Newbie has CVO exhaust question
« on: February 27, 2007, 04:48:04 PM »

I have been referred to this site from HDForums.com.

Wealth of information, but I need some clarification.

Here is my question.  I have a '99 FLHR.  I was able to pick up some brand new '06 CVO pipes at the dealer for next to nothing and am considering putting them on my Stage 1, 88" TC.  Here are the part numbers 65913-06 and 66080-06 and they came off a 103" CVO Ultra.  I would be replacing my one-peice SE mufflers which are too loud and tinny for my taste.  I am looking for a quieter, yet HD sounding bike, yet not diminishing the performance.  I ride 2-up a lot.

If I understand this correctly, the left side of these mufflers has a cat in it and the right side does not.  They are stock pipes, but from a larger motor.  So here are my questions:

Will these muffles flow free-er than regular stock 88" FLHR mufflers?

Could you use the "non-cat" right side muffler on the left side?  Would this be a good idea?

Any of you with these mufflers care to render your opinion on sound?

Thanks from a CVO wannabe.

Welcome to the site, first of all!  I have an 06 CVO Ultra...those muffs are VERY quiet, in my opinion.  Too quiet...and that's on a 103" motor which "kicks" a bit harder than the 88", so they will be even quieter on it.  You might get Fulsac to do a conversion on them to open them up a bit, and they would probably sound pretty good.  Are you running stock headpipes?  If you want an extra pair to send off to Fulsac and have modified, I've got a totally unused pair in a box...

Thanks for the response.

Yes, I am running stock head pipes.

Not good on the quiet part.  I will check out Fulsac as an option, I have their link.

See if you can find a set of Screamin Eagle 65115-98B mufflers from Chicago H-D or some other I-NET sales dealership. In my opinion, you'll love the sound and they perform well. The mufflers that come stock on CVO bikes are not really performance mufflers. And welcome to the site. You don't have to own a CVO to be here.

Thanks Spiderman,

Someone from another site is telling me that the cats are removeable.  I figured I would have heard that from you guys if it was a possiblity.

Any truth to this?

Ive seen a number of CVO pipes with the Cats removed, they are about 3 1/2 in thick and very restrictive, removal supposedly  frees up the exhaust, I saw them at a swap meet, in Grand Rapids mi, If I remember correctly the charge was about $50.00, So yes they are removable, wish I had paid more attention but the inlet was clear straight into the baffle.

 65913-06A            MUFFLER, LHW/CAT, CHRM

All of the CVO Baggers 06 and 07 have cats in both pipes, not sure about Ca approvel but I  think the

bikes shipped to CA use the identical mufflers.

Yes, cats on both mufflers.  They are very restrictive and would make you wonder how the bike could breathe at all.  I talked to one company that modifies stock mufflers and was told these are very difficult to modify and the sound when done is less than desireable.

This has also been discuss on a previous post somewhere on this site.  Best suggestion I can give you is take them back to the dealer and get your money back.  Then go out and buy a good set of slip-ons.  I would suggest starting out looking at the Vance & Hines Ovals.  Not overly loud and have a nice sound.

You spent over $30,000 on your bike.  Why try and save a few hundred bucks now??  :)

Hey Dartman,

Do you have any idea if they removed them from the inlet, or if they had to drill out the welds at the back end and pull out the baffles?

If I remember correctly there was a perfect tunnel from the inlet to the beginning of the baffle, I suspect a core drill, probably only a 10 min job.

Thanks,

Now I just need to find a core drill that will handle the 3.5 inch thickness of the cat.  Should be easy with the drill press.

Pumba I just took some measurements, the inside diameter of the bushing inside the inlet would accommodate a 1.6 Core drill I have seen them 12 to 14 in in length which would cut a perfect hole using the inlet tube for alignment.

Great thanks.  However, where would I find one?  Not Home Depot?

180090548038   check this number on E-Bay its basically what your seeking although the diameter is a little to large, if you can contact the Co maybe they can furnish the correct size, The diamond tipped ones cut through reinforced concrete so the CAT should not be a problem.

TC, You have me thinking, What would it take to get your pipes into my shop?

PM me with what you think they're worth...they've never been run on the bike.
