One of my favorite pictures of our Misty we lost in September. When looking for a picture I decided I would post this on the CVO Pet site and tell her story. Completely forgetting I had already done that.

That perfectly ok Duane sometimes you have to repeat yourself to get the attention of the ones that missed the first go around! What a beautiful girl she was and I'm sure she meant the world to you!

Dave and JC -ain't that the truth - forgetting that is  8)
Deb's email and screen name since almost the beginning of email for her is "IForget"  :nixweiss:

Dave that picture was taking 5 days before we lost her to lung cancer. Would never know she was suffering looking at the pic though.
And Molly, who was always a bundle of happiness, has had that sad look now for 3 months  (2nd pic). The two were inseparable, even though they tried to take each other out early on.

I'm firmly convinced that dogs grieve...when I had the Greyhound rescue (Shug) he and my Austrailian Terrier, Nell, were big buddies.  When she died, he got a mysterious illness and I ended up losing him 3 months later.  A team of vets never found out exactly what was wrong with him, and we tried everything short of exploratory surgery.  I think a broken heart played a part in it...

If anyone here lives in an area of the country where they race Greyhounds, I would strongly encourage you to adopt from the track...many of the dogs retire from racing at about 4 years old, and some of them just don't care for racing, so you can get one about 2 years old...all the shots, spayed/neutered, teeth cleaned, special collar.  People think they would be "hyper" because of what they are bred to do, but nothing could be further from the truth.  They are probably the sweetest, most intelligent, and sensitive breeds I've ever been around...plus, they are absolute couch potatoes.  Clean like a cat too.  Very well behaved...the local track does a fantastic job of screening the dogs based on personality traits, so they fit in homes either alone, with other dogs, or even with cats.  Shug would fly around out in the backyard for about 3 minutes each day, then spend the remainder of the day literally on the couch.  For a large breed, they are very graceful and know where their body is in space, so don't knock things off tables, etc.  Very well mannered.  Crate trained as well.

Terry, I have no doubt animals, and especially dogs can grieve over the loss of a companion.
We lost Misty the day before we were to head up to NY for the 9-11 10th Anniversary Tribute Rally in Newburgh (OCC headquarters). Being the "1st District" director put me in kind of a bind. No way were we going to leave my girl after she just lost her best friend for a long weekend, but I had some commitments.

I got permission and we brought our RV to the rally. How "red neckish" is that? I had my Toy Hauler parked in the Hilton parking lot! And at no charge to boot.

Anyway, I made up this picture and note you see below to further our cause for rescue. We could not walk 10 feet anywhere that weekend with Molly without having people come up to her and ask why she looked so sad.

Saturday afternoon while relaxing and taking a brew break, Molly got up, walked over to the picture, sat and looked at it for a moment. She then cranked her head around looked at me and I swear she had tears. About broke my heart to see her like that.

For the past 3 months just the mention of Misty would have her get that depressed look.

Try writing about it - and Misty was Deb's heart dog not mine!

It is all good though. She was GReat dog, who had a few issues, but GReat just the same. And because of her, we got involved in rescue. That can be both heart breaking and rewarding at the same time.

Harley would have been to easy a name so I named him Scooter. He is now 5 month old Yorkie that LOVES to ride almost as much as Momma and I. I should have called him Magnet cause he's a chick magnet. Big hit at bike night. Scooter's big brother is a 10 year old Yorkie named Petey, but Petey does not ride.
