Lifter Noise
« on: January 02, 2012, 09:07:06 AM »

Happy New Year everyone!

Finally got around to taking my bike to the local dealer and have them listen to the motor. Lead tech confirmed it was lifter noise and did not recommend lifter replacement. He stated the CVO motors seem to be a bit more noisier than non-CVO powerplants. He stated the 110 CVO's are fairly noisy out the box.

You can hear what my bike sounds like by going to this link:   The noise may not be detrimental (thats debateable) but its sure annoying…and more importantly it was not this pronounced before it was in the Wilmington shop over Thanksgiving.  I’m leaning towards changing them out before I move to Germany this August. I'm curious to hear what everyone on the forum has to say. Is your bike making this much racket? Are you living with it or did you do something about it? Motor has 25,500 miles on it.

The 06 cvo has the "almost bullet proof" 103.  I have 72k miles on my 04 and I can barely hear a thing that sounds like lifter noise. I would go find another guy to take it to. If you have the ESP, I would go looking for another dealer.  Good luck and I hope you can solve that headache.  :(

I'm no expert and the sound in the video sounds alot like mine did. It sounded like a chirping noise... ended up being a lifter skating on the cam. Just thought I'd share

@Phaq2: Not a chirp...definitely a tapping noise.

@cvostu: No ESP. Found out it would have been voided if I did since the bike has a hitch on it. This is something new that I learned, you warranty is voided if you take it in with a hitch or any other indication you've been towing with it.

Sounds just like mine ,hard plating came off roller cam on lifter, smeared roller on botton of lifter and marked up cam shaft. Dealer said he had seen this before hard coating on roller to soft and flaked off and got on cams and took them out replaced and now sounds good, need to get valves checked out before taking the whole engine out with metal coming of these parts , Good luck

My recommendation would be to take it to a reputable dealer and possibly consider changing the cam, push rods and pull the top to verify lifter/valve damage. If you go that far then I would also consider a spring upgrade. Definately a noise I would want to get rid of right away.

A small price to pay to prevent a catastrophic failure.

Best of luck!

I'd have someone take a peek in the cam chest.
Could very well be a lifter roller is headed south.

I changed my 2009 110 lifters as the noise was driving me crazy. Same crap from HD "it's normal".

A friend with a 2008 that was upgraded at the dealer to 103 had a what I suspect was a lifter go at 30K miles.  HD said it was a soft cam?  They made him pay for all the repairs.  He broke down three times ($$$s) in each of his three big trips.  One was a short in the fly by wire (two different dealers to find and fix) , one was transmission seal, and the last was the cam/lifter event.  He's a bit pi$$ed.

25K seems to be about the average when these lifters go south.

Z10, I listened to your video and the valve train noise is much louder than the "they all sound like that" response I got from my local HD dealer regarding my lifter noise. I am going to have it looked into as soon as I can get myself to Bennet's Performance in Long Beach,Ca. It is 63 miles on the 405 freeway, but it will be worth to get his opinion.CAHDBIKER
