2009 What's the deal with the air cleaner?
« on: November 12, 2008, 01:51:24 AM »

First, I thought I read somewhere that the 2009 CVO Ultra had the equivalent of the stage I air cleaner from the factory.  Then my salesman told me that it does not and I will need to change that when I add pipes and fuel management system.  Today, the parts guy told me that it already has the stage I from the factory.

Do I need to replace anything to open this thing up or not?

Wow!  I just sold and shipped that backing plate yesterday.  I had an extra, as I replaced mine with the chrome one on my last bike.  I will assume that it takes a different part number for the '09, even if it doesn't, just so I don't feel bad.

Great Question....I would like to hear what other 2009 FLHTCUSE4 members have done to solve this problem.  Here is what I understand.  If you look in the HD SE parts catalog for a stage 1 air cleaner P/N 29260-08 they clearly state that for the 08 and later CVO models it requires to also purchase part number P/N 29121-07.  The dealer had one in stock so I had them open it up to show me what it was. This part is a new air cleaner cover that replaces your stock cover  Part number 29121-07 and provides a round depression identical to the stock non CVO air cleaner.  The round depression allow the base of the Air cleaner to rest in as you torque down the center bolt.  What you end up giving up is the nice oval 110 screaming eagle decal that is attached in the oval portion of the CVO cover along with the design theme.   I paid way to much money to remove something that I like.  What other options are out there to get a better breathing air cleaner but maintaining the stock cover?

I saw that also and couldn't find part #29121-07 to see what it was.  I'll be pretty upset if it's the same as the regular model covers, since I just sold and shipped one of those yesterday also.  I don't want to give up the cover that is on there either.  Something is amiss.

Does anyone have a "football" style air cleaner cover, with one hole, that says "103 Screamin Eagle?"

I'd like to buy it.

Check the link attatched, Go with the "Max Flow" filter and you can choose the backing plate you desire, Of course Chrome is the way to go.  :2vrolijk_21:

The MaxFlo still is mounted by one center bolt, not 2 bolts like the SE has.  I'm still wondering whether a change is necessary for the '09 air filters or not.  I had someone tell me to cut more holes in the black plastic encasement behind the air cleaner and leave it as it is.  There are already several holes cut out across the bottom of that piece.  I don't figure this is where the problem would be if it does need changed.  I also spoke to a dealer service manager and he told me not to do anything until the December catalog comes out.  He said he was hoping that there may be a new replacement SE Air Cleaner that will do exactly what we want to do.  Fingers crossed!

If I just get the SE backplate, do I need the other items that come with the kit.  Besides the air cleaner I see 2 rubber breathers and a few metal things.  Can the existing parts (minus the cover) fit with the new SE backplate?

I thought this looked interesting.  Anyone have one of these yet?

My logical thought process is that if the existing air filter element must have 2 bolt holes through it, since the cover does.  If the backing plate to go with the bike has 2 bolt holes also, then there is no fitment problem.  I am going to have to take that cover off and see what is in there.  Perhaps the air filter also has a hole in the middle for this change of application, and then the cover is the only thing that does not fit.  The rubber breathers and bolts will still be needed for the new backing plate.  I think I'm done theorizing and listening to what the dealers are saying.  I think it's time to see what's in there and then get a look at the actual back plate that is supposed to go with this and see where all the confusion is coming from.

Jbbrown73 may have the answer there.  That new K&N filter looks like it has the bolts holes to match up with the SE cover.  I hope so.  That will save some headaches.

I was looking at this on K&N's website and they don't show it for the 110's, only the 96's.  Aren't the throttle bodies the same?   :duhk: Unless it's because the filter cover is different.

They take the same Harley part, except for the CVO models, it shows the need for the new cover.  I looked at that K&N part again and it's questionable whether those outer holes are there to mount the cover to.  The center is raised up and it looks like it too mounts the cover with just the center hole.  If that's the case, we are back to square one.

I bought a 29260-08 for my 09 SEUC.
Didn't know I needed the other part to make it work.
I know now, but still don't need it.
