Make sure there's not a chunk of wax or something in an ear...  If head shaking like that isn't normal - something brought it on...  My parents had a lab that sprung a leak in his ear flap...  The vet eventually had to cauterize it to get it to stop.

Thanks for the advice. I will ask the vet tomorrow if there's a reason Mickey is shaking his head so much.

Mickey the wonder dog has a very swollen tip of one ear. He yelps when you do a nything more than just very very gently touch it. We called the vet and they said it's probably a hematoma and they'll have to lance the ear to drain the blood. It's caused by him shaking his head excessively which is a habit he's developed of late. Evidently when he shakes his head, the ends of his ears snap and it breaks blood vessels because of his age (13) Have any of you had this happen with your dogs ? If so, what did you do. I mean ok, so the vet lances it and drains it tomorrow, then what ? Just worried about my best buddy is all. I can't bear to see him in any discomfort at all. I'd rather it'd be me.

Brian, this happened to our black lab. his ear is going to look ugly depending on how big, and guess what Mickey the wonder dog gets a lamp shade to wear. Looks like this month it is the CVO attire for dogs. Might want to decorate it for him ie.. stickers, pictures  ;D

I've heard a soft bath towel folded and wrapped loosely around the dog's neck serves the same purpose as the lampshade without the amusing for humans but not for the dog side effects of the lampshade. Thankfully Alexandra got home from school last night after a day's travel from Columbia in NYC. She worked in a pet shop all through HS and is great at dealing with playing nurse to Mickey than the rest of us. I can't stand to seem him suffer. As I said, I'd sooner take the knife in the ear myself sans novacaine than subject him to it.

He's fine. They lanced his ear, drained the fluid, put in a temporary shunt and wrapped his head in bandages. I'd post a picture but I feel so bad for the little guy I don't want to laugh at his expense. He looks like Marley's Ghost from Scrouge. Anyway, no ear infection, mites or anything. He just feels like shaking his head every so often and with the dalmation ears, the tips are like whips. Hopefully this isn't the beginning of an expensive habit. Today's visit was $200. Hell that's more than the co-pay for my last A-Fib episode. LOL

Expecting company Henry?

Nah.......but I'm ready if they decide to drop by.  That's the overflow from the stuff still coming in.  There's more.

Of course, there's plenty of beer too.

Just depends on what sort of "company" that drops by as which method of greeting we'll use.

No chit.........get your ammo now.........while you still can!
