Anyone have experience with tire machines?
« on: March 22, 2011, 06:32:27 PM »

Am considering buying a tire machine if something good were also inexpensive enough to make it worthwhile.  There's been a local indie shop who would mount a pair of tires for $40-50 if they were carried in.  For that a couple times a year it wasn't worth it to consider doing it myself.

Took the tires and wheels for the Road King project there today and the price had doubled since last fall.  With two bikes and eventually three here and a few local friends or buddies who pull wheels here also the new cost might justify buying something.

Have seen the website for something called the No-Mar tire changer.  Several models there.  But no experience with any.  If anyone has worked with something that would cost a grand or less please share.

I bought one last year from Excel equipment. XL Tool 37" Standard Duty with Motorcycle adapters. I've changed several bike tires with it and countless car tires.

Let me know if you find something you like and I help with the cost.  It doesn't seem fair to ask you to change the tires and buy the machine.  :huepfenlol2:

Just did some quick research and No-Mar has an ebay store with what looks like decent prices and free shipping.

One other idea.  Let's ask Ken to go in on it also, he can bring ribs with him everytime he come over to use it. :2vrolijk_21:

Have seen the No-Mar advertisements but hadn't known anyone to actually use one until the mention in the post above.  Brad was kind enough to send a message describing his experience with an RC-100 Coats machine.  If could find a used one that might be an option also.

When doing a little homework on the topic in the last half hour also stumbled in to the machine at the following link:

http://www.derekweaver.com/update/W-M807_Motorcycle___ATV_Tire_Changer_Motorcycle_Tire_Changers_Product.aspx?id=45

It's a thousand bucks.  But that includes freight.  And it's an automatic machine.  Some tire profiles I could see easily being a pain in the ass for an old bald fat guy who's missing a finger.  Anyone have experience or insights in to a machine like this one?

Even at a grand it would pay for itself relatively quickly when compared to $80 or more per pair.  I'll probably change five sets every two years.  Add in Travis's and Susan's (does  she wear out tires?) and a couple of other locals who bring beer when they need wheels removed for tire changes and it adds up.

I have a JR pro and love it I have done so many tires.  It is very easy to use, the only issue i've had is with tube tires and I think that is because I have big hands.  They had a $100 off sale about a year ago and I had been using a buddies std machine and decided to get my own.  I got the JR pro machine, balancer, weights, & yellow thingy for around $850 I think.

I don't know, we've always trade her bikes in on a new one when her tires got worn.   :nixweiss:

Thanks guys.  It's hard not to be interested in that automatic powered machine mentioned above for $1k when manual machines can be close to that.  But have read a couple of reviews of that machine claiming some reliability issues; especially when not used regularly.  That could quickly kill any savings.  Even more annoying would be not being able to use it when you wanted to and having to haul wheels the dealership anyway because you were waiting for parts.

Dave, that JR Pro model is about $750 now with some discounts they're offering.  I've got a call in to them now awaiting response to question on a product line they're calling "Cycle Hill."  Wondering what the real differences are for its lower cost.

Travis, you think Susan has enough lead in her butt to use a manual tire machine.  It'd be fun for us to stand back and drink beer and watch her?

I have used the Coats automatic machine, and while it is double the money of the JR manual unit if you are running low profile tires it is worth the money. I would be a little hesitant to get the off-brand unit you had linked to for 800~ but you can't go wrong with Coats. Handy, K&L, Motion Pro, Coats, Snap-on, Jims these are usually tools that you can rely on. Just think of all the free beer and food you are going to get from your buddies. If later you decide to sell it you can recoup a good bit as well.  :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

I cannot comment on the matter.  I'll let you ask her though.   :nervous:  I find almost an activity to be fun if I'm allowed to stand back, drink beer, and just watch.   :drink:

I was thinking more like, throw it into the Bushtec and make house calls.
Could be a tire changing event at Maggie Valley.
Or Ribfest, ribs and tires, O that makes me feel all tingly.
