Title: JCZ toy hauler....
Post by: JCZ on March 29, 2017, 04:45:46 PM

A few of you have asked when I was going to post pictures of the new toy hauler.....here it is.   A 2017 Momentum 376TH, 41'4" long with 5 slide outs and a garage.  It has 6 pt. leveling system, outside kitchen and outside entertainement, washer/dryer, etc.

Thanks a bunch for all the compliments guys.

The truth is, we've been working towards this goal for years.  When I retire later this year we will be living and traveling in the Momentum full time.  We're going to join the growing class of "full timers".  Yep, they even have several forums for full timers.  We're going to live the life, live the dream.....of the life that I used to dream about while on my long rides.

Plan to make it to more GTGs, also!  :2vrolijk_21:

Beautiful... I'm going to look at that model. Can you tell me how the garage and bedroom is set up?  Looks like full bedroom.  Love the living room that was one thing I did not like about other toy haulers.

Luc, look at all the Grand Design models.  They are top of the line for toy haulers.

The Momentum 376TH the bedroom is above the garage.  If you look at the picture of the window over the garage door (outside picture from the rear) it's the same window in the bedroom above the headboard.  This design keeps from loosing living space to the garage like most toy haulers.  The garage is actually below the bed, that's why the bed sets so high.  The drivers side of the bedroom is a slide out closet (all the mirrored doors) and the passenger side is all windows.

A large televator TV in the living room (it goes up and down in the cabinet behind the fire place), TV in the bedroom on an articulated wall mount and a TV outside in the entertainment center.

The forward living room with opposite slide outs is a huge plus for this model.....much like a small home rather than an RV.  This model, Momentum 376TH has only been out two years but is already one of their leading models.  Many full timers have this model due to the comfort level.

This 5er was bought used.....he had it for six months.  He ordered it with all the options like the washer/dryer, the 3rd A/C unit in the bedroom, 160W solar panel, whole house vacuum system, 7 yr. extended warranty, a new residential mattress, a new Kurig coffee maker with three cases of different flavors of coffee, etc.

I met the guy at my credit union in Pamona, Ca and the dash showed 14.7 mpg.  I towed it back to San Diego at 65-70 mph....some hills and it showed 14.5.  So it looks to be getting as good a mileage as my F-250 FX-4 pulling my small 5th wheel.  I'm actually kind of surprised at that considering this is a dually.  Much better mileage than my old F-350 daully with the 6.0 and a lot more HP and TQ in these newer trucks.

Sold the sticks and bricks and a couple of rentals a few years back.  A couple more rentals went back to the bank when the housing market dumped.  We've been down sizing and getting rid of "stuff" every since.  It's hard to get rid of stuff but when you do, it's very freeing feeling.  No anchors around our necks.....we'll be able to go and stop when ever we feel like it.  I keep telling Babe I'm throwing my watch away.  LOL

Almost bought that model last month but every time the bed went up and down a lot of sawdust kept falling down to the floor and made me nervous... It looks like yours has the same problem in the pictures. I was a little nervous that it would fall down on my baby some day! Has it gone away yet on yours and did the dealer find anything or is there a problem? Please update in a few months and let us know how it's holding up.... ;)

Best of luck!

Nice JC. Still waiting for dealers on the east coast to actually have this model in stock to look at.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts with it.

I'm steering towards a conventional 5th wheel for our next rig, but my buddy has been wanting this model since we first heard about it. And once I finally see, might change mind as well. Full timing for 2-3 years is on our radar as well.

Ya gotta reset the lie-o-meter.

I never see better then 9.5 pulling 17-18K of toy hauler with my F-350 DRW. On average it is about 8.5-9 towing.

The ability to move the bed up and down has only been out for a couple of months.  My bed does not move up and down.

The only sawdust in mine is from when I drilled the holes in the floor to install the B&W Biker Bar......   https://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=79634.msg1422880#msg1422880

Is that by the computer on your dash?  What year of truck?  That sounds like about what I got with my 6.0.  My 12 F-250 and my 14 F-350 both get way better than that.  I'll check it by actual mileage vs. gallons used when I take a long trip.

My truck is a 2011 6.7.

My mileage has been consistent using either a calculator or the trip meters.
I used to get on average 10-12 towing but a transmission computer flash (that I specifically requested not be done) dropped my mileage almost 2 mpg on average, towing or not.

I've got 87,000 on the truck now of which 39,000 is pulling the toy hauler.
Just waiting for a chance to drive a 2017 450 to decide whether the next truck will be another 350 DRW or the 450.

I have 6 months and 11,000 miles before my bumper to bumper warranty runs out and I plan on having a truck before that expiration.

Good for you, JC.  A boss of mine retired August 31, 2015 and that's what they have done.  They actually sold everything about a year prior, bought their fifth wheel and truck and lived "the life" before he retired just to make sure they would enjoy it....they did!  Here's a link to their blog if you are interested.  It's got quite a few "glad we done" and "won't do that again" all through it.  They are fully enjoying that life.  They did recently trade their fifth wheel and F-450 in on a diesel pusher so "phase II" has begun.

Duane, you've got me curious now.  I'll check it mileage vs. gallons used, the old fashioned way.  But I can't imagine that both trucks would be off by that much.

Ace....7 mpg.....I'd have that ruck in auto trader so fast.  I haven't talked to (or read on the forums) anybody in a few years that got that poor of mileage.  I couldn't afford to go anywhere at that rate.   Those 40' class A diesel pushers towing a towed get better mileage than that.  :nixweiss:

My 32' class A gas will get 8.5-9 MPG towing my 2 bike box trailer at 60-65MPH. At 70-80MPH it drops to 7.5 MPG (rig fully loaded). Most folks I have spoken with that have diesel pushers (which will be what we get next to also full time) are only getting in the 6-9 MPG range

Not to get in to a debate about mileage in this thread but I shopped class A diesel vs. gas and once I learned that diesel gets better mileage (comparing the same vehicle (or at least length and weight) I then compated class A dp vs. the diesel truck and 5th wheel.  I quick google search will reflect that a diesel motor will get better mileage.

Yep, there are some of those 45' class A dps out there pulling a towed that are only getting 9 mpg (lower mileage if they're older) but if you were to get a gas motor to pull that same weight and size, the gas mileage would be much worse.  That's one of the many reason people go the expense to get in to a dp.  I think you'll be much happier with that dp than you are with your current little gas rig.

Congrats!  And I will be looking forward to some of the many stories that should be generated with new life style.

We had a 5ver toy hauler when my kids were young and we raced MX nearly every weekend on the east coast. Some of the best times.
Empty nesters starting next year so who knows maybe its time to get another one.

Love the getting rid of "the sticks and bricks"

ENJOY!

I was so used to wearing a watch that right after I turned in my retirement instructions, I took the watch off just to get used to NOT wearing one.  That was almost 3-1/2 years ago and the only time I wear one now is when I travel or go out on the town with Patty.  And even then, it's mostly for looks, as I like the look of the Seiko dive watch but I don't miss the weight.  Heck, if I absolutely gotta know what time it is, I check my cell phone if I'm not in the car!

JC, will you be bringing the unit to Eureka Springs?   Sure would like to get a look at it.

No, I'll not be making it to ES.  This project just listed for sale this week and I get a nice little "stay on bonus" if I'm here until the last day close of escrow.  Can't afford to pass that up but I'll be heading out immediately there after.  Still hope to make it to the GTG in Cody, Wy. and if I do, I'll have it there.

You can go see this model, Momentum 376TH at a Grand Design dealership near you.  It's the ultimate toy hauler, that's for sure.  Looking on the owner's forum, people are selling their other brands that are only a couple of years old to get in to this model.  And a lot of people that ride (some have other brands of motorcycles) have this model.

Stunning JC! I love that walk around bed design. I was looking at the Thor Outlaw class As before buying this house. Didn't much care for the "crawl in" bed as I get older. Yours solves it in such a smart way. Looks like Babe and ShyGuy are ready to roll.
What are you going to do with that beautiful colormatched trailer? Better not sell it. I want it as a package deal when I buy your bike. ;)
Plenty of room for you next to my house if you get missing the salt air when you wake up. You guys are always welcome.

That last picture looks like you have a handy place to park the bike mostly under that front pullout?
The whole rig is fabulous, JC.  Congrats to you and Babe!

JC, love this!! My wife and I looked at this exact model a month ago. We are leaning toward doing exactly what you are doing. Any chance you can post some pics on how you installed your bike mount, thanks!!! Also, enjoy your retirement!

Apparently a lot of Harley owners using these in their Momentums on the Grand Design Momentum facebook page.

For the safety factor, just had some new LED run/turn/brake lights added.  Wasn't much back there with the two stock oem lights way down low by the street surface.

This one is with just the tail lights during the twilight hours last night....

And this one with the brakes on.......hopefully all those texters will see me before it's to late.......

I will be adding the high visability tape for when I'm stopped and no lights on (such as a flat tire out in the middle of podunk America) or just pulled off on the side of the road, etc.

Satellite dish, hopper and joeys installed yesterday.  Had a conectivity issue for the bedroom TV and the outside TV.  So today they upgraded the hopper to a hopper w/sling at no cost to me.  The sling allows us to watch our recorded shows from anywhere in the world that has internet!  Who would've thought that?

One touch button, the dish unfolds and raises up and then seeks out the three satellites....all automatically.  When we move, it folds back down flat on the roof top so it actually ends up lower than the three A/C units.

Had it mounted on the very front, directly behind the front cap for a couple of reasons.  First off, my toy hauler has the forward living room and we wanted to penetrate the roof inside and behind the stereo and TV cabinet.  The TV raises up out of the cabinet and so the cables are hidden and a very short cable run on the roof.

The second reason is because with a mounted dish, trees in the older RV parks will often block satellite reception.  With the dish located at the very front, less likely to have interference from trees as RV parks do not have trees at the front of the RV space near the drive lane.  In this case, it's the advantage of the forward living room.

Your last posts were the first I've seen of this model. Looks pretty sweet as most don't take full timers into consideration. On the fence about a toy hauler or DP to pull the 24' trailer I bought for this future purpose. Was thinking about a MCI tour bus conversion at the time but hard/impossible to add slide outs. Looking at another 6 1/2 years to go and a seasoned unit might be in the cards. Good job on your selection.

Go to the first page of this thread to see the interior.

We were at the RV show looking at Tiffin diesel pushers.  Had actually looked at them for a couple of years and planned on pulling a 24' trailer with the bike and a Smart car.  We saw this floor plan with the living room up stairs, in the front, 3 A/Cs, outside kitchen, outside entertainment (TV and stereo), the living room has theater surround sound system and the two theater seats recline and have heat and massage.  Side by side refer/freezer, washer, dryer, solar panel on the roof, residential queen (vs. RV queen), built in generator, awnings full length with LED lighting and more interior room than the DP.  With the garage to keep the bike out of the rain and can load and unload by myself using the B&W Biker Bar.....no tie down straps needed so I can load or unload by myself.  And when we get where we're going and get set up then we also have the truck to drive in bad weather.  And you can order it with full body paint and dual pane windows.  :2vrolijk_21:

Here's a link to the specs........  https://www.granddesignrv.com/showroom/2018/toy-hauler/momentum/floorplans/376th

We're going to do a little of that Workamper stuff.  Work 20 hrs. a week (10 hrs. each)  in trade for your RV space and full hook ups.  I'll do maint. and she'll work in the office.  Most workamping jobs are a 4 to 6 month commitment.  Once in awhile I see one posted for just two or three months.  Looking forward to that, also.

Added a couple of photos to the garage area of our toy hauler......one of Molly and another of my riding the Snake up on Mullholland Dr.

Babe walked across the street and as she approached the back, thought I'd put a flat screen in the back of the garage......as if three TVs aren't enough.  :nixweiss:

For the year!  :o

Our domain is now officially South Dakota.  It took us less than an hour total to change the registration on the truck, the 5th wheel and my Harley and for Babe and I to both get SD driver's license.  I could not believe how quick and simple it was.  No driver's test, not even a written test and they handed us our new license in five minutes once she took our pictures.  Amazingly simple and amazingly fast...........compared to California, anyway.  :nixweiss:

And many of you will recognize Needles Hwy.  It's a challenge to get a car through several of those tunnels.  It was a real challenge doing it in a dually!  Going back today on the bike......just cuz I can.  :P

These photos are taken through my front windshield as I folded the mirrors in and proceeded through.  The couple on the bike at the far end videoed me coming through in my Superduty dually.  They are on a CVO and from Vancouver, BC, Canada.  They didn't know anything about this forum so I did what I always do....gave them a business card for this forum.

This tunnel is called "Eye Of The Needle" and that's where the name "Needles Hwy." comes from.

And for those of you that have been through Custer State Park and on the Wildlife Loop, you'll recognize these culprits.  They are the official Custer State Park food inspectors.  They stop each vehicle and shake you down for food.  They are not bashful.....they will put their head right in your vehicle.....but my truck was a little to high for them....

So where is the "first stop"?

We've already stopped several times Alan.  See my FB page.  Posting a new ride report tomorrow on here........just for you.   :P

By the way, as I was leaving Sturgis this morning I noticed my "check engine" light and the "battery" light were both on so I drove straight to Black Hills Harley Davidson back in Rapid City (about 20 miles).  By the time I got to the dealership my volt meter was down to 8-9 volts so I had a pretty good idea it was the stator.

It was the stator and compensator.  They replaced both under the extended warranty.  I knew the compensator was getting ready to go out due to how it would kick back when I'd go to start it after it had been sitting for awhile.  Anyway, $50 deductable on a bill that would have been $1017.....so an inconvenience but I' happy I didn't get stuck on the side of the road waiting for a flat bed.

Well we've been here in Tampa for the past week.  Came here primarily for the huge RV Show.  We went two days in a row and still didn't see everything......just to much.  But we saw enough that many started to look the same.  Of course the stand outs were the Prevost, the Newell, the Foretravel, etc.  I'm afraid if the bank roll were there it would be between one of the Foretravel and the Newell.  The Newell even had a Kurig coffee spout in the door of the refer.

Time to move on.  Today we'll be moving up to an RV resort in Umatilla, Florida.  We'll be there for the next couple of months, using that for our home base while we explore all of Florida.  A couple of members of this forum already making plans to visit us there so looking forward to that.  I'm sure we'll be seeing more of you in Daytona Bike Week.

Gotta go load up now.........

Last Sat. Unbalanced and johnsachs came and hooked up with me.  Harry led us on a 240 miles ride that took us on some back roads up past Lake George and the Two Bananas and the St. Johns River.  I have to apologize as I forgot my Nikon on this ride and so I wasn't able to get the customary pics on the fly.

Harry stopped beside a cow pasture to show us some cows that I'd never seen before, Ankole-Watusi (aka African Watusi) cows.  They have some very strange (by American standards) horns.....

As I arrived back at our current RV park, I noticed some birds that I'd never seen before......or at least had never been close to.  Kiro tells me they're sandhill cranes.  These and many other kinds of birds are very friendly.  I suspect it's because this RV Resort is a 55+ community and these birds get hand fed on a regular basis.

All in, it was a good day and a great ride.  Lookin forward to another one Harry and John!   This retired life is kind of tuff to keep up with but I've never been accused of being a quitter so I'll keep on doin what I'm doin...

Let's Roll (Gabe) is here in Florida visiting his mother.  Coincidentally, she lives just a few miles from here.  Gabe showed up for the first Western CVO Owners GTG up in Reno back in 2004.  Gabe came by a few days ago and we visited for awhile.

Babe went over to the Clearwater area to visit with her daughter and grandaughter for the weekend so I rolled back over to Daytona Beach.....took my Nikon this time.
