Handlebars replacement for Ultra CVO's
« on: October 22, 2012, 11:41:09 AM »

I am thinking about replacing my handlebars for a little more comfort in my upper back and neck.
I just don't like the way I lean forward and the way my back does not meet the back rest unless I am wearing a heavy jacket.  Its like I am rolling my back rather than sitting up with my chin down.  Also I don't have the bend in my arms that I want.
That said:
I went to Mile High HD on Saturday 10-20-12
Spoke with John and Al They are service and Parts gurus.
I told them about the recommendations I received here about Wild ones Chubbys 575.  The got me on their mock up Road King and tried some bars "EGRO and some others.
This turns out to be a big job.  They are convinced that the job will require cable extensions and a full day's labor.
Parts;
WO575 approx $220.
cables approx   $270
Labor six hours. for Total  over $1,100
We got to thinking and maybe a seat alteration would be a consideration at Bitchen Stichen to get me a little lower to raise my hands...
What do you guys think I want to make sure I get this right the first time because of the expense...
Thanks

For the WO575 bars you will not need to change any cables on the Ultra. We have done many without.

I have WO575s on my current bike, and I had them on my last.  You sound like you're describing the position I have to ride in with normal bars.  That being the case, you might not find the WO575s to be as good as you're hoping - I still have to stretch forwards, especially as the WO575 is wide, and reaching out to the grips uses up scarce arm length.

My ideal bar would be like the 575, same angle for the wrists, but 2" narrower and coming 1½" further back.  If such a bar exists, I've yet to find it...

Red Eagle,

Have you tried moving your back rest forward? As you have said it is a big job to replace the bars & still might not be what you want. My HD dealer wants $1700 to change out my bars. Right now, I'm staying with what I have!

I put the WO575 on mine, I love the extra 2x2 taller and closer bars, not to mention the bigger diameter bars look better.
I did however change out the hydraulic clutch line, I could have stayed with stock, but it was tighter and I did not like the tight look as well as I was afraid of it putting too much tension on the hose.

Looks like we might get our first rain snow this weekend though its to early to tell.
I am going to move up the back rest and see what that will do for me.

The Dealer has some bars called Ergo bars I think they are 2" taller.  I will look them up on line and see what I find out.  I will get something figured out.
It is so nice to post here and bounce ideas around before spending money.
WOW $1700.  I guess my guys aren't all that bad, they even offered me a 10% discount if I do it during the winter months.

I had the same problem as you and moving the backrest to the most forward position helped.  I bought Chubby 577's for $187 from the Powesport Superstore, I bought my cables (top quality) from Johnny Vaughan http://hdbikeparts.com/ for $284, and had the bars installed for $450, from a local indy.  My dealer stated they charge $1,500 for labor!

I changed my own bars on my 09 FLHT, what a PITA.

I would like a set of 1 1/4 bars for my 06.  Im happy with the riding position, but like the phat look.

Does anyone make a set of 1 1/4 bars that are similiar to the oem bars?

I dont want to replace cables.

I just had my 2013 changed using the  bars the catalog says wont work on CVO. Also had it done on the 2012. Dealer charged $548 including the bars. Just reroute some of the lines.

Befor you use HD to. Install you bars read my story. I would hate to have this happen to someone else (note to self...do not use HD in the South Bay ever again.). After 3 plus weeks in the shop due to lack of fwd thinking on what was actually needed to put my 12in chubbies I went in to get my bike.  I was so excited about finally getting my bike back (CVO Ultra 07 with recently installed zummo GPS) I failed to do a final QA on my bike before I left the shop.  When got home I went to install the GPS and it would not fit on dash, then found hydrolic oil all over the place as the seal on the reservoir was not installed correctly, then to make matters worse the seals round the fairing was not installed properly.  Total lack of attention to detail!

Never will I take the bike back to this shop... Paid 2k to have progressive suspension installed and to have bars installed. 900 for labor in which there appeared to beno QA...  They have the bike back now but will have to inspect like crazy as I do not know what I will get back after a week. I expect more from HD...

Putting 575 bars on is not a difficult task, it's just time consuming. There are a lot of good threads on here that will explain all the steps in very good detail. I've put on three and the last one took about three hours. Depending on the year and make of your bike, there might not be a need to get longer cables. My 2008 FLHX required it and my 2012 did not.

RedEagle,
Did you finally decide on which bars to go with?
I think that the ERGO bars you spoke of are a Klock Werks product, and very expensive( looking on their site)

I paid 4hours for labor   All cables and stock wiring worked fine. 360 for labor and 220 for the WO 575 bars. Done. I think a dealer who does this often should be able to do it that much time allowed.   All day seems like much.  :nixweiss:

Thanks for the all input guys.
My update;
I took RedEagle in for maintenance over the Thanksgiving holiday and I did not have any handle bars installed.  If I am going to spend this much I am going to wait until I know for sure just what I want.  My plan is to check out more bikes that have installed new bars and ask if I can sit on their bike.  I am pretty sure of where I need to be, but I want some more time to be sure I will be happy with the end result and now is not the time in Colorado to see a lot of bikes out and about.  I am also going to check with more of the local indy's they might agree to 4 hrs labor regardless of actual time.
Thanks for the input as usual this is what makes this forum Great!!
Thanks to Kingspoke for the pic.  Great looking ride...*S
Keep the input coming I am still studying all options.

Of all the bars for bat wing fairing baggers (with 14" centers) only the 575s get the bars back closer.  They have a 13" pullback which is 2" more than the other bagger bar options from WO.  Compared to the 575s the 578s have the same rise and are 2" wider (36.5" vs 34.5") but have an 11" pullback as do the 576s and 577s.  Now if you want something taller, more 'apeish' then the 576s or the 577s would do it.  But only the 575s have the extra 2" pullback which is what I like.   :2vrolijk_21:

Stock bars have 12 and a half pullback. The chart on this thread only has bars with one half inch more pullback than stock. Where is the other 2 inches. Only one bar on the whole chart has1 and 3 quarters more pullback and it is the rg pullbacks. WHAT AM I MISSING GUYS? WHERE IS THE 2 MORE INCHES? Is some of the pullback coming from the rise. I am reaching for my bars and it is very uncomfortable. HEEELLLPPPP!!!

That's my problem too, Wayne.  575s are what I have had on my last couple of bikes, but they still don't have enough pullback. As I said earlier in the thread, I'd like chubbies with 2" more pullback than the 575, 2" narrower than the 575, and the same wrist angle.

Wayne, I'm just a messenger and maybe the message is incorrect, don't know.   :confused5:  All I can tell you is what Wild1 says about the 575s on their website:    "GETS THE GRIPS 2" CLOSER TO THE RIDER ON FLHX, FLHT/C/U/K"

I can tell you that the 575s do get the grips closer than the stock bars - at least on my '07 cuse2 and my '12 cuse7.

Did a little research and looked in the H-D P&A catalog at their bars.  Stock bars for '07 EG (non-CVO) are 55924-97 and are still listed in the P&A catalog showing 6.25 pullback.  Stock bars for '07 CVO cuse2 (56007-04) are not listed in the P&A catalog but those for the '12 CVO cuse7 are - p/n 56036-08 with a 6.50 pullback. Even the bat wing reduced reach handlebar (56176-08) which moco says 'brings controls 2" closer to the rider for increased comfort' only shows 7.50 pullback.

So does the moco measure pullback differently?  From the chart on the catalog it looks the same as Wild1.  Perhaps a misprint?  Jeez, I have a headache now.

The 578s dirtyjim installed have an upward curve in them that the 575s don't, so that would probably put them farther away from the rider than the 575s, though, of course, you should be able to rotate them downward which would bring them closer, too.  I am 5' 11" and I know from the 60 seconds I've sat on my bike after the 575s were installed that they are quite a bit closer.  That's the part that has me a tad concerned.  Don't want them to be too close, but hell, maybe after some miles it will feel just right.

They, do, but a lot of the advantage for us guys with short reach is lost because they are so wide.

Hey 110thunder, Did you have to replace wiring or hydralic lines for those bars. If so could you please let me know what it took to get correct lengths. Just ordered a pair. Thanks for your input earlier it helped me make up my mind. 575's on their way.

Understand Jim.  Wish I had an answer.  From what I've uncovered trying to sort through this is nigh impossible since you cannot really tell from the specs exactly what the bars might be once installed.  I find that sitting up close really helps with control.  I move my riders backrest to the closest position.  Heck I even shimmed the one on my RUSE when I had it to tilt it more forward and push me up.  If you have not done so you might try that.

Wayne, I cannot speak for Brian but I can tell you that my stock lines - brake, clutch and electrical worked just fine.  Brian has the very same bike as I.

Now my '07 was an entirely different matter.  All the cables and lines had to be lengthened so I was somewhat apprehensive when it came time to add the bars to my '12.  But no problem at all.

Go for it.  I think you will like it.   :2vrolijk_21:

From the posts I've read here, you may be at the mercy of the clutch and brake line manufacturer on how tight a tolerances they keep on lengths.  The majority have not had to replace lines for the 575s and I did not, either, but a few folks have had to.  The tech said it would have started getting iffy he needed another inch or so, but no problems, as-is.  Wiring is fine, too.

My dealer did the install.  Not something I'd feel comfortable doing and it only ended up costing me about $200 in labor with some warranty work that was being done on the cruise switch, anyway, and some service specials they were running at the time.

Had the dealer do mine along with the H-D Premium Ride Cartridge system.  But last month I helped a buddy install Wild One 10" Apes on his 2011 CVO Road Glide Ultra.  Since this was the first time either of us had tackled such a job it took quite a while - about 7 or 8 hours total due to the learning curve and taking it slow and sure.  If I did one again I'm sure it would not take nearly as long.  Not too bad a job and we had no problems.

But doing it alone but have been a major league pia.  You definitely need a helper, and, oh yeah, definitely need the service manual.

after wo578 rolled down closer to rider,I wanted my hands to stay below the fairing but wanted some height. Bars are 1 '' wider on each side not much differance but hey whats 2'' unless....... anyway love the 578s higher wider closer . Pull Back is a relative thing most often a line extended from the fork angle back to the tips of the grips. my bars are rolled back to be closer to me as far as they will without touching console when turned lock to lock, or you can roll forward to the fairing for that fists in the wind look . if you want a usable measurement, tape from inner/outer fairing line to center end cap . Mine is 13.25 ''

Bars are almost to close and Im 5' 9', I may have to roll forward a frazz . I selected the wo578s for the range of adjustment they offer. Look on wild 1 s website at brad lawsons 2012 cuse to see the high look

Has anyone done this mod with the 575's on a '13 yet?  I am in the same situation as some of you. Neck and back pain after long rides. I am looking for bars that are closer to me and a bit higher. Also looking to see if cables need to be extended.

Slopoke,

If you go with Chubby 575's or 578's you will not need to add any cables or wire extensions. I put 578's on my 2012 and love them. Look at Wild1 website for different sizes. Lot of guys here went with 575's they are closer to stock bars with better pullback but not much height diff. My neck was killing me on long rides as well but i didnt need the bars closer to me ( Pullback ) I wanted higher so 578's being 2-1/2" taller than stock was the ticket for me. Very easy install. Just make sure if dealer does them you are there to sit on bike in your riding position with the GPS on the cradle before he tightens them down. Oh yea, the 578's are mini apes and look bad ass on the bike. 575's look just like stock but thicker. Good Luck with whatever you choose and PM me if your going to do yourself I have a few time saving tips as Iv'e done a few of these on Baggers in the past.

Thanks for the info..  I ordered the 575's and the dealer will install them because I am leaving the country for a month and they will have my scooter for that time to fix a paint issue and do some engine mods for me(wood bros cam 777 and Vance and Hines power duals, and a SE supper tuner with some time on the dyno..)  I hope I don't need any cables so it wont get too pricey..I know the moco moved the clutch line on the 13 to enter the side of faring instead of the front side above air temp gauge (which i think should be an oil temp instead). I dont know if that will make a difference or not. We will see in a month...

Again thanks for your advice. This is why I love this site...

Just wanted to add an option see a lot on the WO575's and such and an alternative that I decided to go with on my 12 FLHXSE3 was the Khrome Werks +2 Sweepers. Did the install myself. Took my time (it's winter) and found the install to be rather easy. Just document the wiring by drawing diagrams and noting which wire goes to which pin location on the molex connectors. Plenty of information on the internet on how to disassemble molex connectors and I found it to be relatively easy to do once I researched it. I have my new bars currently mocked up and connectors plugged back in and turned everything back on to make sure all my switches/etc. worked. All is well  :bananarock: The wires were all long enough without extensions. The only thing that is tight is the hydraulic clutch line I may or may not have to reroute that not sure I still have the entire fairing tilted forward and I plan on buttoning it all up this afternoon so I will report back. I also replaced the bushings while the bars were off. Just wanted to share hope it helps someone.

BTW I have $78 in the bars (they are drilled for internal wiring and TBW) $12 in polyurethane bushings, and about $15 in miscellaneous items like lube for pulling the wires through the bars and electrical tape. Grand total of about $110 and my time in my upgrade  :P

Can you post a picture when you're done with the install? I had 575's on my '06 Ultra (which helped over stock), but I would like to have had another inch or so of pullback.

just a little update on the new bars.  As per the dealer the brake line had to be replaced with a longer one, so they are waiting for it to arrive.  So, if you  own a '13 ultra, you may need to replace the brake line when installing wo 575's. I am not 100% on this since I am not here to question them but I trust the mech doing the work.  Just a little FYI.  I will post some pics as soon as can get them to take some and send to me.

Hello All;
Update
I am going to have Chuby's 578s installed.  I am glad I took some time on this I think I will happier with the 578's.

Then I am thinking I should upgrade my GPS to a Garmin zumo 660, It always gets deeper right. *S
I need a new helmet too so I am thinking about the benefits of Bluetooth.  I am thinking using the bluetooth headset for GPS, phone (I can't see I will ues the phone that much but who knows)  I have Hog Tunes Ultra package no problem listening with helmet on.
OK back to the handlebars.
I am looking at HD chrome handlebar mount for a Zumo 660.
http://www.harley-davidson.com/media/images/productphotos/PNA/76000191_M_27e59.jpg

Any info about this mount and Bluetooth add on would be helpful.
I am thinking I should do this when I do the handlebars.
Is it hard to wire?
Is there a problem mounting with the clutch reservoir?
Thanks

578 are the way to go if you want taller bars with a little pull back. They are true mini Apes without the crazy over the top look of the Custom Baggers you see out there. I even think the 577 look great to but a little too tall for my 6' frame. Wildone Chubby's gets my vote on Quality, Function, Price and Looks. There Chrome is the best I have seen anywhere
575 are all Pull BAck with same height as Stock bars. Dont get me wrong, still great 1-1/4" thick bar with same beautiful chrome finish but too much like stock for me.

I have a question, if you roll the 578's down will that give you more pull-back than 575's. Just looking for that 2" closer to the rider that every short rider seems to be talking about. You know its for a friend not me. Lol. Still looking for that perfect set of bars...... Jon.  :soapbox:

Jon,

I wouldn't think rolling them back will help with pull back. It sounds like it would but if you look closely at these bars they are also wider ( Grip to Grip ) than the 575's and OEM bars. If you rolled them down you would just create tall bars to shorter if that makes sence. The 578's are designed solely for height with minimal pull back like stock. The 575's are designed for all Pull Back with same height as stock. Bars are tricky but if you want bars closer to you due to short arms I would suggest 575's. If you need height as well I would suggest 578's with a seat that sits you closer to the bars. There is more than one way to skin the cat. Hope this helps

I have a question, if you roll the 578's down will that give you more pull-back than 575's. Just looking for that 2" closer to the rider that every short rider seems to be talking about. You know its for a friend not me. Lol. Still looking for that perfect set of bars...... Jon.  :soapbox:

Yes they will more pullback.  I called the factory and spoke with them about the 575 and the 578s.  The key difference between the two is the dogleg bend above the riser.  This adds in getting pullback when rotated toward the rider without just having the bars roll downward.  He said that the 578s have lots more adjustment room by rolling them.  He said the 575s dont have any either they fit you or they dont and not much can be done.  I gave him my situation and he recomeded the 578s just for the ability to adjust them.
I hope that helps good luck with your choice.  My RedEagle is getting them installed as we speak...*S  I took a before pic of me showing how extended my arms are I will take a after photo as soon as she is ready.

Hey folks

Just picked up my 2013 CVO Electra Glide Tribal Orange Friday 3-1-13.  AMAZING   :2vrolijk_21:  So I did 3 mods before picking up bike.
I changed the handlebars. I went with Wild One Chubby bars model WO578 in chrome, description says 2 inches higher than stock. The existing
cables and lines all fit and none of them look like there being stretched. If you are going to use the GPS (and I done see why you wouldn't)
you will have to pull the bars toward you 3/4 of an inch. The bars do not obstruct the view on the GPS .Very Happy with bars so far.
Next mod : I took stock exhaust off and replaced with Vance and Hines Power Dual Head pipe and 4inch blackout rounds.  Yes I broke up all that chrome
with black exhaust. Looks Fantastic, also installed Harley Race Tuner.

I WILL POST PICS TODAY  !!!!!!!!

Well, thanks for the input I have 575 on my cvo. Little bit of a conflict in answers. Are 578s wider than 575s ? That sounds like it would take away the benifet of trying to row them back ? This is for Susans bike, but if I found something better for her I would consider using also. She doesn't like the width of my 575s but still needs to be closer to her. Has anyone heard of bars called Santee that offer the kind of pull-back alot of us are looking for ? Thought I saw a bike in American bagger that looked to have bars that were pulled back alot in pictures and they were listed as Santee bars. Anyone have any experience with these ? Thanks for all the input . Jon

Hmmmm.......  if 578s are wider than 575s, they must be very wide indeed!  My problem with short arms and 575s is that you lose the advantage of the extra pullback because they are so wide and you have to really stretch outwards. My ideal bar would be one that is 2" narrower and 2" more pullback than the 575, to let me sit up properly.

This is from Wild Chubby website.

WO575 10"rise  34.5" wide  14" center  13" pulback  42degree wrist angle

WO578 36.5" wide 14" center  11" to 14" pulback 40degree wrist angle

WO578 are 2.5" taller than stock

I hope this helps!

Ok  So I finally posted some decent pics. Just to recap  Just purchaser 2013 CVO Electra Glide, First thing I changed was the bars. Went with Wild Ones WO578. Did not have to change any cables. Had to pull bars 3/4 inch towards driver to clear GPS unit. Hope this helps.

That looks like it might be a solution, I wonder if you could cut the ends of handlebars so they weren't 2" wider ? Looks like they are long enough to to do that, just not sure if that would be any help on getting them closer to rider ? Might loose pull-back by going narrower. ? :-(. Can't believe they don't make a bar like so many of us want......? Maybe I sould call Chubbies and see if they have one in R.D. for the future. Jon

Dont go cutting the handles then your grips and throttle by wire will not fit on the bars. Not sure how tall you are or the lenght of your arms. I am 6' on the nose and only 31" of that is inseam. I am all torso, with that beind said, I needed Taller bars as my sleeve is a 36-1/2" according to my tailor who makes my dress shirts. I have had the YAffe bars 12" and absoloutly loved them. Rode for days with no neck pain, I didn't think the Yaffe bars would look good on my CVO Ultra so I went with the Wild One 578's and I love these just as much. We are all different in size and stature in every way. Danner55 is a couple inches shorter than me if I recall and he loves his 578's. Do not let the width scare you, who holds the bars art the ends anyway.

Here are 14" yaffe's on my 13 CVO Ultra, but you will have to relocate the GPS.  I also ran my hydraulic clutch line and brake line through the bars.

As you say we are all diferent sizes, I"m 5-5 with 30" inseam so if I want to lean into my backrest on my corbin seat (close-reach) I grab the ends of my handle bars. Not a good solution for 95% of the time. Being able to roll some 14" bars might be a solution though, just not sure it would work correctly with wrist angle and all. Guess I need to go to dealer and try that idea on one of their seat/ handlebar mock up bikes. Really is great to get all the feedback from everyone though, just one of the things I love about this great CVO site. Jon  :2vrolijk_21:

I didn't need to move my GPS mount.  I like the bars slightly tilted back so I can lean against my Corbin backrest and still reach the bars.  I put the Crutchfield Swivel on the Zumo to change the angle.  Here is a pic.

Ya, I should have been more clear. You need to relocate if bars are pushed forward like mine. If pulled back far enough it would work, but I am 6'5" and I need my bars as far forward as possible that is why I relocated.  For the shorter folks I think the 12" yaffe bars will be comfy for ya.

I don't know how you got the brake line through the bars!  Mine was tight with the wires!  Were the bars pre drilled for the brake and clutch?

You can't cut them as the chubby part would stop the grips from going on (they are standard diameter at the ends so the grips fit!)

Calling them is a good idea!  Ask about bars with the same grip angle as 575s but 2" narrower and more pullback!  :2vrolijk_21:

Hey Folks. Jonga. Do not cut bars they will not shorten the width, you will only ruin bar.  I went with the 578's. pulled them forward 3/4 inch that's it to clear GPS. But I along with all the other guys that have long arms miss that 3/4 inch. I decided to go with 578 after reading good reviews. Just got bike, leaving for Daytona this Sunday. I'll let you know how they feel riding the Loop over and over again.

Cowboy

I ordered the bars from Yaffe Raw and had to drill the holes myself then take to a chromer.  Those aren't your standard braided cables.  It is the Russell Pro System II tubing, it is really thin and will go through bars after all wires are ran.  You just really need to be careful how you run it not to damage the tubing. Also run the clutch cable away from heat if you want to run all the way to side tranny cover.  My last bike it was ran all the way to tranny cover no issues, but this bike for a piece of mind I decided to run the russell tubing through the bars to a point where the tubing comes out of the fairing then used an adapter to switch back to a black pearl braided cable.  This way the braided cable is protected from all heat and road junk as it is ran by the exhaust, o2 sensors and cam cover.

UPDATE: Handlebars replacement for Ultra CVO's
« Reply #95 on: April 05, 2013, 11:50:14 AM »

It took longer than I thought it would , but I have the WO's Chubby 578's with a new Road Tech Zumo 660 mounted to them.
I road around for about 1/2 hr.  I hope to get more riding in this weekend.  They feel Great! I might have to adjust the highway pegs we'll see.  One thing I did notice is slow turning riding in parking lots, I am not used to having the bars so high and close but I will get used to that no worries.
Cost
Chubby 587 $220
Labor to mount with the Zumo 660 $400
Tax $20
Road Tech 660 $650 (approx I dont have the paper work here)
Harley's Handle bar Chrome mount $120 approx
Total  $1410
I am posting before and after pics.  Both pics I have my feet on the ground.  Notice the curve in my back and this was more pronounced with my feet on the floorboards riding.

I didn't need to move my GPS mount.  I like the bars slightly tilted back so I can lean against my Corbin backrest and still reach the bars.  I put the Crutchfield Swivel on the Zumo to change the angle.  Here is a pic.

Cowboy,
I was looking for the Crutchfield swivel you mentioned in your post.  Couldn't find it on the crutchfield web site.  Could you please provide some info on how I can find one.
Thanks

SOTLucky,

Just installed 13" Burley Bagger Bars on my 2010 Ultra.  They won't clear the gas tank console without moving the GPS.  Really like the mount you have used.  Where did you get it?  Looked over the internet and can't find a source.

It's a MoCo part.

Ah, sorry RK1679, didn't notice on the photo that that's not a MoCo one, but there is a MoCo one that does the same job - the one that comes as stock on CVO Ultras.  Neater too, as the cable doesn't have to do what that one does.  Dunno if it will clear your bars though.... see this thread, part numbers are there too:  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=49593.0;all

Ah!  Then I'm wasting your time, sorry!  I was thinking (from your sig) that you had a Road King.
