Bruce Rossmeyer Killed
« Reply #1 on: July 30, 2009, 05:52:52 PM »

PORT ORANGE -- Bruce Rossmeyer, owner of Daytona Beach Harley-Davidson – one of the nation’s largest Harley-Davidson dealers – died today in a motorcycle accident in Wyoming.

Rossmeyer
A family friend said Rossmeyer was riding with several motorcyclists when they pulled out to pass a recreational vehicle. Rossmeyer was the last in line and was killed when the RV strayed into his lane, hitting his motorcycle, according to the friend who didn’t want to be named.

Rossmeyer also is the developer of Destination Daytona and co-owner of two area auto dealerships.

More details will be provided as they become available

Any loss of life is a horrible thing, to loose your life while riding hits our community very hard.

Sorry for the family and friends.

"Published by Cyril Huze July 30th, 2009  in Editorial.

brucerossmeyerJuly 30, 09, 3.00 pm EST. It’s with infinite sadness that I inform all of you that Bruce Rossmeyer was killed this morning around 11.15 am, local hour, near Rock Springs, Wyoming while riding his motorcycle with a group of 5 friends. The group was riding from Denver, CO to join this afternoon the yearly Hamster’s ride to Sturgis. Although the details of the accident are still sketchy, his riding friends tell me that Bruce Rossmeyer was the last of the group to pass a RV when this same RV went left in his lane.

Rossmeyer, a long-time Daytona Beach resident, was “retired” from the automobile business when he purchased in January 1994 his first Harley-Davidson dealership in Daytona Beach, Florida. It’s when I met him, his wife and children for the first time. Bruce wanted to do something fun in his retirement and we all know how hugely successful he became in the motorcycle business. Then, he followed with the addition of New Smyrna Harley-Davidson in 1997, Grand Junction Harley-Davidson in 1997, Ft. Lauderdale Harley-Davidson in 1998, Harley-Davidson of Pompano in 2002, and Aspen Valley Harley Davidson in 2002.  When the new Ft. Lauderdale facility opened in December 2001, the existing store turned into the police and fleet sales division.  In October 2005 he opened “Destination Daytona” in Ormond Beach, FL, the world’s largest Harley-Davidson dealership. Destination Daytona also includes an amphitheater, restaurants, bars, and a huge vending area where, like many of friends of the industry, I have displayed my bikes and parts. The total “Destination Daytona” encompasses over 150 acres.  Another South Florida dealership, Sunrise Harley-Davidson was completed by the end of 2006 in Sunrise.  In February 2006, Bruce purchased Southern Thunder Harley-Davidson located in Horn Lake, MS. He also owned 3 Harley-Davidson stores.

More important than the Harley-Davidson empire that he created, Bruce Rossmeyer was always supportive of all those, small or big companies, making a living in this business, with a special affection he had for all Custom Builders. In addition he was an extremely active communitarian and a huge benefactor of a great number of charities

He is survived by his wife Sandy, five children (Mandy, Wendy, Randy, Will & Shelly) all involved in his businesses, and seven grandchildren. My deepest condolences to all his family, associates and friends."

My Prayers are with His Family.  When I visited his place in Ormond in February everyone I talked to refered to him personally - it shows the kind of man he was.

Bruce will truely be missed. He has made a huge impact on the Daytona Bike events. When the city of Daytona tried to run us off, Bruce stepped up and built Destination Daytona. Thanks Bruce and R.I.P. My prayers go out to his family and friends.

The truck driver, Robert L. VanValkenburg, 73, of Rock Springs, Wy., slowed down and began making a left turn and Rossmeyer tried to pass him when they collided, the highway patrol said. Rossmeyer was not wearing a helmet and VanValkenburg's turn signals and brake lights were working at the time of the crash, the report said

This is strange.
Last year Click Baldwin tried to pass a car that was turning left.
He died also.
So sad.

I never agreed with his marketing plan - "list plus an obscene $ - but I admire him as a marketing force.  Everybody knew him as the "Fatman".  I put forth that as much as we mocked him, a lot of us reveled in his success.

I wouldn't want to be him, but I stand in awe in regard to his success in the industry.

My condolences to his family and loved ones

It will be a long time before we see another "Bruce"

Ride safe guys.  I gotta admit, I'm at the first overnite on my ride to Sturgis (& seeing/meeting some of you in Deadwood) and not riding my safest today.  Splitting lanes & got REAL close (TOO close) to a large van in the process.  I'm excited about the trip, and just not riding my safest.  This is a good reminder to me, and hopefully to all of you too.  People are NOT looking for us.  I passed several people on their cellphones, another with ipod earbuds in her ears.  Ride safe guys...... and so will I!!!

Sad news indeed...   I live just a short 30 minutes from Destination Daytona and regualary ride to the Ormond Shop.  What an amazing store and event location. Bruse will be missed very much 'round here.

Prior to Destination Daytona being built folks spend the majority of their time during Bikeweek and Biketoberfest festivities down around main street. Once Destination went on-line with it's surrounding Bike builders, shops, resturant, concert stage in the same complex, the dynamics of the two yearly events took on a whole different shape.

Personally, I spent the majority of my time and $$$ up in Ormond 'round his dealship, Iron horse and Broken Spoke...  Just laid out much more open and lot's more to see and do IMHO.

His vision was amazing and he really left quite a legacy behind...

Our condolences go out to his family and closest friends.  Rest in peace Bruce.

A very timely post...I am glad you have the stones to say what you did...

I caution all of my friends going to Sturgis, especially those going for the first time, to be careful to not get caught up in the excitement to the point of riding carelessly.  Sturgis is full of every type of rider - from very skilled to barely capable of riding.  Don't trust anyone - look out for number one like you never have before.  Don't assume all those bikes in the canyons coming at you are going to stay on their side of the yellow line...  I have been to Sturgis 15 times.  My 2nd trip I witnessed 8 fatalities in 6 separate accidents.  It was incredible - we almost left and went home early.  We had the horrible misfortune of continually being at the wrong place at the wrong time.   All but one was rider error on someone's part - and mostly the one that caused the accident didn't end up being the one killed.  The one that wasn't rider error was a deer.  The worst one was on the bridge at the dam for Lake Pactola.  Someone looking at scenery crossed the centerline and drove head on into a pack of bikes stopped to turn into the visitor center.  An older couple was killed in a most gory manner...  Something I hope to never see again..

So everyone, have fun, but please ride smart and ride defensively!

I second that, ride very defensively while in Sturgis for all of the reasons listed, as well as DWI riders at night. On my 1st trip there,'98, on my very first night, I was hit from behind while riding out of Spearfish Canyon by a DWI rider (with a BSR) trying to pass my group on the right inside lane while going waaay to fast. I was leading a pack of 6 bikes and the DWI rider couldn't hold the turn through the dark and very twisty road. He hit me in the right side rear, knocking the bike out from under me.. I slid 200 ft (SD state police) into on coming traffic with my bike laying on top of my right leg.. which might have saved me as we (my bike and I) slid instead of tumbled down the road at 50-55 mph.. I actually got out of it pretty f'n good all things considered (glad it chilled out at night and i put my leather on!!!), and lucky there was no on-coming traffic. The DWI guy and his wife were not so lucky, they lived but were in pretty bad shape.. If you can avoid it don't ride at night, IMO. I've been back several times since then, a little hard-headed i guess, but I seldom ride the bike late night.. Other than that it's a blast!!

Bruce Rossmeyer was killed in a bike accident in Wyoming on the way to Sturgis.

For those not aware, Bruce owned the largest Harley dealership in the world in Daytona.

Harley Davidson tycoon Bruce Rossmeyer was sadly killed yesterday in a  motorcycle accident in Wyoming. According to rightpundits.com, he was apparently on his way to the Sturgis Bike Rally in South Dakota, when the accident happened.
Reports say that Rossmeyer, who had built his Harley Davidson empire up from nothing in 1994, was trying to pass an SUV with a trailer attached at the time and unfortunately the driver didn’t see him and he was subsequently killed.

His death has apparently sent shockwaves through the motorcycling community. Rossmeyer started off as a car dealer, but decided to start selling Harley motorcycles as a hobby.  Bruce’s “Destination Daytona store” opened in Florida in 2005.

Bruce died at the age of 66. Our prayers go out to his wife and five children.

Not to jack the thread or impune on Bruce's legacy, but there are at least ten HD dealerships claiming to be the worlds largest.
Is it volume of bikes sold?  total revenue?  Inventory? square feet?  I believe each of them takes one of those metrics and then can say World's
largest without the asterisk.

I'm very sorry to see anyone go in this manner, let alone go in any manner, but it boils down to safe riding skills.

I can't judge because I was not there, but after reading something similar to this accident report very early on in this thread, people keep saying that the RV swerved into Bruce's lane and hit him.

I can see it now.  A bunch of guys cruising up the two-laner and Bruce is next to the last one in the pack.  The first 4 guys fly by this guy that's not going very fast in this pickup truck pulling a trailer.  The guy in the truck sees them go by and puts on his turnsignal to turn off the road.  By now Bruce is fixated on being with his friends and doesn't notice the turn signals on and then all of a sudden, bammmmm, Bruce piles into the side of the truck probably going 40 to 50 mph faster than the truck when he hit it.

The guy that was behind Bruce swerved to miss the whole thing.

I've heard about this in group riding where everyone is fixated on following and one bad move takes the whole group down as a unit.  Each person is responsible for their own riding and HAS to stay alert to the changing conditions around them.

Again, I'm very sorry for the loss of Bruce and the grief his family is going through.

R.I.P. Bruce.

Slightly different with a better outcome, my buddy up in Michigan was riding not far from home on a two lane road when an older lady pulled out in front of him.  She was a quarter mile up the road but was not going very fast so he put on his turn signal and pulled out to go around her.  He told me he was committed to going around when she turned on her left turn signal to pull back into another driveway.  She hadn't travel a far down the road that that's why she didn't pick up speed down the road.  By the time he saw her starting to turn, he could only stomp on the brakes.  He went down and ended up missing the old lady, but wiped out the bike pretty bad and broke his leg in 9 places.  He was in the hospital for months and and then rehab for another 8 to 12 months.  He's back and riding again, but I think in his case ABS would have saved him.  He said that if he had not locked up the tires and could have kept it straight, he might have not hit her.

Chit happens to all of us no matter how vigilant we are in our riding.  Always expect the unexpected.  I try to never pass when there are any side roads on the opposite side of the road, just in case the person ahead of me might turn.  On my '08 SERK I went with the headlight modulator and boy did that thing get the attention.  I had people stop on the side streets that might have pulled out in front of me otherwise.  Now with the SERG, I'm not sure if it will handle both headlights or not, but I'll find out and do something to get more visibility.

Bruce Rossmeyer Dead
« Reply #39 on: August 03, 2009, 11:07:21 AM »

legendary motorcycle dealer, Bruce Rossmeyer, had been killed riding his Harley-Davidson en route to Sturgis bike rally.

Lt. Shawn Dickerson of the Wyoming Highway Patrol has described the accident as follows:

"'The pickup slowed and activated his left signal. Four of the motorcycles passed to the left. When Mr. Rossmeyer attempted to pass, the truck made its left turn and he hit the driver's side door. The sixth motorcycle swerved to the right and avoided collision.'
Rossmeyer, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from his bike and came to rest under the camp trailer, Dickerson said. He was declared dead at the scene.
Dickerson described the road as 'straight, dry and flat.'

the accident report from the Wyoming Highway Patrol which details how the incident occurred:

The roadway at the time of the crash was dry with clear weather conditions. Both vehicles were eastbound on WYO 28. Rossmeyer was traveling with a group of five other motorcycles. Rossmeyer was behind the VanValkenburg vehicle which was pulling a 2 axle camper style trailer. VanValkenburg braked and used his vehicles left turn signal to indicate he was going to make a turn from WYO 28 onto a small dirt road. VanValkenburg was in the process of making his left turn when Rossmeyer attempted to pass the VanValkenburg combination on the left. Rossmeyer collided into the drivers side door of the VanValkenburg pickup. The collision occurred near the westbound shoulder. After impact, Rossmeyer was ejected from the motorcycle and came to rest partially under the trailer near the passenger side tires. Troopers investigating this crash have determined that the turn signals and the brake lights were in working condition on the VanValkenburg combination. It is unknown why Rossmeyer did not see the turn signal/ brake lights.

Really sad to learn all this. I did have my incident with Bruce in 2003 when I purchased an aniversary bike in Ft. lauderdale.   I had everything all worked out on the phone with the sales manager, got him his cashiers check and on they way over he called to tell me that he sold my bike 15 minutes ago to another customer..  Though I wanted to give him a credit card deposit, he said it was ok to just come down with the check.  He then told me that he could get one for me in 60 days. I then told him that when i came in to shove it ups his a$$, that I wouldn't want it from you or the company you work for. About 3 months later I was buying a few parts there, was telling my story to another sales guy that felt pretty bad about the whole thing. He pointed to Bruce walking to his car and told me that he was the owner of Ft. lauderdale HD. I walked right up to him ( not really knowing who he really was) and told him what had happened with this sales manager Bob. He deeply apologized and tried to to his best to make it right with me and i did accept his hand shake and smile. Few months later a few of us found our way to Daytona to ride with him and the guys from OCC. Again I walked up to him, said hello, got a hand shake and a thank you for coming. I didn't always agree with his way of selling bikes, especially CVO bikes, but hey, he did build an empire and he will be greatly missed by many people in the MC community. I feel better now.    A little.

The Associated Press

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- Authorities say six motorcycle officers were involved in a crash while escorting the family of one of the country's largest Harley-Davidson dealers to his funeral.

A Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman says a group of motorcycle officers from various agencies was riding with the funeral party for Bruce Rossmeyer Tuesday morning in Ormond Beach. The spokeswoman says the lead rider slowed down, while the riders near the back of the group didn't, causing a chain-reaction crash.

Authorities say two officers were hurt, but their injuries weren't serious. Damage to the motorcycles was also reported as minor.

Rossmeyer died in a motorcycle crash last week in Wyoming. The 66-year-old had owned more than a dozen Harley-Davidson dealerships, most located in Florida.

What did I say above, what did I say.....  People get fixated on just what's in front of them and forget about the big picture.

I think this happened with one of flying teams where a pilot just followed another plane and there wasn't enough room for the bottom plane and he crashed.

I drove for UPS way back in the '70s and they had it right, everything that happens in your truck is your responsibility.  If someone pulls out in front of you, you should have been prepared to stop or avoid the crash.  Extreme yes, but it has become a way of life for me when I drive me car or ride my bike.

Again, I'm sorry for the crash to Bruce and his death, but the escort riders should know better than to let this happen.

Dan-  I totally agree..  and I also think that sometimes when you are riding with a group, there is more pressure on the rider that he has to "keep up" no matter what. I really don't enjoy riding in a group as much as I like with just 2 or 3 of us. I also believe that it is each man for himself out there and you do what you have to do to try to stay away from the bad guys, the other traffic and cars and trucks. I really feel bad for what has happened to Bruce Rossmeyer and it can always be one of us too. Drive smart, pay attention and when in doubt- Don't. And one more thing, a helmet can't hurt..  I'm sure I'll hear about that.  Oh well....
