Last week at the CVO event in West Virginia I ended up missing most of the Saturday night dinner because our parrot was having an issue. We were in the campground across from the hotel.
Anyway, no avian vets in the area and he turned around and seemed to be OK.
Thursday he started to act up again and by the time we could find an avian vet it was Friday afternoon. The vet took some blood for a quick test and told me "your bird is critical and needs a blood transfusion".

I don't know what the count actually means but he said it was a 10 and should be around 50, and on a scale of 1-10 our bird was a 9.5, for being ill!
Made the arrangements to try and locate a donor bird and wrote the all important check for services to start.

Less then a half hour after I left he passed away.

Cagney was just over 13 years old and we have had him since 16 weeks.
With our cats and dogs we always realize the mortality of them, figuring if they made 10 years, every year after that was a bonus to treasure.

With Blue & Gold macaws you typically have to make arrangements for them after YOU pass on, as they can easily live to be well over 70 years old.
He was very much a part of our family and quite the character.
He, as well as the dogs was the reason we ended up RV'ing, so we could take them with us when we went away.

In hindsight, we missed some important clues with his health and I don't know if it would have helped, but finding an avian vet a day sooner might have made the difference.

This coming weekend will be our annual trip to Goldstock, a Golden Retriever rescue event. Cagney has always been the hit at camp with the children, even the adults who wonder about bring a bird to an event with 400 “bird dogs”.
It will be a long 5 days.

Duane,
We are deeply saddened by your news of Cagney.  It certainly sounds like you did everything that could be done.  Anyone that knows you, knows that you did.  We know how much you guys will miss him and things will not be the same without him.  Best of luck with the upcoming "Goldstock".  We admire you for your efforts in such a worthy cause!

I spent most of the summer puppy sitting for my Grandsons little boy.
He is living up in Columbia, SC now. Hate to say it, but I miss the little booger.
His Name is Titan and he is now 4 months old.

Duane, don't beat yourself up too much.  The number the vet was referring to is the hematocrit.  It's the percentage of the blood that is red blood cells.  It's around 50% for people. The other 50% being plasma.  A transfusion would have helped but certainly wouldn't cure the problem that caused Cagney's critical anemia.  It's too bad that had to happen away from home.

Sorry to hear of your loss. It doesn't matter what kind of pet when they are part of your life it is so hard to lose them. At least you will have good memories about Cagney the rest of your life.

So sorry to hear of your loss Duane...

Bogart the Wonder Dog is going in for a major surgery Sept. 13th to have his spleen removed, it has a mass in it. We found out Friday night after taking him to the emergency clinic when he started crying, shaking and barely being able to walk. Poor thing has arthritis in his back and inflamed it by bouncing around on the hardwood floors right after I got home. I had my lunch pail and mail in my hands, so I couldn't pick him up right away. He bounced up one time and fell over backwards. He seemed perfectly fine afterwards, continuing to be playful. I took him for a walk, put him back inside and decided to take a quick ride. The wife called me twenty minutes after I left and described his plight. I met her at the clinic and that is when we found all this out. The ultrasound doesn't show any issues other than the mass, so we are very hopeful that it is not cancer...
