ITCHY HEAD UNDER HELMET
« on: August 06, 2007, 01:26:48 PM »

My wife wears a cotton headrag under her half-helmet. After a few hours of riding, her head starts to itch to the point of major discomfort. If she doesn't wear the headrag when we start out, she'll still get itchyscalp, or even if she removes the headrag, the itchiness remains. Whether she shampoos or doesn't shampoo before a ride makes no difference.
She can't be the only one this happens to. What's the best way to avoid itchy scalp under a helmet?  Any good suggestions?

Helmet with AC (sorry), good air vents, or a bandanna that wicks works the best for me. Only happens to me when it is HOT outside. If I leave it alone it does not get worse, but once I start it never ends till I get the helmet off. Sometimes while riding I undo my helmet to let more air in But you have to hang on to it real good or it flies off. ;D No comments from the peanut gallery about that one.

Although its not very 'biker cool', Sliks makes some nice satin lined helmet liners that help improve comfort and reduce helmet hair. They're not too expensive and available at many bike shops.

Schampa makes them with a material that wicks better than cool max and they are reasonable   I just picked one up for $11. Fits great , keeps the hair in place and is much more comfy than a bandana.

I was in the UnderArmour outlet store over the weekend and noticed they had skull caps for sale, their stuff does a great job of wicking moisture.

I forgot about those. All of the motor officers on our Ride to the Wall this year were wearing the UA skull caps. They said they really liked them a lot.

That one looks like the one our local HD shop carries but the brand is Buff, www.buff.us works good.

I'm with the chicken lady...   ;)  I just tip my lid all the way back for a mile or two and let things air out...
The wife, on the other hand,  wears the microfiber doo-rag, and that kinda works...  the other thing is, she is real particular about making sure her braid is nice and tight so the hair doesn't migrate around, and that seems to help more than anything else...   (doesnt help me a damned bit, but it works for her!  ) 8)
