Title: 2013 CVO Road King or 2014 non CVO Limited??
Post by: d-roadglidr on August 25, 2013, 09:23:14 PM
I want a new bike and have narrowed it down to these two. I can get a good deal on the 2013, but kinda dig the new technology.

Which would you choose and why?

All technology aside, the one you look at and go WOW! That's the one that should be in the garage. JMO. :2vrolijk_21:

It would depend on how you are going to do most of your riding.  Road King for mostly around town when you can pull the windscreen off if you want and Limited for longer rides.  That's why I have one of each. The limited is a very nice bike.

I would make that decision on the equipment that the bikes come with and which bike is set up to suit your needs and uses best.  For me I need the equipment that the Limited has which the Road King (CVO or not) does not have.  Then add to that mix the upgrades that the '14 Limited has then its a no brainer to me.

Also by way of analogy, paying attention to looks (or the Wow factor) could cause one to chose the high maintenance hot chick who makes you miserable instead of the gal who is a better mate and companion.

Well the 13 CVO king is a very nice bike, I have one.  I just love it.  The ride and handling is no different than my CVO Road Glide.  I have rode the King to Key West from Knoxville area, and will be riding it to Milwaukee from Knoxville area on Wednesday this week.

The king in my opinion is far more versatile a bike.  Great for around town, and day trips.  Can be stripped down, no windshield and so on.  Can also have a bigger windshield put on for touring.

That said a Fairing offers more protection in bad weather be it a Bat Wing or Shark nose.  A tour pack makes for easier touring.  I however do not like them, so for my Road Glide I have a quick detach tour pack, only on the bike for trips longer than two nights.

You can add one to the road king, I choose to go with a Route 66 T-bag, and can carry lots in it and keep it dry, good for 10 days or so on the road.

The 2014 bikes are completely different bikes than the 13s.go with the limited. I have two road kings 2011 and 2013 CVO.

The 2014 will have way more resale/trade in value. You still need to get the one the feels the best.

It depends on what you really want, and what's going to make you happy.

The '13 SERK is absolutely beautiful, and I would love to own one. And, if you can get what you consider a good deal on one, that's awesome. It will turn heads, and it's a CVO with the 110 (that can be good or bad...). You can take the windshield off for bar hopping or around town, put a larger one on for touring, and add a Tour Pak if you want.

The '14 Limited is also beautiful, and I've posted elsewhere how much I like it. Amber Whiskey and Vivid Black would be my color. It's a TON of bike for the money, and would be hands down the ultimate bike for long hauls. You get all of the newest technology and improvements... CANBUS (finally!), new crank bearings, twin cooling (we'll see how we'll that works, but it will probably work fine), 10:1 CR, new steering head and forks, etc. you also get all of the new '14 creature comfort refinements... new audio system with GPS, new hand controls, new fairing with vent, new larger TP, new saddlebag lids, new seat, etc.

Honestly, as much as I love CVOs... if I were buying a new Harley I would get the '14 Limited. Then I'd add highway pegs, a Fullsac X-pipe, Rinehart 4" mufflers, and a TTS MasterTune... and ride the hell out of it!

You guys are all correct. The CVO is a true looker in my favorite color, blue. I could add a fairing and tour pack to it if needed. OR......go for the new and UNTESTED technology of the 2014.

Maybe split the difference and go to the 2014 Street Glide Special. Any, got a test ride scheduled for today. I'll know more this afternoon. Thanks for the help folks!

My Amber Whiskey SG Special should be at the dealer Thursday.  The dealer has to add the new Vance & Hines headers, Supertrapp mufflers, SE 255 cams, SE air cleaner and Super Tuner.  (Along with several other accessories).
I hope my wife will enjoy it.  It's actually for her.  :)

FLHRSE5, and I prefer the Annie.  Along with a (matching CVO-paint-sheme) Dragonfly fairing with built-in GPS and additional stereo and Sat Radio.

I might be biased, but I love the 13 RK. If I was riding two up though, the Limited is hard to beat.

Assuming price is no problem then begin by asking yourself what kind of riding you do, and what features are REALLY important to you.

1. Do you mostly ride two up?  If so that big back seat will please your BSR.
2. Do you intend to tour, REALLY tour, 1000 mile trips? The bigger bike is awfully nice on the road. Plus more power and better brakes.
3. Do you want tunes, with speakers not ear buds? Narrows it down further.
If you are 45 weeks a year in town, crusin' with your buds, and now and then taking a little jiggle, then a more agile bike might be a better choice.

I have owned several HD Touring models and now have a 2011 StreetGlide.  Not as good as the Ultras for two, but based on my riding preferences, perfect for me. I have also owned a RoadKing and absolutely loved it; big, fast, convertible wind solution, detachable tourpack. But no tunes, her butt got sore, more wind than a batwing (noticeable on a long trip).

You will modify anything you buy, everyone does, so give some thought to what "style" of riding you intend to do and pick the bike that best suits that style. AND one more thing, it IS important that you get a chubby going when you look at it in your garage.

The seat problem is fixed like this for long trips and it is even heated.. Then you can put the stock seat back on fro a hot rod look. With this LRS windshield I can hear the tunes fime even at 80 on the interstate. Then for the really long trips a detachable tour pack. I just ordered a swinebox today and had it shipped to Joe at Xtreme Dimension for the color matched paint. I am probably biased but to me I have a hot rod and a touring bike in one with the 13 CVO King.

I will be very interested to see the lines of the painted-to-match Swinebox on your beautiful '13 SERK! Looks like it's tailor-made to match the lines of the extended bags.  :2vrolijk_21:

Just traded my 2013 SERK on an 2014 Ultra Limited.  Less heat, buffeting more bells and whistles, holds way more luggage & stops faster.  Does not quite accelerate as fast.  Handling a toss up even with the increased weight of the limited.  Wow factor, love the new wheels, painted inner fairing and my color Dark gray & light silver.  Look at a new limited setting next to a cvo limited and ask yourself its how much more.

Thanks, T-Roy! I just spent the last two days riding the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, some of our beautiful North Georgia roads, and hanging out in Helen, GA today. Honey Badger badly needs a BATH! Rode about 600 miles over the last two days... "tuning up" for Maggie Valley!

I want a new bike and have narrowed it down to these two. I can get a good deal on the 2013, but kinda dig the new technology.

Which would you choose and why?

I have a '11 SERGU and I was on a long ride when my exhaust bolt to the front cylinder came loose. I found a close HD shop and while they were repairing my bike. I saw the '14 limited. I had the sales manager show me the updates. and all I can say is "Wow". The double DIN radio alone is awesome. GPS in screen. With a headset and VOX mic you can speak to GPS and radio. If you are using sirrius/XM and you say "country" the radio switches to that genera of music. If using GPS and you say "1234 Mains St, Milwaukee" GPS adds that location. huge amp included, 6 speakers, but two on saddle bag are hidden in back. All backs have single latch and close as smooth as a Mercedes door. Gauges are now in radio for dumb ones, oil pressure and air temp, so gauge cluster is neat. Radio is finally Bluetooth and can read your text messages from your phone and you can reply using VOX too. They added height to the front forks and made the rear seat wider and the tour pack sleeker without taking away any room. Water cooled engine had same rumble as all the other engines and radiators are almost invisible. From all of the HD guys I spoke to they stated when the front vent on the windshield is open, the air flow is non existent at your face, one guy said he wore a base ball hat forward and when he closed the vent (push button on fairing) the hat blew off. To change the odometer selections, the button is now on the left grip, so no more leaning forward and taking a hand off the bars.

I am waiting until '15 to see if the Road Glide is as cool and if they make a CVO with all of the upgrades.

I was seriously impressed and now a little depressed about not having this new technology!

I just took home a 14 non cvo limited, amber whiskey/black, love the ride.  I can easily flat foot on pavement where on my 08 SEUC I had to scoot up on the seat to plant both feet on the ground.  Sure not as many bells and whistles or power, but a much more smoother ride, and not $40K+.  I'm still learning the infotainment system, but am very satisfied with the bike!

Had 2 road kings before my ultra and got real tired of always switching things back and forth all the time. The I had to safely store store all the shiny stuff when it was off the bike.  No stereo, only one gauge, and no lowers on 99% of them. Go for the ultimate Harley the Ultra. Be done with it. Will get one any way sooner or later. We all do eventually, right!!

This would be an easy choice for me. I like Technology too. I have worked in the tech field for over 40 years. Get the 14 and the touchscreen. The controls are all by wire now and less wear and tear. I like the batwings myself over the sharks. Just my thoughts
