Caliper insert
« on: September 24, 2012, 03:26:01 PM »

I noticed this morning that over the weekend I lost the right front caliper insert.

I went to the dealership and they say p/n 44477-99.  That cover fits the non-CVO caliper.

Any idea what p/n I need?

Here is a pic, it looks like the insert stayed on and the black & chrome "foil" came off.

The parts list I looked at also shows 44477-99 as the part number for the 2005, 2006 and 2007 CVO eglides, and it's a plain chrome insert (no black lettering).  The standard Electraglides use part number 44338-00 and it costs half as much.  Did the dealership have the 44477-99 in stock so you could eyeball it?

Your picture didn't look quite right to me so I went out and looked at my '05 for comparison.  My 44477-99 insert is rounded on the ends and is plain chrome, no lettering.  So I'm confused.  I guess we need someone with an '06 CUSE to post a picture of what his looks like.  Are you sure that's a stock caliper?  It sure looks like the chromed caliper Harley sold in the catalog back then, and that's not what came standard on the bike.

Thats the caliper I have.

The insert is p/n 44932-05.  Harley says obsolete and no dealer has one.

Bummer.

I guess my choices are to leave it as is, look for a correct set of chrome 06 calipers or upgrade to Brembos.

If I upgrade to Brembos do I have to change the master cylinder and brake lines?

I have a set of polished 11.8 rotors.

If I have to change the master cylinder then I would also have to change the clutch reservoir so they match.

I really dont want to go to all that trouble if I can keep what I have.

Have done this a few times.  At a minimum you have to change the rotors and calipers.  You also have to cut the "stand" or finger off the top of the left caliper adjacent to where the brake line attaches.  The stock brake line won't attach with it still there.  You'll also need the combination bleeder and banjo bolts that go with the Brembo calipers.

You don't have to change the master cylinder.  Have done it both ways.  I think the feel or feedback in the handgrip is better with the newer master cylinder.  But either will drive the calipers.

Hey BMCGC - I think these will work if you're into skulls. Apparently HD offered several different inserts for your style caliper. This is the only pair I could find on Ebay so you could replace your existing and the missing one. Unfortunately, there were none identical to yours.  Here ya' go:

Darn it! Looks like you need a separate insert for left and right - two different p/n's (see pic of instruction sheet one one of the eBay postings...you can hardly read it, but it looks like each insert design is listed left and right). Let me search a little more. PJ

Ta Dah! - here's a skull design insert for the opposite side - also on eBay. If you're into skulls, you're good to go. At worst, you could install these until the ones you want come along...in any event this option is far cheaper than new calipers! I see there are a few flame design inserts on eBay, but for only the left side.  Here ya' go again:
