Ohlin Rear Shock service
« on: March 14, 2016, 10:13:24 AM »

For those of you with Ohlin rear shocks you know they should be rebuilt about every 30~35K miles or 3~4 years which ever comes first.

I was at the Ohlin both in Daytona where I got the Shocks at Biketober Fest 2014.  I was asking about turn around time for rebuild.  They said ride my bike up to the booth, they would remove my shocks, put loners on.  Then come back the next morning and they would re-install my rebuilt shocks.

Saved a lot of money and time.  No shipping charges, no tax and 25 dollars off the cost of the rebuild.  That was an awesome service from they.  This is they first year they decided to do this.  They will be doing it at the Rallys they go to.

For what they charge for those when new, the rebuilds should be free for LIFE.

The cost of a rebuild is $250.00.

Yes the shocks are expensive just under 1K new.  However way better than the HD hand adjustable premium shocks, way better than progressives.  Neither of which are rebuildable and worn out by 40K miles.  The HD shocks I mentioned are over 500 and the progressives I had were 700.

These are easy to move from bike to bike, so when I trade these will go with me to the new bike.  I will never use anything but Ohlin on the back of a Harley.

My one rear 3-3 developed a slight oil leak, and since they have around 20,000 miles on them, I shipped them to Howard for a rebuild.

It cost me more than $250, but Howard replaced all internal parts. Not knocking the Ohlins guys that did yours, but who knows if they replaced everything or not.

Well, if I believe them which I do, they replaces all the seals and rings, all wear items and new oil.

I do not think that Ohlin would jeopardize there reputation by taking a short cut.

I know, again not slamming those reps. If I was at the rally I would have had them do the rebuild too for that price. I suppose Howard charges more as.his cost is obviously higher than the manufacturer.

How do you know for sure that Howard replaced all the internal parts?

Did Howard tell you that he takes apart brand new Ohlins shocks that he sells before delivery and does his tweak to them? I don't know about everyone else but that's what he told me every time I talked to him about buying new shocks. It has to make you wonder if they started leaking at 20,000 miles.

From what I witnessed firsthand last week in Daytona, I'd be a little skeptical...

I had the same talk with Howard about the tweeking, and when I called to ask about purchasing a set of Ohlin's he immediately stated he didn't sell Ohlins and his modified shock is a better product, He took about 15 minuets to explain or rather ( SELL ) his shock and why it is a better shock. He has built quite a reputation around the HD community and I'n not knocking him hell he had me sold! It's been a while since Iv'e looked at his web page but if I remember correctly he didn't show an original Ohlin shock every thing was a custom product, Before I purchased from Howard I looked at Ohlin"s web page to get more info about their shocks for HD's and to find the retailers of their shock and Howard is not listed , but there is a shop listed in Massachusetts called Computrack of Boston I took a look at his web page and then called to talk with a guy named Peter who owns the shop, This winter I decided to take a 40 mile ride to visit his shop and I was pretty impressed with what I saw, he is a shop that specializes in modification of racing bike suspension and there were at least 20 or so bikes there for off season suspension mods and frame alignment, these were Pro circuit track bikes. I ended up purchasing the Ohlins from him and will install them when I get my bike back from GMR and if any tweeking is needed Computrack can make the necessary mods for me. I mentioned to Peter the pride that the members of CVOHARLEY have of their machines while I was there and He listed as a vendor on this Forum he's at least worth a phone call!!!!     David H.

When I came across the Ohlins tent in Daytona and talked to Matthew, I was explaining that I didn't think my setup was right and didn't really understand at all the sag, dampening and compression settings.  He took my scooter in, put it on the lift , and completely started from scratch.  First spacers at top not installed, sag wrong, then totally diagrammed the settings and taught me to adjust them in a way that I totally understood.  I just couldn't get that from phone and emails when I bought the stuff from Howard (me not him)  That kid new his product inside out and wouldn't take a nickel for the hour and a half makeover.  Thought we were gonna wrestle when I stuffed a 20 in his pocket.  1200 miles back to Dallas and this bike has NEVER felt better.

Do you think the Ohlins tent would do fronts as well? Ride it in, leave it all day, and pick it up with Ohlins up front to match what I have in the rear?
