How many miles before you have replaced tires?
« on: May 26, 2008, 08:56:22 PM »

I replaced my front tire the other day at 10,500 miles.... still have some life on the back one.  What mileage has anyone else replaced their tires at?

I generally replace my front tire at near 10,000 miles and my rear tire at about 7,000 miles...

It's funny that this topic came up as I was just going to start a thread on it.

I got 12,000 on my first rear and 11750 on my second. I had to replace the second because Tbone was getting nervous about me riding on it with that many miles. Anyway, I just changed the front: Dunlop D420F $122.95, 9 X 1/4 oz Wheel wts @ .30 $2.70, Labor $65: Total: $190.65 for a new front tire.

Interesting that the front tire needed replacing on the Dyna before the rear one. :nixweiss: :confused5:

Now that you mention it, you're right!  Never heard of that before.

I guess I should have added that I got 24209 miles on the front before replacing it.

When I ran stock tires, I changed the reat at ~7K miles.  My stock front tire had 18K miles when I changed to Metzelers, and it still had some life left.  Not sure how long the Metzelers are gonna last.  I've put roughly 2500 hard miles on them since they were installed on 19 APR, and they're holding up nicely.  I'm thinking 9-10K miles on the rear tire and a new front tire every other rear tire.

1st rear 11000,second rear 8000, third 4500. First front 17000. Bad pattern on rear need to adjust something. Throttle?

On my SERK I got close to 10K on the back and 20K on the front with Metzler 880 for both. The Dunlops were gone at around 1200 miles by choice back in 2003.  With the amount of wet riding here in the North West I may be changing earlier than I would in a drier climate.

On the Ultra I'm getting 10k on the rear tires, average.  Front appears to be good until 25k or so (20k on the bike now).

I use a tire tread wear gauge & check 'em every so often.  Eyeballing tires is not good enough IMHO.

Never let the front get worn into slicksville, but sometimes the back tires get into the red zone, & once in the mountains, beyond.

My rear tire was worn smooth and replaced by 6,000 miles.  The front looked nearly new.  I guess I liked the break feeling better with the rear brake since it doesn't throw the passengers into the back of my helmet as hard.  I also found myself down shifting a lot more after switching out the pipes.  It sounds so COOL with the new rumble but terrible on the rear tire.  I've since started using the front brake more and down shifting less.  I hope to go 2 for 1 (rear to front tire changes) during service intervals so it doesn't seem the bike is always in the shop.  That would put me at about 13,000 miles on the front and 7,000 on the rear for the next change.

Tire wear, isn't that subjective? all depends on you and your riding. 2up, 1up, trailer, no trailer, light throttle, heavy throttle, narrow front tire, fat front tire. Some play it safe and replace them before the wear bars pop up and some ride until they have unsafe wear on them. your tires keep the shinny side up, don't skimp with them. I have 11,000 on my stock tires and the dealer told me I still have some life in them, but I'm having them changed anyways to keep the life in me..... :2vrolijk_21:  just my 2 cents

7,300 miles on bike, replacing the rear VERY soon, going with a Michelin. Front has probably 2,000-3,000 miles left. Rear would have lasted longer, but have had to do some "quick stopping" due to cager indifference...
