2007 FLHRSE3 - Transmission Noise
« on: July 06, 2009, 09:36:56 PM »

I have an '07 FLHRSE3 with approximately 20,000 miles. I just noticed an unusual sound coming from the transmission. Its a low pitch "grinding" sound. The sound is apparent when the bike is running and in neutral. If you engage the clutch, the sound remains. However, as soon as you shift into 1st or 2nd gear, the sound disappears (even with the clutch still engaged). The sound comes back while the bike is in gear and the clutch is released. I drained the transmisson fluid and checked the magnetic plug. There was what I beleive a usual amount of fine metal powder on the plug. However, as I examined the drained fluid in a plastic container, I noticed several small "shards" of metal. I attemped to collect them with a magnet but to no avail. The metal is somethhing other than steel. Latus HD in Gladstone (Portland, Or) has done all of the maintenance on the bike. I'm contacting them this week to see what is next.

Has anyone had a similar problem? I know there have been lots of issues with the 110 engine but so far, I've not seen any posts on the CVO site regarding transmission issues.  :nixweiss:

Update - Just got a call from Latus. The did a full inspection of the bike. A bearing in the inner primary has failed and a mainshaft bushing. Total bill for replacement is $370. Not bad. Extended Service Plan will cover most of it. I'm curious to find out what caused the failure.

Cheap crap from the MoCo.  This isn't something new, and in fact when the new primary and trans design debuted on the '06 Dyna they had a mandatory inspection for this bearing because H-D knew there was a potential problem.  Some of the guys who work on these things for a living will probably chime in and let you know you didn't get the only one.

NOTICE OF AMENDMENT TO OWNER’S MANUAL

2006 MODEL DYNATM MOTORCYCLES

Dear Customer:

In order to monitor the quality of our products, it has become customary in recent years for Harley-Davidson to implement an Initial Care Program on any significant new product changes.

These programs are generally managed through the Company’s authorized dealers during the motorcycle’s introduction period.

In keeping with this practice, Harley-Davidson implemented an Initial Care Program for the all new 2006 model year Dyna motorcycles at the time of introduction. This program allows Harley-Davidson to better monitor initial repair trends on this new motorcycle family and provide rapid resolution to customer concerns. The Initial Care Program for the 2006 Dyna motorcycles differs from the service interval information published in your owner’s manual:

. A lubricant change for the primary chain and transmission is now specified at 1,000 miles, and at every 5,000 miles thereafter, and

. An inner primary bearing replacement is required at 15,000-mile intervals.

Harley-Davidson has preliminarily determined the inner primary bearing on your 2006 Dyna motorcycle will require replacement at 15,000 mile intervals. The bearing will be replaced by your authorized Harley-Davidson dealer at 15,000 miles and at subsequent 15,000-mile intervals, at no cost to you. This service requirement may change over time as we make improvements and monitor repair trends on 2006 Dyna motorcycles. Your authorized Harley-Davidson dealer will be your best source of any updates to this requirement.

That is good to know. Several that I ride with are curious as to why a bearing would go out within the first 20K. And what happens when it does it again after the next 20K, especially if the ESP has expired. I'll have to share this bulletin with Latus and see what they plan to do. Thanks again.

Hey grc - Do you have an actual copy of this notice? I'd like to take this into the dealer to find out whether something similar was issued for my bike.

Three of the guys i ride with had the same problem all on 06 Dyna's, one of them went out at around 6,000 miles, one around 8,000 while we where at the Myrtle Beach rally last fall and the third one on our way back from MB and think he had between 20 and 25,000 miles on his. If i remember right the dealers told them that the bearing does not get oiled like it should and that they will go out again.
