The stickiest/gripiest tyres for a SEEG ....
« on: July 03, 2007, 04:19:00 AM »

There is so much information on here now that it can be difficult to find historic posts.

Can someone tell me what tyres are percieved as the best for grip.

I am not concerned with load as I don't ride 2 up and don't try to overfill the bike when I go touring. I do ride in the rain though.

I am sure that this must have been discussed but haven't stumbled accross a previous post.

Thanks in anticipation.

Like Nidan stated, Avon, ME880's or the Dunlop Elite 3's are all stickier than the stock 402's..  Each tire has it's own pluses.  Matter of choice/availabilty.  None of them will wear like the stock tires but is worth the trade off to me.

I was amazed at the difference in putting a 150 Avon Venom Rear on my '05 SEEG.  Didn't do the front yet but I will now.  Rear is much better planted on the pavement, surefooted in the twisties.  Definately feel the front now squrrel around.  Put Lyndall Z's on the rear while I was there.  The better pad and stickier rubber make the rear work better.

Front is going on next as well as the Z's.....

Avons it is then ...

Current rear tyre;
Dunlop D402 30 17 23 DAF4 M17M MU85 B16 77H

Currenr front tyre;
Dunlop D402F MT90 B16 72H

There is just enough space to slide a finger between the rear fender and the sidewall. Although more rubber on the road appeals there does not seem to be too much space to allow for fitting a wider tyre on my stock 2005 SEEG rim.

I think that I will change them both. I don't speak "tyre-ese" so can anyone tell me what Avon Venoms to order that will go straight on without mods.

Many thanks.

So if I am understanding this correctly;

MT90 16's have a slightly lower load rating - 74H rather than 77H
MT90 16's are a little skinier - 133 rather than 140 mm

Call me thick .........

Tony,

For the rear you want the 140/90 B16, which has a 77 load index like the stock Dunlop.  It also is the same diameter, so your speedometer won't be affected.

Jerry

Let me update that a little.  Here are the sizes for the stock Dunlop as well as the 140 and 150 Avons:

D402   MU85 B16 77H   Diameter 25.71", Width 5.51"
Venom 140/90 B16 77H  Diameter 25.60", Width 5.60"
Venom 150/80 B16 77H  Diameter 25.20", Width 5.90"
Venom 150/80 B16 77V  Diameter 25.20", Width 6.20"

If you try the 150, go with the H speed rated tire, it is .39" wider than the Dunlop, but .3" narrower than the V speed rated tire.
