Cool New Fork Covers
« on: October 22, 2011, 12:15:48 PM »

Had seen the relatively common Ness covers and the new pieces from Mother Harley.  The OE for those has both a chrome and the black pieces Harley still only offers.  Had also seen and really like the "Yafterburner" pieces from Yaffe.  Have those on the Road King project so couldn't use them again on another bike in the same garage.  That would be oh so gauche.

Hadn't seen these until a week ago though.  From a company called SMT Machining.  When I ordered they only had black pieces in stock.  They pulled a black set out of inventory then stripped them and had them chromed.  Still had them here in about ten days.  Very pleasant folks to buy from and the parts are nice.  They're going on the old SERG sometime sooner rather than later.

Might even put them on the SEEG rather than the SERG.  SEEG already has the covers with the little B&S logo and the rolled bottom.  They're better than the plain stock pieces.  But there weren't a lot of options several years ago when they were installed.  SERG is the only set of forks with the plain covers though.  And they're pretty beat up.  So that's the most likely new home.

Flames run uphill Duane.  Easier to see with their stock pic of the parts done in black.

Duh - OK - we'll give a pass since ya ride a red bike  :huepfenjump3:

So are they stamped or a piece a billet? Looks like some nicely machine aluminum in the black pic.
I can't find them on their website, where did you grab the pic from?

Billet pieces.  Looks like nice machine work also.  New parts for them so short inventory.  Was told that's why the pieces aren't on the website yet.  Give 'em a call.  Very pleasant folks to work with.

Extremely cool mod Twolane. You know I love flames! Too bad they wouldn't work on a wide glide!

Very nice pieces. They will look great on the SERG or the SEEG.

Actually thought of you when I saw them Mark.  No suck luck as Wide Glide parts though.  I checked!

Very nice pieces. They will look great on the SERG or the SEEG.

The covers will probably go on the SERG mark.  I think they'd be a good complement to the framed engraved legs on the SEEG.  But the covers on the SERG are butt ugly and beat up.  So they actually need replacing.

This shop had some options other than the flames MJ.  The Yafterburner pieces from Yaffe are my favorite of all the current options I know of right now.  Ness has recently released something close to the Yafterburner pieces now too.  They're what Harley just released in black.  Though from Ness there's a chrome option also.  All the billet pieces look better than Mother Harley old pieces that give the impression of stamped tin though.  So I'm pleased to see any of the current options.

No, I'm skipping that part.  Put one of those on someone's bike here a few month's ago.  Like the look just fine.  Didn't like the amount of torque required on a relatively small allen headed fastener there on the end.  Someday in regular service that thing is going to round out.

WOW!!! Talk about customer service!!!! Went to a lot of trouble to make a customer happy. ALL retailers should be this way. Most would say....."Out of stock, it will be about 2 months."

I had the same impression.  Could've easily and correctly said "sorry, out of stock right now."  Instead they went above and beyond sent some really nice parts.

Was that your bike?

Black one, I remember.

I almost didn't put the super duper loctite on that during assembly despite the mftr instructions.  Tightening that small allen head gave me the heebie jeebies.  When it comes out again we'll hit it with a 1/4" impact wrench and let it break the loctite before pulling on it very hard by hand.

Worst case the forks, wheel and fender can all come out together and just be replaced with new stuff ??? !

Objective observer here.  It looked great.  Especially in complement with all the other matching bits Kermit got at the same time.  Still didn't like that axle fastner though.  But it'll be fine.  Really (gawd I hope so).

Much better than the plain tin covers.  The chromed engraving on the fork covers is now going to be a nice complement to the flamed housings on the front signal/running lights.
