Rear brake light switch.
« on: September 30, 2019, 11:53:04 AM »

I think it's time for a new one. The front brake illuminates the brake light, but not the rear.

Is it as simple to replace at it looks? Just unscrew the old one, screw in the new one, and bleed the rear brake system? Do I have to get the part at the dealer? Is it HD specific, or is there a matching part at the local auto parts store?

2006 CVO Ultra, no abs computer controlled brake system.

Check with your dealer. There was a recall on those, although you may have run out of time, but it's worth a phone call.

If it was a safety recall it should be covered.
Some recall do have a end date, some are a single service / unlimited time & mileage.
If not a covered recall than ensure the fluid is full, some rags to absorb drips and replace the switch quickly.  You should be able to bleed the switch connection than rinse off the brake fluid .
As long as no fittings or bleeder's are open during the service no air should enter the system past the switch location.
Bleeding is still a great idea to get clean fluid in the system.

I don't think the recall reached back to the 2006 model year.  I had the rear brake switch go out on my 2007 CVO Ultra and yes it is just as easy to replace as you described.  You can check to make sure it is the switch and not the wiring by unplugging the two connections to the switch and inserting a jumper wire between them.  When you turn the ignition on if the brake light comes on them you've verified that the wiring is OK and the switch is bad.

If only everything were so easy.

I didn't say it was easy,....LOL!!

I couldn't match the switch at the local auto parts store so I had to go to the dealer. The switch itself is 17mm (must be made overseas) and the bracket was a tight 5/8. Who would of thought metric on a Harley, right? I couldn't find the right size 1/4" hose to slip tightly on the bleeder nipple and ended up have to clean up the bled out fluid.

But, if that's all I have to complain about with that bike today, I'm okay with that.
