Need Help With Backplate...
« on: May 19, 2007, 03:24:00 PM »

I just recently got a Screamin' Eagle® Air Cleaner Backplate Kit and went to install it today.

Here is a pic -

I thought this would be an easy job, just take off what I thought I had (Screamin' Eagle Backplate) and replace it with the chrome one. One problem.... what I thought I had wasn't what I saw when I took the A/C cover off. You'll see below what I had on my bike.

After checking the box with my old breather kit (stock) in it and finding out that what I had installed was - 1450 Stage 1 EFI Kit P/N 29773-02A

From looking at the parts breakdown on the instruction sheet for the chrome backplate and looking at what I have it seems that I will need to get the following parts...

Plug Breather P/N 29557-05 (2)
"O" Ring P/N 29557-05 (2)

I'm thinking the stud air cleaner mounting (3) [P/N 29447-99A] are what I have now. Is this correct? There is also mention of a gasket (P/N 29583-01) also, but I'm going to be adding the Chrome EFI Cover along w/this and I noticed it had two gaskets already in it (sorry I don't have that parts list w/me at computer).

Couple of questions I have concerning this...

1. Along w/the questions about parts needed to make the chrome backplate work can anybody see anything else I will need?

2. What the heck backplate is that I have on the bike now, and will changing it to the chrome one with the different setup have any affect on the tune/map I have now? TIA

Hey Fired00d,
I am not an expert but it looks like your old backplate is a stock one with the black breather tubes. I think the stage one kit just got you a free flowing filter and got rid of the large black back cover for the air cleaner.
A Screamin Eagle backplate gets rid of those black tubes for the breather and you replace them with  "banjo bolts". If you could see the parts laid out for a Screamin Eagle kit I think you will need the above bolts and o rings to make your own kit so it is chrome.

It's a different backplate then stock. The stock one was black plastic and encased the entire filter element with some holes on the bottom. I'm just wondering if at the time I purchased this one was it what was available at the time or I got NOS (New Old Stock). You can see in this post/thread - "Roll Your Own" SE Air Cleaner a breakdown of the parts to the SE Breather. In this picture item "A" I found in the box w/the old parts and looking at my shop/parts manual/instruction sheet these were stock items.

The pictures weren't able to show it, but where you see those black tubes coming thru the backplate they are attached to the chrome piece that is circled below on the inside next to the EFI.

I know what you mean, even though I now have a Big Sucker stage 1 I think it installs the same as your chrome backplate and the black tube system is replaced by the banjo bolt method.

I don't think a retune will be needed as the old one was free flowing.

Gary:
You'll need to get all the parts in the "Roll your own" kit (except the back plate and element) as you have the older style of SE air cleaner kit.

Jim,
Compared to the picture of my SE air cleaner kit, and what's in the picture below from GRC's post I was thinking I would only need the following..

Plug, Breather P/N 29557-05 $9.68 (2)* This is what is attached to item "A" (Screw, breather P/N  29465-99). I still have item "A" from the stock breather that I can use unless you think I should get new ones, and according to the SE Backplate Service Parts Sheet I was to reuse these for the SE Breather Kit.

"O" Ring P/N 11292 $1.07 (2)*

* Numbers in () are quantity needed.

In the picture below item "B" the studs, aren't those the same as what I have now?

I also have the EFI Intake Manifold Cover P/N 27483-07A to install along with this and it came with two gaskets (P/N 27486-07) one goes on each side of this chrome cover on install. Wouldn't/couldn't these be used instead of the gasket in the picture below? My parts manual and the SE Backplate Service Parts Sheet have the gaskets listed as this P/N 29583-01.

Yes, you can reuse your studs, Breather screw from the stockAC, and the gaskets from the EFI cover kit will work as well, I would replace the orings.

A side note on the EFI cover, you may need to bend it downward a bit to prevent it from contacting the underside of the tank. I would also place a rubber bumper on the bottom of the tank to prevent it from hitting.

OK, thanks. Any kind of rubber bumper that will stick on to tank should be sufficient shouldn't it? I could probably pick up something like that at hardware store.

One other question concerning the use of loctite. I know I should use them on the stud screws that go into the throttle body, the filter screws, and the cover screw, but should I use loctite on the "breather screw" that goes into the heads?

I would use liquid pipe thread sealant, not the tape stuff.  ;)

Use Blue loctite on all of the AC bolts.

That is the version of the SEAC before the current version.  I had it on my 2004.  The hoses go to the chrome spacers that are hollow and attach to the head via breather bolts.  In you case, you need the whole new version of the kit minus the HD filter and then get the KN filter HD 0800.
I noticed yor existing filter had a gasket on the outboard side.  The 07 SERK has that to keep the air filter cover from hitting the two round chrome stand offs that attach to the head.  You may need to space out the air filter cover.  Just something to check.
