All of you are 100% right!!! Wasn't trying to prove how stupid I was(easily done), just a combo of things that usually never happen together. Won't happen again............FOR SURE!!!!!

Been there done that, not on purpose. I checked the tire before we left on our trip to Myrtle and saw the feathering. Didn't catch anything else that would indicate the wear (plenty of tread depth left). Pulled into Myrtle on the way to the hotel and the bike felt sluggish. Dropped my feet off of the boards and they were closer to the ground than what I remember. Said to momma hold on I'm pulling over right now. Called HOG and had the bike towed to Renegade Wheel for a new tire. We were lucky. HOG was great, Tow truck driver was top notch, Renegade wasted no time getting us back on the road. 800 miles with a loaded bike on hot flat roads with a tire that already had miles on it ate the tire pretty quick. While out riding yesterday "tire replacement" was my advice to the guys heading to Sturgis in a few months whether they need it or not!

The closer to the core, the softer the rubber so what appears like maybe 1,000 miles left....that rubber goes really fast.

Thanks 2k for bringing this issue to everybody's mind.

Things are not always linear. I had a near-new Avon Venom get like that in two days due to cord separation.
I was on a trip in Eureka Springs on my RK with a 'near-fresh' set of Venoms with 2200 miles on them. I ride fairly aggressively and some friends and I were "tearing it up". I noticed some vibration and back at the hotel found that my rear tire looked like the O.P.'s tire but only a third of the way around, and not in the center. The rest of the tire had substantial tread, in fact, looked new everywhere.
Discovered that at walking speed, the rear of the bike rose and fell with rotation. Got it to the dealer and a stock 402.

Amazing you are safe and it sure helps us to remember to always check the basics. There isn't much that keeps us off the ground!

Wow!. The Lord was watching watching over you and got you home Safe. Wouldn't have taken much to go flat at the worst time. Like passing at high speed, or in a tight turn, in traffic that someone on your tail could run you over. I would count you Blessings.

A blow out at any speed will sure be cause for an uneasy feeling in the pit of your stomach.  And it'll pucker your butt so tight you couldn't drive a nail through it with a sledge hammer. :nervous:

Jimmy, I'm glad you made it back safe. I use to stretch the mileage, then one day I thought about the wife, daughter, & mom, all of whom rode on back. back then $150.00 for a tire at even only getting 10k out of it, that's $15.00/1000 mi. my ones I love the most mean more than trying to get $15.00 more out of a tire. as I usually post in the new member section :
RIDE SAFE !   BE CAREFUL !!!!!  my friend, hop to see you & Big Lew soon. take care

When I was a kid, I would ride anything...bald tires, dry rot, didn't make a difference. I would ride anything for the thrill of riding. If you are on this site you are probably past that. When I explain things to check to new riders I make a point to say that the amount of tread on the ground is less than the amount of skin on the palm of your hand....Do you really want to risk so much riding on so little. Tires are Cheap in the big scheme of things. change em often. You got lucky...You must be sleeping with an angel....tell her we all said hello!

Ps happy this ended well  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

When you can actually see the air inside the tire, it's pretty much due for a swap-out. How many miles did you have on this one?

2K, thanks for posting this, it's never easy to put yourself in the position where you put yourself up as a target...The picture of that tire is enough to keep tire checking at the top of the routine look over of my bike for sure. Glad you got it changed before it let go.
