riding suit
« on: October 29, 2007, 08:23:01 AM »

My wife and I just moved to Johnson City TN form Tampa FL. Well It was cooler than we thought on Sunday morning for my wife.

I was talking to a guy and wears a suit most of the winter. Rain/warm riding gear. We are not sure what is good or bad about these. Also were to buy?

The name that immediately comes to mind for riding suites is Aerostitch. They're very good, but that comes with a steep price.

No respectable BMW rider would be caught dead without one. Nuff said.

There's a bunch of directions to go for a cold weather riding suit that is windproof/waterproof/water resistant.  It's really about how much money you want to spend.  One of the best options from Harley is their FXRG line of leathers.  Pants have a breatheable waterproof liner, good leather outer, flexible armor.  Jacket has a primaloft type liner that can be worn independently, or under the leather jacket.  If the leather is treated with a good dressing, it will be waterproof in all but a toad strangler.

Another viable option is a really good set of snow skiing bibs and jacket.  Most of the better versions are constructed of a Gore Tex shell, with plenty of insulation.  Spyder is an excellent brand, but expect to get off your hip to pay for it.  There are other good brands as well...check out a local ski shop.

Good leathers, if treated with good leather oil/paste will keep you amazingly warm with some 100 wt fleece long johns, or "expedition" weight long johns, and will keep you dry in most rains you'll run through.  Throw on a windblocker fleece jacket under the leather jacket and you'll be good in all but extreme temps.  If it's 35 and raining, I stay home... ;) ;D

The stuff Chief mentions is also great gear, but you'd look like a beemer rider  :huepfenlol2: ;)

Colombia Sports wear is some good stuff...A snowmobile suit (no kidding)  or ski bibs work nicely.  I gave mine away when I moved to WPB, Fl., 20 years ago...

Exactly...

The center stand is pretty cool....I'd need it with that tall bike.  My short a$$ would have a hard time with the seat height on a Beemer, but I was in that dealership the other day just checking out the new Ducati bikes, and you can get a hell of a lot of bike for 23K with the BMW LT...I'd do that one before I'd do a Wing, I think.  But, my 08 SEUC will be with me for a long, long time...and I like leather better.... ;) ;D 8)

Oh no, d00d...got all the bikes in the stable I want right now, but I don't rule anything out for the future.  I do enjoy going and looking at all the different new models out though, no matter the brand, and we were in there looking for something to keep Diva warm in Georgia.  Besides, I'd look at the GT...156HP right out of the box in a Sport Touring bike ain't bad for under 20K.

Ducati has their racing bike made street legal...from what the guy in the shop told me, it's just plain scarey fast, but it's about 34K and you have to get on a list.

That's why we were trying to find some for Suzanne on Ebay!!  Stuff is real pricey!!  We did get the pants from a 20% dealer (hurray Jenni), so they are on the way.

I'll make do with long johns, jeans, and my Fox Creek jacket and chaps.  I do have some leather overpants ordered from Fox Creek, but they will not be here for a month or so.  The FXRG stuff is the only thing I've seen that even comes close to the quality of Fox Creek leather, and even it is not as thick as the FC stuff.

The Aerostitch suit has been around for about 20 years and is a real favorite in the sport touring crowd.  Personally I use a set of Fox Creek leathers and Columbia long johns, whith the heated seat and grips I'm good down below freezing.  I've also doned my Ski warmups which zip eazily over my jeans and my Columbia ski jacket .. Toasty and warm

SV...if you are not vertically challenged, like me, the pants will work fine.  I'm 5'8", with a 29" inseam and normally wear a 34 or 35 inch waist.  I tried on a pair of the leather FXRG pants the other day and the 34" waist just fit over jeans, and the 36" waist fit over, but was just a little loose.  I would prefer not wearing them over jeans, but rather over some fleece pants or heavy duty polyprop long johns, so the 34" waist would have been fine (they seem to run just a tad large).  Problem for me was the length...only come in one length, and that is WAY too long for me.  The knee was down below my kneecap, placing the flexible armor on my chin... :-[ :-[.  If you're 5'10" or better, or have at least a 32" inseam, order waist size.  The bottom of most leathers have to be cut off anyway, and these are no exception, unless you're well over 6 feet tall.

They are very nice pants!!

Jeff...consider ordering them through Jenni at Charlie's HD in WV.  Close to your home, and they will get them for you 20% off.  If they don't fit, you're only out a little shipping, and Jenni will work with you to get the right size.  Give her a call...she's in parts.  She also does not charge an arm and leg for shipping.  Unless of course, you can get them locally.  Johnson City, huh...Diva's sister lives there....nice part of the country.

I will call her and order them. Maybe it will nice ride up and get them. I might have to wear them back!!

We lucked out on ebay and found a FXRG leather jacket.   :2vrolijk_21: Can't wait to wear it this weekend in GA.   :apple:   I would have never paid full price (over $500) for the jacket.  Got to love ebay!   :)   I wasn't so fortunate to find pants on ebay but the 20% discount from Jenni sure helped.   :2vrolijk_21:

Hi Jeff

Tampa to Johnson City ... what a wise move.   :2vrolijk_21:   My daughter lives in Tampa ... hates it, and my sister lives in Tri-Cities, Bristol area, her son and family live in Johnson City near the University ... love it.   :)   They've lived in the Tri-Cities area for many years.  She sells real estate and sells to a lot of folks from North and South.

This weekend I'll be wearing my new FXRG jacket (bought on ebay, or should I say "stole" it) and my FXRG pants that I bought from Jenni at 20% off.   :2vrolijk_21:

When we ride to Johnson City we must all plan to get together.

Happy and Safe Trails,

Suzanne

Happy and Safe Trails, I use the FXRG jacket , Custom Hand made leathers From Kelly's and Gerbing G3 gloves socks and liner. Is only one layer and you can drive anywhere you want with out filling up your bags with mutilayers. Cant/ beat the system . Just dial in with the dual controller and you are riding like it is summer. My wife swears by it.  No neeed to watch the weather any more. Just get up on go Billy
