Strictly for looks. And for all the "metal polish" companies to make more profit.

It's also a safety measure....the more chrome on your scooter the more it will reflect light and others will notice you sooner.

Take care Tommyo  8-)

tommyo,

The chrome backplate is MUCH better looking than the regular plate, and will not develop the white aluminum corrosion that you will eventually get with the regular plate.  Of course, the chrome version also has a smoother finish, so anyone wishing to justify it as a performance mod could conceivably make a case for slightly higher flow (how's that, 'd00d?).

Seriously, if you have the silver engine, the standard SE backplate is pretty close in appearance to the heads and therefore doesn't look bad.  However, if you have the black engine, the chrome piece makes a big difference in appearance.  Look at a '07 SERK, which has the chrome plate, and you'll see what I mean.  If you're starting from scratch and buy the parts individually, you can actually buy an air cleaner that is better than the SE kit, with the chrome backplate and genuine K&N filter, for less than what H-D charges for the kit with the "el crappo" filter element they currently use.  Check out the "Roll Your Own SE Air Cleaner" thread in the Twin Cam section.

TommyO you will only see the the portion that attaches to the heads but on the black engine its sharp as others have said.  I highly recommend it and if you do a search for the roll your own air cleaner kit its what I have done again on the new bike.  That way you dont get stuck paying for the cheesy Harley piece of chit air cleaner they want to sell you.   You can then go buy a good one from K&N / Zippers (made by K&N) /or the Ness one made by K&N.  I think its the K&N number 800 for the Screaming Chicken bikes.

Hey Grover I thought it was for the OCD Fix, but I like your rational a lot more.

Arlen Ness Big Sucker air filter kit....great set up.  No hoses as the breather passages are drilled and shoot into the injector/carb mouth....simple and functional.

Model Number 18-505 at Eastern Performance $99.95:

The Chrome setup Model Number 18-507 is $10.00 more...which is what I have.

What I have wondering throughout this whole thread is how can a member of this distinguished group use the two words "CHROME"  and  "WHY" in the same sentence??? [smiley=wink.gif]

Some things require no answer...Or have none.

Hey Dood, doesn't that chrome back plate qualify as "STEALTH CHROME" that's why I bought mine that way [smiley=banana.gif] [smiley=jalapeno.gif] [smiley=banana.gif] [smiley=jalapeno.gif]

Just had to buy one. I changed my ac cover to the tear drop type (like the 03 SED). Once finished the dull plate looked like hell and quite a lot of the front was visible. I ran up to the dealer grabbed the chrome backplate and wha-lah, looks perfect! Not just OCD if it can be seen. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
had I not changed covers I would never have considered buying it.
