Rolling Thunder | Jock Goes to Washington
« on: May 29, 2018, 08:10:13 PM »

For many Memorial Day will be just another holiday from work, cooking outside with some friends, enjoying an adult beverage or two and bitching about the inconvenience of the day.  I have certainly been guilty of that position in my lifetime but this would be another year away from that former position.

I reminded myself of the purpose behind this day and what it means to me.  I like many of you, have had loved ones give their lives to service in one form or another.  I am eternally grateful for this sacrifice and blessed as a result of it.

Recently I conducted a conversation with a POW of the Vietnam War and this was not the first time we conversed about his experience.  However it was the first time I had heard very inmate details of what I would never forgot.

This got me to thinking of an event I had attended before many moons ago.  Rolling Thunder®.  After a brief thought I made the commitment to return to this event for Memorial Day.  I am confident this will be a befitting action on such a day.

Now I must tell you that with all this discussion regarding boarders I am uncertain what all the fuss is about.  Besides the dogs being better than bikes I am not certain I understand.

Having made the commitment I decided to make another commitment.  Along my journey I would reach out to one of the Maggie Valley Krewe spydglide.  It has been a while since I had laid eyeballs on him and missed our gatherings together.  He agreed to meet me and we reminisced about a number of events. Laughed so hard I got a headache.

During our time together I informed him of the primary purpose of my journey.  He reminded me that he too was a veteran and shared his experience.  I am so thankful for folks like him and he is now added to the list of folks I am riding for this year.

Thanks for the time spyder and I trust you will consider returning to the Valley this year!

I have traveled by the National Museum of the Marine Corps for many years but never had the time to stop.  Today would change that position!

A very befitting way to start my experience and trip would be here.  Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel.

As you enter into the Chapel you will find Core Values that any person should live by but for Marines this becomes their way of life!  A lesson to be learned here for sure!  American!  Are you listening?

As you walk down to the Museum you will find the walk engraved with the listings of some of the many campaigns the Marines have encountered.

The National Museum of the Marine Corps is a lasting tribute to U.S. Marines--past, present, and future. Situated on a 135-acre site adjacent to Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, and under the command of Marine Corps University, the Museum's soaring design evokes the image of the flag-raisers of Iwo Jima and beckons visitors to this 120,000-square-foot structure.

All Marines remember their drill instructor (DI).  In “Making Marines,” visitors step inside the process used by drill instructors to transform young men and women into Marines.
