Title: 2019 CVO Street Glide with Stage IV - Intake whistle 4K RPM at WOT
Post by: pooj10 on April 08, 2019, 08:58:31 PM
I had a stage IV kit installed on my CVO Street Glide when I first purchased the bike. I am extremely happy with the upgrade. One thing unusual I have noticed though at around 4k RPM WOT I get a whistling noise through the air cleaner, at least that is what I think it is. Has anyone experienced this? I have the high flow air cleaner installed as well. Would appreciate your thoughts.

I must have missed this post before now.  That sound is probably caused by the large amount of air being drawn through the air filter assembly.  It's more noticeable with a quieter bike; when new and stock, my 2011 SERGU did it even at 10 to 20% throttle.  Louder pipes, a K&N hi flow air filter, and increased valve train noise over time "fixed" it.

Stupid question but what does the stage IV add to a CVO?  I assumed this thing is already maxed out as far as Harley can do.  At least at $45k it should be.

Ha. I guess I deserved that. I meant to ask, what products are changed from the stock CVO?

Well, a quick update as we just got back from a 4K ride around the North Eastern US. No sumping, no trans to primary oil transfer and I love the stage IV upgrade for the way I ride. That whistling noise still annoys me as I think has to do with the large volume of air going across the edge  of the throttle body plate. I may try and polish the edge to smooth the transition and see if I can reduce that noise this winter as it sounds like it is coming from under the air filter.

You may want to consult with some of the throttle body experts before messing with the throttle plate.  And I seriously doubt a whistling noise is being caused by the edge of the plate at wide open throttle.  A high pitched whistle implies a small area high volume situation.  I'd be more inclined to look for a small air leak in the intake system, which would cause a whistle type sound.  Don't forget the TB tube that is plugged with a rubber cap on non-California bikes, or the TMAP sensor, or the gaskets between the TB and manifold, the manifold and heads, or the TB and air cleaner.

Sounds like an intake/vacuum leak like Jerry says. Not the most thorough or scientific approach but try a short burst of starting fluid/ether around your throttle body and intake manifold with the bike warmed up and running. If the idle increases you've found your leak.

Good luck.

im with grouchy on this one... you should be able to locate it with simple intake leak diagnosis methods  :2vrolijk_21:

Well, have not been able to identify any intake leaks so far around the throttle body. The dealer has told me that is the nature of the beast with stage 4 on the M8s. I will give HPI a call and see what their thoughts are. Maybe I outght to send my original throttle body to them for a rework.

Take the air filter off and run it again.....does it still whistle......if so it's not the filter.....if no whistle is there go to a better breather.
