Clutch Grabbing
« on: November 28, 2024, 07:39:21 AM »

I'm a new owner of an FXSTSSE2 and it's my first Harley.  The dealer who sold it said they performed a full service and changed the fluids.  Last weekend I took it for a short ride, about 50 miles, and When I got off the freeway, encountering a bit of heavy traffic, the clutch started grabbing and I couldn't come to a complete stop without stalling the engine.  Once I got going again, the problem went away, until I came to another long light.  I'm guessing either the primary oil is over filled or the clutch is not properly adjusted.  All comments, ideas, opinions and suggestions are welcome, and greatly appreciated. Thanks

No adjustment in your hydraulic clutch.
I would bleed the system completely replacing the old fluid.
I believe you have moisture in your system.

Yes, check the primary level…maybe actually check with the tech who did the service and ask about the clutch fluid as well…..sometimes the service department doesn’t do what the salesperson said they do.

Go to the CVO Springer threads and look for my clutch fluid change thread.

Quite pernickity to do but do-able by a careful amateur.

Try not to shear the piddly bleed nipple it's obvious behind the top exhaust downpipe.

Soak it for ages in some kind of penetrant fluid, I used CRC here in Australia.

Then I used a vacuum pump to draw the new fluid down, try not to "pump" it with the lever if you can avoid it !!

Here's that thread, hope it helps.

As for primary fluid levels , it the bike is drained thru the 5/8 "sump" plug then exactly 1US quart bottle is all you need , cant go wrong really.

Put copper antisieze on the torx 27 mini bolts as you put the derby cover back on. Just SNUG, no brutality, I see it from other service places all the time.
