Wonder what's different with the six gallon tanks to cause the recall?

It's the new frame, not the tanks. The tanks have been 6-gal since the '08's. The '09/10's were designed around 6-gal tanks. I've heard from a few techs that this frame had some weakness issues and will get the bike totaled out way before the previous design frames. :o :nixweiss:

BTW Scarecrow, go check out your HB pics! ;)

D'uh....  So they've been building frames for umpteen dozens of years and finally find a way to do them not in Bristol Fashion.  Trying to beef up an in-service frame....  Just wonder how big and obtrusive that add-on bracket will be?

Thanks Chip.  It's certainly a curiosity.  They've assembled gas tanks for decades.  And now suddenly they get something wrong?  Just seems odd.  Almost have to wonder if the tanks didn't change but some regulation or impact guidance did and bit them in the ass.

Don

Should be interesting.
The recall is for 9 and 10's and I think the 08's had the 6 gallon tank also so maybe it's not a 6 gallon problem.
We shall see.

Sorry.  Didn't mean to be redundant on my post.  I should have read page two for more posts before I repeated what other had said.

Checked my VIN, and it is in the recall,. Of course H-D in Europe has no clue so far. I'll send all the good info from the site (thanx for posting!) to the dealer. Gladly it is off season here at this time. But then it makes me wonder how long the Moco knew about the issue, and how they actually found out ...

So far more questions than answers.

Ride safely,
Louis

Don and everyone, here is the response I got this morning,

Quote
Hey Chip, The recall kits according to Harley will be shipped on or before the week of December 14th. They haven’t released the process as of this morning on what actually needs to be done regarding this recall, so I can’t give you the time frame on how long it will take to perform yet. I’ll let you know when we receive the kits.

Thanks,
Steve

My dealer treats me well and I'm sure this is all he knows.
I will wait for his call. (or email)
If anyone else gets the info earlier please post.

Update

Just got another email from my Service Manager on this issue.

Quote
The letter they sent out to consumers does state that we will be installing left & right hand braces and that it should be less than an hour to repair it. Until they send out the actual process forms, I’m not sure if anything else will change. I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks...

I noticed when I had the gas tank off last weekend, the mounts are puny, tiny, wee.  The frame box looks like it is made from leftover home depot metal studs. It was nice to remove with no crossover and the quick release though.

I just called the local...Kit is ordered vin specific, so call your local dealer to insure a kit is ordered for your bike.

This dealer is not the point of sale for me, just the closest.
