of every ride.  It is rare that I need to get the water hose out and do a soapy wash.  Usually only if I get caught in rain.

I used to do that chit, too, Judy.  Then I went on a two week trip with Tommy.  That only lasted for the first week.  Here's what a 2004 SEEG looks like after 2,000+ miles through MT, ID, WY, SD, IA, and IL! :)  Every one still came off! LOL

I keep some of those Windex wipe things (non ammonia type) that come in the flat plastic baggie looking thing.  You can find them at Wal Mart and probably elsewhere.  They are useful at gas stops for getting the new bugs off the windshield and/or your helmet parts.

For a real cleaning polishing of the windshield, I've used the Novus product and now use a Griot's Garage product.  Both work well.

At the end of a riding day, I'll wipe the worst stuff off with Griot's Garage Speed Shine, or Spray Wash and one of their microfiber towels.
