CVO 110" fuel mods
« on: January 04, 2015, 11:31:00 AM »

Hi all

I'd like to address this question to a Guru of mods and CVO'
I currently have a 2009 CVO 110" engine on the bench.  It has 100'000 miles on it and needs a rebuild from the bottom to the top.
Before i crack it open and enter this can of worm, can i use this engine in a custom build and carb the engine, remove all sensors in the heads and just use the engine as a big block power train?
It would look and probably be lots of fun in a old EVO FLH i have.

I had read several threads on 96" TC being carburetted but nothing on more recent engines...

Thanks for the feedback

I you are going to have to completely rebuild it.........make it a boat anchor(original design) and stick a SS124 in it and be done with tons of power.

Why pitch the EFI? Use an S&S throttle hog with appropriate injector size, get a good tune by a competent tuner and you'll be happy, happy, happy!

Hi Bob,

The EFI and TB are still on the other bike.  It was a swap for an EFI bigger bore....
I only received the engine... Ignition and fuel missing... but its free so hey.
Like the 96" - shaving off a Super E/G manifold by 1/16" on either side is a fit... then a carb and you are gone.
I'm not sure about the CVO's clearance, the electronics in the heads and so I'm asking the group...
I'm hoping to drop into a bare frame - no electronics at all... just the way I like them... no computer, no headaches, no fuss, no butt scratchin...  Air, Fuel, Fire....

OOPS! Sorry, I missed the changeover to a a custom bike.
Sure you can car it. There are folks here who have and will chime in with a list of stuff to convert it to a carb.
I would consider S&S for ignition, wiring, and of course, a carb.
Have fun with your project!

I'm interested in this question as well.  I just posted a similar question in the Twin Cam forum about a "B" motor without any of the HD wiring harness etc.

I know a carb is NOT as good as the EFI, but it is simpler to setup and run.  But the ignition stumps me a bit.

My project will be a reverse trike with the motor up front coupled to a Mazda Miata 5spd running to the rear via a Goldwing GL1800 rear swingarm assembly.

The cycle/car will be similar to the new Morgan Three Wheelers built in England now.  But hopefully mine will be a bit more "classic" in styling with some tweaks of my own.

Good luck with your bare bike project.

the real issue is that the twin cams do NOT have any facility for points - or efi that goes where the points went. inside the points cover on a twin cam is ... ta da... NOTHING not even a hole into the cam chest.

there ARE mods

first you can put a morris magneto on the engine - then it will work just fine with a carb.

there was somebody somewhere making a points kit.....

either way its several large to make it work - be better off with a full aftermarket EFI kit from s&s etc to run the engine - though the mag kit is really awesome.

Timo...

Quite True !  I was contemplating the Dynamo as it makes it quite exclusive and very distinct... my kind of set up!
I gather therefore that the Super E/G manifold machines to a narrower 0.125" is the right approach to carbureting the twins...

PS:   2015 is the 50th Anniversary of the Electra Glide FLH w/electric starter &  last year of the Pan Head !   I might be partial to my bike above... I do appreciate the compliments... If you park it along side a 2015 Road King - you can easily tell where the new bikes got their super looks... lollll

Ride safe !

Stand alone ign system is simple Thunder heart , makes a bolt on unit with coil , Wire up 5 or 6 wires and you are done.

We use it mainly for MM bikes to carb.  I sold one to a guy that used a late model evo case that had a crank sensor. He said it worked great. Software for ign timing is free to download.  It is about the most basic kit I have seen. All you need is a crank  sensor.

Thunderheart?  Ask the older big dog guys how those work.

Haha! Replaced one of those last summer after the owner told me all it needed was a new starter.... which it did and also stated it was one of the first Big Dogs made. Spyke said the starters soon after were replaced by an offshore maker. Evidently the pinion gears on those were changed and made of unobtanium. If that needs replaced there aren't any on planet earth and have to custom made to stay with that setup. After replacing the starter, I found it had no fire!  ;D

After some diag tests it was obvious someone hacked the wiring up attempting to fix a previous failed OE T-H ignition. I was happy to see that bike leave! I thought T-H told me when I ordered the new one they were not making them anymore and was lucky they had one remaining in stock?  :nixweiss:  It was a simple fix after buying the new module, software and cable to communicate with it.

Touring T-H facility early last year was impressive how "in house" everything was and how many things they have been involved with including the design and testing of some of the Indian engines, the dyno they built in house to test the engines and tons of forward controls, ignitions, speedo's and tach's that were used for the latest chopper craze. They will be at the Expo this year. It will be interesting to see if they bring anything new to the table with the ThunderMax since that seems to be their bread and butter now.
