American Elite tires
« on: August 22, 2012, 08:47:23 PM »

Anyone have feedback on the American Elite tires to replace the Dunlop D408F and D407 on a 09 and up Ultra as far as expected miles, wet / dry handling, cornering, noise etc.

Getting close to replacing both tires at the same time - cost of the Dunlops is right at $600 with free mounting.

I've been averaging a little over 15,000 miles on the rear and 23,000 miles on the front which is not bad compared to some but price continues to go up on tires that were overpriced from day one.

Any input would be appreciated.

I changed my front and rear stock tires at 17,500 miles (the rear was cupped badly).

I now have approximately 22,500 miles on the bike (5000 on the American Elites)..  They look like they are wearing well.  They aren't noisey.  Handle well in wet/dry conditions.

I don't have anything bad to say about them.  But also liked the original tires until the rear cupped and howled on curves.

Can't remember exactly what I paid but were cheaper than the HD branded Dunlops.

Will wait/see how long the American Elites last.   May look at Michelin Commanders next time.

I use the Elite tires and like them. I get 15,000 on the rear. Not sure how others are getting over 15,000 on a rear tire unless they are running the bike on a stand.....

I have used a couple of sets of American Elite tires

I like them a lot, one word of advise is stay on the tire pressure very close  :2vrolijk_21:

I check pressure every 500 miles. Going 25,000 a year so it's done very often.

At $300 for each tire seems they have the labor built in.

With tire pressure being so important in terms of MPG, wear, and safety; why is the tire pressure displayed in the smallest printing on the tire?  I always wondered about that when I was laying on the ground trying to see the recommended pressure for my vehicle tires.

The number on the sidewall of the tire is not the recommended inflation pressure, it is the maximum inflation pressure per the tire manufacturer.  Look at your owner's manual for the recommended inflation pressures, or on a car or truck it's usually on the certification label on the door jamb.  Much easier to read without lying on the ground too. ;)

15k on a rear tire??? I only got 10,010 on mine, and it looked like a racing slick. I do not smoke my tires, how did you get so many miles?

Thanks for all the responses.

I check tire pressure regularly - 36 front - 40 rear - 99% of riding is two up - not real aggressive but I don' baby it either - I run tires down to wear bars then replace - currently ready for 4th rear tire and 3rd front tire with right at 46,000 on bike.

Main reason for wanting to go to something different is price provide I can get an equally comparable tire.  I personally have had good results with the stock Dunlops except for minor cupping on one rear tire.

North Star - I believe you are correct they do not make an 18" tire - I have a 17" on the front on the Ultra

I ran 'em on my '09, and my '10 (non-cvo) with no problems. I like 'em.
Ran them on my old cvo again, no problems.
I like the stiffer sidewall vs. some other brands on the market. They have a nice bead also.
Mileage is average to me.
Had a blow out at 70 MPH 2-up and made the side of the road in one piece. That sets it for me!

I have D407's and got 15K on my rear.  Could have went more,  but I went on a 2k trip and wanted a new tire.

american elites ride better, are quieter, smoother over the rain grooves, great in the rain, and are cheaper than the 408/407 combination...seems pretty simple to me...I will definitely be buying another set for my bike
