Title: 2013 CVO Road Glide-Intermittent Radio Problems
Post by: pjcollura on May 29, 2013, 05:39:08 PM
I have a 2013 CVO that I purchased in March.  I have been having intermittent radio problems where the speakers will all work fine one minute, then they randomly rotate on and off.  The bike as been at the dealer 4 times now and they have replaced my amp and the iPod module.  Picked it up this morning, only to turn around and bring it back.  Is anyone else having this problem?  Is it common that the dealerships don't diagnose but only change parts?  Seems like they are guessing at what might be wrong...

Took my 2013 CVO Roadglide to the dealer today for the right faring speaker cutting in and out. They ordered a new speaker and tweeter. The radio would operate fine while standing still, once I reached cruising speed with the vol past half way the right speaker would start acting up, don't have much confidence a simple speaker swap will cure the problem.  I have heard of a few others having the same issues with their audio system, seems a close look at this by HD is in order.

I am having similar issue.  Mine is just the comple sound shuts off for a second or so.  No loss of power to radio.  Doesn't matter if the GPS is hooked up.  Where the speaker settings are at.  I can't make it do it sitting still I must be moving.  Volume must be up about half way. Does it on aux, cd, or radio.  They did get it to act up for them at the dealer on the road test.  So they ordered me a new head unit.  I tried to wiggle wires to the amp under the tour pack.  Wiggled wires under the seat.  I can't make it do it.  I hope the guessed right also.  I will see this week when it comes in.

Todd.
Should have said I have a 11.5 ultra

Ground wire problem????? Amp problem????
Both come to mind . I think the amps are still notoriously suspect.

Turn the AVC off and see if that solves the problem. If it does then suspect the amp is clipping. You can check the amp while siting still by turning the volume up a little at a time. If you can turn the volume up all the way and the problem does not rear its ugly head then the amp is probable OK. If it starts to clip then the amp or head unit is bad. Just a maybe here but you have to start troubleshooting some where.

Could be one of many things, a loose connection, crimped wire, head unit, amp, etc..

My left rear saddle bag speaker cuts out on some songs when playing the IPod. I took it in to the dealer and they ordered a new speaker for it, I'll keep you all posted if it cured the problem

This is why we are forced to get aftermarket sound systems.

I had this problem and just ripped everything out.  Still using HK head unit with no issues.

Factory amps and speakers suck!

Has this issued been fixed by Harley Davidson yet.  I'm having the same issue on my 2013 CVO Road Glide for about 10 months now...Its fustrating.  My bike has been in the shop more times than in my garage.

I had the same issue, took it in 3 times, was finally told by the HD rep the exact same thing they told Gator Mike "Harley told my dealer to cut AVC off , bass half way treble no More than half and volume no more than 3/4 Motor Co said that's the way it is.

I finally bought a Hawg Wired RS-400 Amp and 6.5" ZX speakers direct from Hawg Wired and my dealer (Paris, TX Harley) installed them for free. The owner agreed that it's really sad that Harley will not stand behind their stuff.

I have bought my last new Harley.

but in the meantime...this thing frigging really rocks now. I love my music loud and the clarity is increadible at volumes louder that I can stand it at 80 MPH.

It cost me $600.00, but at least I don't get pissed off everytime I ride my bike now.

I have the same problem. Have changed all speakers, both amps, and the deck. Nothing has helped. The HD rep told the service tech working on my bike to tell me to run with the AVC off, bass no more than half, treble not more than half, and never turn up volume all the way. I say BS. Have started a file with Harley Customer service and we'll see how that goes. Talked to a Harley rep at Sturgis and he said he would contact my service tech at the dealership to get all info. Surprise Surprise no phone call ever made to the dealer ship.  Don't know what to do next. Am looking at aftermarket speakers and amp. Thanks Sloride, am going to check out Hawg Wired. The guys at Texan Harley, In Conroe, TX. have been great. They have tried everything.

I am also having the same problems. I just bought my 2013 CVO Road Glide. I would think after paying 35k on a bike they would treat us better. If they know this problem persists and replacing with after market fixes it why not just do it and save them all the time on labor hours. There are lemon laws and if mine is not fixed soon I will be talking to an attorney about it. I actually think it may qualify for a class action.

Add me and my 13' SERK to the list. I have taken the bike in several times only to have the same problem again. I have invested in new speakers, amp, and wiring but have been too mad about the issue at hand to install them. It would seem that HD would stand behind their product 100% that does not appear likely at this point based on the number of documented and undocumented reports Ive seen and heard.

I have a 2013 cvo road glide (orange and grey). It has been in the shop a little over a month all together because of the speakers going on and off whenever the volume is up past halfway. It is so bad you can't even listen to it. It is especially bad on cd and iPod with any song that might have bass in it. Head unit, amps and some bad wiring have been replaced with no help. No one knows what to do. Harley technical service is no help.  The service rep says he won't let this bike be the first he could not fix. It's been a month. How much time does he need??? The dealership has told me a few times that it is fixed but I take it right back.  I bought this bike in part because of the stereo.  I told them they will more than likely have to pull every wire and find a short. I guess that is their next step.  I'll see what happens next time they tell me to come get it. It was a long ride from sturgis to Dallas with no music.  Maybe should have bought a Honda. That was a joke.  Nothing rides like this cvo thou with or without music.

Add me to the list!!!!!  Mine just started doing the same thing. Left rear saddle bag speaker starts popping. And I agree we shouldnt be having these issues on a 35k bike. Or at least the MOCO should stand behind there bikes instead of trying to figure out ways to screw us over for being loyal customers.  This is my 5th new HD since 2004 and 2nd CVO, so I've spent a little money with them.

Just may have to switch brands if they are going to treat me like this. We buy 35k motrocycles and then have to spend $$$$$$ more to make them run right and cool down properly, and then change seats and bars to make them comfortable, and then replace the audio systems.  I could go out and buy a Goldwing and not have to do a damn thing to it but ride the piss out of it.

Im headed to my dealer this morning to complain about my speaker, I'm sure to only hear them say that they haven't heard about this problem and they will need me to leave it so they can have it for a week or so and then claim they couldn't reproduce the problem.  That song and dance is getting very old!!!!!!!!!

Motorcycles also have lemon laws. I guess that is my next step. What else can you do when the dealership where  you bought the bike says they can't fix it.  What a huge pain in the ass.  Nothing worse than giving an attorney money for something like this.

Update!!

Went to my dealer yesterday, and just as I figured they claim they hadn't heard anything about this issue. And until it actually fails there isn't much they can do. Seriously considering selling this and buying a Goldwing.  So tired of HD's bull$hit!!!!!

Harley dealer called me back and said if I turned the treble and bass off or almost off it solves the problem. Case was then closed. No explanation why when it was new it didn't do it verses why when 6 months went by it started.  Stock speakers are low quality is what dealer told me. When they sell you this $36000 motorcycle they fail to mention it.

If you live in a state where motorcycles are covered by the lemon law, some states don't, then you do not have to pay for a lawyer its free to you. The state takes care of it for you. Every state has there own law so you will have to look yours up. Advise to the knowing, follow your lemon law to the letter. Miss one step and your back to square one.

Even if your state does not cover bikes you may have to sue under the federal warranty act. You will need to contact a lawyer but it still may be free, check it out.

When you guys say your speakers cuts out, do you mean that there is no sound?  I am having an issue with a short blast of static like an AM radio between stations. It only last for a couple of seconds and it is back to normal.  It happens when I am using the iPod setting on the HK sound system.  I almost always listen to the iPod.  I have a 2012 SESG.  Any thoughts?

Yes it is an issue!!!  My 2012 CVO RG has been to 3 different dealerships for a total of 7 times.  They replaced the radio twice the amp and the speakers and still nothing fixes it.  I road it for 8 months with no problem then all of a sudden the right speaker keeps cutting out at cruising speed with volume over half way up.  I was able to turn a song that was recorded at a lower volume up all the way and it never cut out.  So it seems to be a level of sound that cuts it out while riding.  Harley still is waiting for me to bring it back again for the 8th time to see if they can fix it!!!!

...Yep, it's a known issue.  Amps overheat & cheap MTX speakers can't handle the load & cut out. I've had a few replaced under warranty.

You can add me to the list also as my 2013 SERG saddlebag speakers are cutting in and out and crackling really bad. More so when I'm riding it, especially around 1800 - 2400 RPM. Mine is going back to the dealer for the second time next week. I will seek legal action also if they don't get this fixed soon. Bike is not quite a year old yet! Come on Harley stand behind your product, especially the amount of money these bikes cost us!

Not willing to hagle with harley over this, installed an alpine KTP-445u amp and 7.25 JM Speakers up front, sounds great and a releatively inexpensive fix, 350.00 total in.

I've had this issue for over a year now.  Bike has been in and out of the shop way too many times for this.  It has had speakers replaced and many of hours of troubleshooting to still have the issue.  Upon my own, I've found the speakers are 1 ohm.  And as everyone has already stated, the amp and speakers are junk.  So I'm planning to replace all amps and speakers starting with the front fairing first since this is the typical spot that's causing the most issue.  Taking it in to the dealer is only going to prevent me from riding and essentially waste my time with it being in the shop.

Hello everyone. I've been reading all of your posts, I'm really not too happy on what I've been reading! I have a 2013 road glide cvo. I bought it brand new approx 2 years ago. 7 months into owning my bike, my speakers on my sound system started clipping, one speaker on, one speaker on, left to right and so forth. I dropped it off to the dealership and told them the problems. Well they kept my bike for 2 wks for them to call me and tell me to come pick up my bike and that it was fixed. Excited as I was to get my bike back, I rushed out and picked up my bike. I entered the freeway and turned up my stereo and what do you know, the same issue. I didn't even turn around, I wanted to ride my bike. I rode it for another 4 months and got tired of the bluetooth helmet I purchased to have music while I ride on my road trips. I have now brought my bike to another dealership because I didn't have faith in the last one to find myself back and forth to this other dealership 3 more times and still my speakers are still cutting out. They installed 4 new speakers, 2 new amplifiers, new head unit and a new iPod interface unit. I come home to notice that my outer fairing wasn't installed properly. So what do I do, remove the turn signals and the 6 screws and realign the fairing and go to screw it back together and my tabs that the screws goes into is stripped out! I'm very upset and frustrated with bike now! now I have to go back to the dealership and make them order me another outer fairing and my stereo still doesn't work! Is there anyone on here that has had any success with the dealership fixing their issue without having to use an aftermarket system, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! IM VERY FRUSTRATED NOW AND I HAVE A 2400 MILE RIDE IN 2 DAYS WITH NO MUSIC. SMDH!!!! HELP!!!!

Yes, Alpine KTP-445U with J&M speakers up front. Problem solved until I was broadsided on my way to work one morning.
