To Paint or Not To Paint. That is the Question......
« on: November 06, 2007, 02:30:00 PM »

Due to a recent turn of events, my bike is in need of a good bit of cosmetic work. Pretty much every painted part excluding rear fender, side covers, one saddlebag bottom and the opposite saddlebag cover needs to be replaced.

So here's the deal. Should I take the insurance money, replace everything with factory painted parts or go for a totally custom paint job? It is a question of value. Which will be worth more in 2015?

Let the discussion begin.

IMO, stock CVO paint will be worth more in the long run...it's what makes it a CVO.

I was telling Chief that not to long ago I saw a picture of a Road Glide that had a 'checkered flag' painted front fender. Does anyone know where on the site that picture was? TIA

Alright Chuck you know good and well you can't come in here dropping a bomb like that w/o an explanation.

First off are you alright?

Second the rest of the story?

As for your bike I've always felt that CVO tins (paint) hold more value then a custom paint job. Nothing against a custom paint job, but I think the complete package of the CVO including paint is what makes it a CVO.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

Then the real question is in seven or eight years, how much more is a CVO in stock paint worth compared to a CVO with custom paint? Especially the paint design of the 2007s which we all know isn't anything really to get excited about.

Chuck,

You already know the answer, but, I'll entertain ya.

Put it back as it was before with Harley parts.

OK, an explanation is in order. I was out Saturday scouting for the scouting weekend. I goofed. I blew a corner and drove off onto the shoulder. The bike went down on the left side and then decided there were more shiny parts on the right side as-of-yet untouched, so it hooked the engine guard and popped over to get everything on the right side.

I didn't get a scratch. I got the bike up and rode it home from NC. It runs fine and just needs lots of painted parts. It's going to the dealer today for the estimate to be done. My tally puts parts (retail) at about $5,500.

In summary, going down suks, but if it's gonna happen to anyone I only hope it goes much like it did for me.

Glad to hear you are alright, and sorry to hear about the bike. Not to worry though either way it can be repaired stock or custom. :2vrolijk_21:

Chuck,
Glad to hear that you're okay...the bike can be fixed and made to look new again...it's a little more difficult with us skin and bone folks.  As far as custom or stock....even though it may take you longer to get the CVO tins from the MoCo, then to get primed tins and then get a custom job, I'd go with the CVO "stock" paint job.  Reason is, if you get a custom paint job, now what you have is an 07 Ultra with a custom paint job, and just a little round thingy on your leather tour pak to say it's a CVO, but if you get the "stock" tins again, you still have a complete factory-looking CVO.  Plus now you have the chance to see the error of your ways and get the "right" '07 CVO color.  :P  (I wonder what that might be?  ::) ) I'd wait the extra time and get the CVO tins...but that's just me. ;)
Cheers :2vrolijk_21:,
