Title: 2018 SG CVO Heated Grips
Post by: Designflaw on August 06, 2018, 04:22:20 PM
There are a couple things on the 18 I like including the lower fairing speakers and the black heated grips. I can only find the foam HD heated grips in black. All the others like the airflow are chrome. Got on line with surdyke chat and they tell me they aren't available.

Anyone know what they are?

Oh, and I priced out all of the items it takes to get the lower speakers from HD, I think I'll spend a grand some place else. But if I can have the grips or the lower speakers its time to trade lol  :2vrolijk_21:

shew... Thanks that helped some. piecing it together gets it around 700.00 bucks. Guess I'll wait for the Kit which some how is only around 300.00 when they come out.

The two grips and two end caps in black come to about $528.  You won't need to buy a new throttle by wire sensor assembly since the same part number was used on your 2017 model.  The right hand grip just plugs into the existing sensor.  As for the Harley kits, they may never make a kit available with the exact same grips they used in production.  That has been the case on some older models.  If you really want those grips soon, you may have no choice but to buy the production parts.  Btw, there are more than a few SESG owners on the site who have purchased and installed production grips instead of one of the available kits, so you will have some experienced resource people available if you decide to use the production parts.  Fishing the wires for the left grip through the bars will probably be the hardest part of the process.

Thanks Jerry,  Looks like I might be able to a little better than that through board tracker but not sure it's even $500 important. I always wear gloves anyway I just thought it was a nice option.

If I do it I will definitely look for advice.

I had heated grips added to my 08/CVO out of the crate. Like yourselves I felt it was a cool addition despite the cost. But did I get laugh at and talked about. I let the dealer do the work, because it was a new bike. Earlier I had an 01Ultra and I added the grips myself. it was not hard to do and it worked well. The question is are they a waste of time? Would a good pair of gloves work as well? I live in Houston, Texas. For a southern bike in cold weather with sensitive sensive it made a difference. With a pair of hand glove liners and a thin set of winter gloves it makes a noticeable difference. I have not used the heat often on the 08 cruiser, but it is a talking piece with all the new gadgets on the newer bikes on the road today.

Heat Demon is a great option!  Keep your current grips, nice looking switch, much easier on the wallet.

I added the 17 CVO Limited heated grips to my 17 CVO Street glide.  I was glad I did, bike looked stock as they matched all the other stuff on the bike.  They worked great.

I did the same with my 13 CVO King, I have 13 CVO limited heated grips on it.

I replaced my heated grips with Heat Demons years ago much better and still work fine. Mine is an 07, and didn't the 08's come with heated grips?

Like Dave I added heated grips to my 17 CVO Streetglide as well as my 12 CVO Roadglide. Though not cheap I never regretted doing them and they work great when I need them.

Thanks guys. I like the grips on the 18, so that is why I was looking at them specifically for replacement. I have the same on the 17 but chrome centers and not heated, so it makes since if I want the black to go with the CVO grips but that's some bucks for something I may use. I'm going to change my grips because I want the black its just a matter of if it is the heated or not. I'm blacking out bike slowly lol. Something to drink and ponder on for a bit  :drink:

Check out a grip heater called Heat Demons.  They work well and have proved to be very reliable for many here.  They install inside the bar itself and radiate heat out through the grip.  So you can use whatever grip you wish.  The heater and grip are physically separate items.  It's also a much less expensive option.

I put the all black Kahuna heated grips on my 2018 CVO RG.  I like them.

According to Harley those are a no go on our CVO's. Says they would have to be wired externally. Can you enlighten us CJ?  Walk us through the process, anything to watch out for? Is the HD logo orange?

TIA

I am putting them on my 19 RG. They say they don't fit CVO's because CVO's are internally wired. You (or whoever) just has to internally run the wires. Bad news is since they are not supposed to fit a CVO, they will not be covered be the full 2 yr warranty even if you do it at time of delivery. Was the same when I did same thing to my 17 SG

You just have to pull the wires through the bars.  Best to take off the connectors.  I run a length of weed eater filament through the bars then tape the wire to it and pull them through.  It is better to push the wire and pull it along with the filament.  I use the .090 size.

I am have an issue with mine now.  They get warm, but not hot.  On the second pair.  Seems to be a wiring issue and there may be a reason that on the package it says "not for CVO's."  I will keep you posted.  See my post:

Can’t speak to 19’s, but have put heated grips on the 04, 11, and 13 all which said the same thing about not CVO’s.   Can’t turn any of them past 2-3 they will burn your hands.   Might just be your riostat.

On the 04 first set did the same thing swapped em out and been good ever since.   04 version didn’t plug and play needed clearancing, the newer had no issues

What '15 do you have Harry? Not sure I've seen that one. Or is that your spare you keep in the mobile garage?

fos41, Did they internally wire the grips? Can you post a pic? Dealer says they cant add heated grips to the SG, I had some installed on my original SG but the wires were external which I cant stand as it comes out where my thumb rests.

Best suggestion would be to find a better dealership.  People have been doing this successfully for many years, but it does require a tiny bit of mechanical and electrical talent which obviously some places don't have.  Or are you talking to the wrong person at that dealership, like a parts guy who is just telling you what the MoCo says in the catalog?  Find the actual tech who would be assigned to do the work and ask him.  Are you looking at buying the production parts from the parts catalog for a bike that does come with heated grips stock, like a CVO LTD, or are you trying to use one of the kits Harley sells in the accessory catalog?

The attachment is a copy of the parts list of the 2018 CVO SG showing the fairing wiring harness.  Note where my arrow shows the harness comes with the same connection for the grips that comes on the CVO LTD.

I put them on my 2017 SG myself. Not hard. Just takes a little mechanical aptitude. My dealer told me what mod to do. The throttle side already has the connector in it, all you need is a dremel tool and patience. Took me under 3 hours, 2 beers, and 1 quesadilla.

I didn't like the stock heated grips that came on the 16 cvo rg ultra. I ordered the stock heated grips from the 14 cvo limited. Works perfectly. Looks great and don't peel.  Very happy.  Stuart.  :2vrolijk_21:
