Front drive belt pulley
« on: April 23, 2004, 01:40:15 PM »

Do any of you road glide riders know what size pulley we have in front. I want to go up to a larger size, I feel these bikes are geared a little short, I am about 500 rpms higher then most of the newer bikes. I think HD did this to make them quicker at the start but they feel buzzy at 80. Thanks for reading.

These bikes have a 32 tooth transmission sprocket, you can get a 33 tooth from Andrews which drops the RPM about 250. It's a great combination. They have a 34 tooth but it is just too high. DON"T use the 33 tooth from BDL---they only last about 7500 miles. Ride and have FUN!!

i have the same issue. called the factory and they said we have the same ratios on all pulleys and gears as all big twins. but why the 400 rpm diffrence? did you buy the bike brand new.i would like to come to a conclusion. do you have minor ping on low rpm?

We don't have the same gearing as the other roadglides. The Screaming Eagle has a 24 tooth engine and a 37 tooth clutch sprocket.  The other bikes have a 25 tooth engine and a 36 tooth clutch. I went to the 25/36 and it dropped the rpm about 300. It is much cheaper to go with the 33 tooth Andrews transmission pulley though to do about the same thing.

Thanx for the heads up.I had my supplement manual and the stock road glide manual and it said the gearing was the same.I even called harleys cvo people and they said the same. You can totally tell just by riding the bike its diffrent.( why) do you have more ping at low rpms with your new gearing.Does anybody have the timing chains removed in place of the s& s gears,headpan62

Hi headpan62. I am running S&S 510 gear drive on my 01SERG, I have also regeared as hogdogz it runs great I also put in the Baker 6speed It is a little tall at 75 but great at 80.
If you can find someone who replaced the drive chain with belt drive the regearing is the best way to go. Good Luck enjoy your Glide.

I find your topic interesting as I thought all current model HD's were geared the same. 25-36 primary and 70-32 secondary. I have an 05 FLHTCSE2 and that is how mine is geared with a 3.15 final drive. I feel my bike is geared a bit too tall so I am going with a 24 tooth compensating sprocket (possibly a 37 tooth clutch sprocket) and that will put the final drive back to where it used to be for the FL's(3.37). To get the best of both worlds I am also going to install a 6 speed, then I will have aggressive off the line gearing along with good cruising ability [smiley=laugh.gif].
Also, how is that . 510 S&S compared to the stock cams? I know the lift is shorter than the stock CVO253 (.530 lift) but I bet the duration is a bit longer, so it probably pulls better.

Mas ,
I replaced the engine sprocked on mine with a 24t and left the 36t clutch sprocket in place. The chain adjuster took up the slack ok but put it at a higher angle of attack to the adjuster shoe. It made for a noiser primary. If I were going to put in a 6 speed I would try the 24x37 gears to keep the chains angle more stock. Put a pencil to it and see what the final drive would be with the six speed and the softtail gearing. Im not shure where it would fall.
But I can say this. The regearing I did shure made a differance in the Rockies this fall.

hd-51,Thanx for the info. The belt pully would be the way for me to go(cheapest way.)But again the cam chain vers. the gear drive by s&s.Is the gear drive alot more whiney.(noisey).Again at low rpm in hot weather I get ping. so im afraid if i change the gearing (in the primary or the belt pulley)I will get more ping.Their has to be a reason the serg is the only bike geared at the primary diffrent.I bet it is to try to elemanate the ping you get(I think it is the efi which I am not sold on at all.Alot of money to put out after buying a 25,000 bike.I went through the r. brakes in 4000 mi.Went through a tire in 10,000 miles.I like the way it runs but dont like taching at 3400 rpms at 70 mph. This bike is nice but not what I expected.Been riding for 16 yrs.,put 120,000 mi on my evo softail not missing a beat.Put 20,000 on my pan, again no p[roblems, but I have to change the cam chain tencioners every15 to 25000 mi(so they say).any info on these issues would be greatly apreciated,headpan62
