Price opinion on Deuce
« on: November 11, 2010, 07:53:28 PM »

I saw a Gold and black Deuce this summer and I really like the way looked. I just spotted one for sale near by and was thinking of taking a look. What is a nice Deuce with with 4K miles worth? Is there any issues with the 2003 to look for before buying?
Thanks,
Tom

Just bought this one 2 months ago, paid $15,900.00. I thought that was fair. Has 11,000 miles on it. '04 SE Deuce.

I was in Longhorn HD in Grand Prairie, TX last week.  They had two of the gold CVO Deuces, both looked immaculate and were $15,999.

The blue is nice too. The more I look at them the more I like the SE Duece. Are there any issues? Is 2003 a good year? Motor or tranny issues?

If you are in the right place at the right time I would say somewhere between $12,500 and $16k depending on milage and condition.  There are tons of bikes for sale at super prices in this economy.

Lotsa SE Deuces for sale on ebay - both 2003's and '04's all colors. Got my wife's last year for just north of $16K but it had a windshield, nice billet headlight and about $2K in other accessories I was going to add already included. I would agree, a great deal would be $12-$13K for a bone stock bike. I haven't seen any of them sell on ebay for north of $14 in quite a while. I figure the value drops about $1K/year, regardless of how low the mileage is.

There are a few minor upgrades/updates on the 2003 vs the 2004, the most singificant is the hydraulic clutch.

I've got a ton of upgrades on mine with 14,000 miles and perfectly mint - new tires, etc, and I started listing it around $19,900 last May. I went down every other week to $17,500 and never got a call though August.  It's been sitting covered since May, and it's gonna stay sitting for that. For the kind of stupid money people are selling these things for, I'll just stick mine behind the bar.

It's crazy when you see $25,000 bikes selling for the same amount of money as a run of the mill Deuce that sold for $10,000 less.

I don't get it, but if you're a buyer, now might be a perfect time to shop. If the economy turns around, the SED values have to start rebounding at some point.

Wrong! That's unless YOUR 03 was upgraded, as NO '03 came with the Hydralic Clutch- Do you have a fluid reservior on your left handgrip? There are a few other things that are different too. I had a list that I got somewhere that actually pointed everything out - mostly cosmetic, but there were a few little mechanical things too, like different gauges, larger 180 rear tire vs the 160, etc.

Charlie,

You kind of messed up the quote there, but you really, really have to take a look at both bikes side by side, as the differences I've mentioned is true. Doesn't mean one is better than the other, but were are some slight improvements:

- The '03 came with a 160 rear tire vs the 180 rear tire on the '04.
- The '03 came with 6 spoke slotted wheels vs the 3 spoke Detonators on the '04.
- The '03 came with a cable clutch vs the Hydralic Actuated Clutch on the '04. Fact!  Do you have a reservior on the left handle bar?? It's cut and dry man.
- The '03 came with silver faced gauges vs the Spun Aluminum Gauges on the '04.
- The '04 had a leather perferrated seat whereas the '03 did not.
- There was also a very few minor mechanical changes, but nothing like the above. I think '04 got the auto adjusting chain tensioner, that the '03 lacked. Minor stuff.
- The rest are purely cosmetic. '03 had the chrome rear struts and oil tank vs the painted on the '04.

That all said, I obviously think both of them are fantastic looking bikes as evidenced by my ownership.

I'm not saying one is better than the other, but they absolutely are a little different.

Take a look at the pic I grabbed and see if you notice anything that stands out. Here's a hint: Gauges & left Handlebar vs Right.

first of all I know what a hyd. clutch is I am a tech by trade, the pic you have shown does not have clutch maybe a very early one all, virtually all the 03's I have seen has the hyd. clutch, mine came with it dealer did not install it listed in the brochure as having hyd clutch so for the sake of argument we're both right as this is no longer that important to me, there may have been a change in production somewhere down the line

After admiring your bike for the last couple of years since I first layed eyes on her, I assumed you must be mechanically inclined to some degree - Hell of a nice looking bike! However, I just think with all the mods you've done, and as far from stock that you've gotten, you just might not remember how she really was at one time. You gotta admit, there's not a lot left thats stock anymore. That said, no '03 came with a hydraulic clutch, and the '04 brochure lists the hydraulic actuated clutch as a new 2004 feature, but then again, it's not a big deal.  Don't mean to kick an old guy losing his memory when he's down - OK, maybe a little!  Have a great weekend...

well, the only thing stock on my bike is the console on the tank!! and you're right that its been a long time, I would have sworn that it came with a hyd. clutch I know it has it now, cuz well maybe I put it on and just don't remember doing it. well that said if I'm wrong I apologize, I guess it was possible, just find it hard to believe that I actually forgot a mod on my bike!! I lived that bike for a couple years, ya know!! I looked for the brochure for the 03, can't find it, but I searched other sources and don't see it anywhere. by the way, I did every mod on that bike myself, except the paint so I do have some skills!!! just "memory" might not be one of them!!!

I do like the 04, nice color, but the biggest difference is the fact that there is only one 100th Aniversary year, and thats 2003.

The values arent that different right now, but given the build numbers, 2950 (??) of the 2003, this will be the year that will be more desirable in the future.  It may take anouther 15 years, but Ill take the 100th Aniversary over the 101.

I know that even at this time, in Canada at least, there are only about 10 of the 2003 SE Dueces (That I have been able to track down)  There are 2 that the owner of Gasoline Alley Harley in Red Deer Alberta has, mothballed them to my knowledge, mine, one other that a real sweet honey rides and a few others that I have heard of and thats it.  Im sure there are alot more, but no one that I have talked to can give me any idea how many were shipped here, or how many have been imported since release in 2003.

Thats my 2 pennies (2.001 cents in american, sure feels nice to say that for a change hahaha).

BTW if anyone has any more infor on build #'s etc for the 2003s, let me know!!

Really enjoyed the thread. My "doesn't matter" opinion is.... the 03 was without the hydraulic clutch, and the o4 color scheme of yellow and cobalt blue really made me jealous along with the upgraded custom gauges. But after experiencing the 100th "welcome home" tour in Milwaukee, and the unbelievable 1.5 million bikers invaded a city of only 1.4 million for 8 days. The 2003 nostalgia value and history make me feel like the Centennial Gold with gold leaf trim will be the ultimate experience and collectors choice. Especially if you were lucky enough to experience the "Party", and gobble up all those gold coins just for visiting all 4 plants, and to tour the old location, and then see the high tech manufacturing was truly special. The other honorable mention was actually visiting the "Willie G"  CVO operations which is behind the original location. The vision and chances that Harley took in the early eighties, are a direct result of ALL of these Screamin Eagle/ CVO/V-ROD/and BUELL products that we have come to enjoy. Granted some more than others. But when Willie G and his investors bought Harley back from AMF,(aka the bowling alley company), they were on the verge of extinction and in bankruptcy.
For me, the only thing better than owning a piece of the American dream and success story, is being Lucky enough to own both the 2003 SE Deuce, and the SE Road King. As for their value. I will tell you I over paid for both. But I also got to be part of the celebration and the 100,000 bike parade down Wisconsin avenue waving to the crowds who were lined up for over 40 miles. 2003 will always be the grand celebration. Just the bands and celebrities that were there will never be duplicated. And not that I am complaining, but the only downer was the headliner. At the time was rumoured to be either  Rolling Stones, or even reuniting Led Zeppelin......It ended up being Elton John... and he sang Rocket man. Still no regrets.  Hope I contributed.

Guys,
The 2003 Road King has the hydraulic clutch and the first production 103 CI. Unless my alltimers is kicking in! It has been a great bike! I would like to buy a 2003 Deuce for the collection and probably will.
