Try this.

http://www.ehow.com/how_2182589_second-grade-math-easy.html

The student must know the numbers that add up to 10: 9+1, 8+2, 7+3, 6+4, and 5+5. Some students find it helpful (and fun) if you call these the "magic numbers." If the student does not know these facts, play some games that practice just these facts. You might want to lay out a bunch of numbers in a line and have the student move a token along each one, saying the number that goes with it to make ten. You also might want to make up rhymes, such as 9 and 1 have a lot of fun. 8 and 2 tied their shoe. 7 and 3 sat down to tea. 6 and 4 went out the door."

What we've got here is... failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men

I think it is that new math.

8+6 = 14 true.

but if you wanted to round up the 8 to a 10, you need to borrow 2 from the 6 which leaves 4.
Now you have
10 + 4 = 14 (is that what they meant?)

This is exactly what they mean  :2vrolijk_21:

Just got a call from my niece whom I usually help with her homework.  She read off a match problem neither she nor I can get our heads around:

Critical Thinking:  Explain how to make a ten to find 8 + 6

I've got no freaking idea and I'm not there to see more of the assignment.  This is read off verbatim though.  Any ideas?

Tomorrow is Monday. Has this homework assignment been completed yet? I've emailed several friends and no one has been able to answer it.
