Front Monotubes
« on: November 04, 2013, 11:13:17 AM »

Does anyone know how a -1 monotube will run in a 2012 Road Glide CVO with stock rears?  I may change rears later, but I want to try it with the monotubes first.

The stock rears are already 1" lower.  Personally, I would not give up the suspension travel and ground clearance.  There's not much suspension travel in the first place.  In fact, I'd keep the front end at full height (replacing the suspension components with something better, like Monotubes) and replace the rear shocks with 13" shocks instead of the 12" length that comes on the bike.  Scrape less hard parts in the curves that way.  Unless you NEED the bike 1" lower because you have a short inseam, there is only one other reason to lower the bike: Looks...or the perceived "cool" factor.  I'll choose function over form when it comes to handling and ground clearance every time.

Gerald,

Run the std. height in the progressive mono tubes, progressives std. height actually sits a 1/2" lower than HD OE due to sag setting they incorporate, plus there are spacers that come in the kit to drop slightly lower. I made the dreaded costly mistake on my '12 SESG by using the low profile monotubes, it slammed the front end,,,ended up doing the job twice... Night & day difference in the front end using the monotubes as far as ride & handeling.
Hope this helps.

x2. You always lose suspension travel (comfort) and ground clearance when you lower the bike (unless you use a height-adjustable suspension like Legends or Arnott).  You've stated previously you're not down for that.

Yes what I have learned so far is that the air ride systems are designed to carry a load of 200lbs or more or otherwise ride harsh.

I think at least from these threads and other threads I have researched it seems that the consenses is stock height monotubes work best.  So I plan to order a set today with some new sliders.  I though aboput doing the lowers too, but I think I like the chrome ones on the bike.  Really not sure how contrast cut lowers would look with contrast cut sliders....

If by air ride system you mean Legends, etc: That has not been my experience, nor have I heard or read that on this forum. I'm 180 pounds, and they ride fine for me.  You do have to find the sweet spot for your weight and that of a passenger and/or gear, but that applies to other shocks as well. Still, there are more-conventional shocks that ride better, so the main reason to get air ride is to slam the bike down for easier "walking" to park, etc.

OTOH, if you're referring to the Harley air-adjustable shocks, then you may be right.

If you do a search on "legends air suspension," you'll get several posts that discuss them; also, Midnight Rider has used them extensively and written about his experience.

Installed Kit # 31-2500 (Std Height) 4 spacers with kit, 2 a side....
i used 2 spacers, 1 a side which dropped an additional 1/4"
mated with 12" 444's in rear, bike sits proportionatly perfect  :2vrolijk_21:

Thanx - I think thats how I will do it as well

What weight oil is everyone using for monotubes, 20WT?

What parts will I need to get from Harley to perform the work.  Like seals, cause being in Germany I find it tough to always have a dealer who has the parts on hand.

Oh yeah are one of those syringes required to put the oil in?

The only purpose the oil serves with the monotubes is to lubricate the springs and any other moving parts.  It only takes 5 ounces in each leg, and the HD fork oil is fine.  I think they recommend 20wt. You can pour it in with a measuring cup, or you could use a syringe.  If I had the legs apart, I'd replace the bushings and the seals...especially the bushings, if they have many miles on them.  They have a teflon looking coating on them that wears pretty quickly.

I thought I used what was recommended. 10 weight fork oil. I just checked shed and have a bottle of bel-ray 10w in there. Maybe instructions say 10 to 20 weight. I don't have them anymore. But as already said its just to keep em wet no other purpose. I changed mine out with under 6k on the bike so that's all I changed, had I 10k or more I may have done what midnight mentioned. Also I used a pyrex measuring cup and poured in with that.

So I found this part number as a Kit, Fork Rebuild Kit ( 49377-09A ) is this what I will need to do the monotube installation?

If so does it take 2 kits or just 1?

I am getting ready to do the install and so i called Pregressive and they said. For me (175lbs), it might be best to run no spacers.  I have the non lowered monotubes, anyone else run theae with no spacers?  If so what did you think of the Ride?
