« on: December 01, 2005, 07:33:06 PM »

Anyone hear anything about a supposed new 2450cc watercooled H-D motor the MoCo is purported to have filed for EPA certification ?

You're referencing this document:

http://www.epa.gov/otaq/regs/roadbike/21-harley-pres.pdf

It's not real.  Just a test application of the documents system itself.  Entirely hypothetical "vehicle" made up for the purposes of using the forms.  Somewhere down the doc it says as much.  1/3rd larger engine though; would be fun if they could build it.

If Dodge can do it, Harley can!

Twolane   you made me laugh over on the Reinhart thread, now you made me cry  I was picturing a SEEG Ultra with a 2450 V-Rod motor. Doing breather and pipe mods and having numbers around 150hp and 120ftlbs and the best part - - - - - me ridin one up over the Rockies in 6th gear.

Spider, I'd be in line for it right behind you man.  But this one was just a bureau-weenie-crat's pipe dream.

It's for real, here's the link to secret test site downunder. Notice the training wheels ?  [smiley=drink.gif]  http://www.uq.net.au/~zzlhiess/Big%20Toe.htm

Can we start an e-mail campaign to the MoCo to let them know we want this to be a reality ?  I mean I'll always love the air cooled V-Twin, but after buying my 05 SEVROD I'm sold on that motor and to think of one twice the size - - - - - - - - - -

I talked to some folks at San Diego H-D. Seems the MoCo IS experimenting with large displacement V-Rod style motors, but running into problems at cc's beyond 1250 (SE V-RODS are 1250) Also, there is the issue of power band. While they can get enough torque and hp out of these motors, they can't do it down low. So trying to put a V-Rod motor in a big ass bagger doesn't work since it bogs down until you get the revs up over 4,000. Imagine startin out from a stoplight, you and the old lady packed for Strugis and you gotta pop the clutch at 4,OOO revs Yee hah  Anyway, I think we haven't seen the biggest production air cooled V-Twin in the 103 yet. We may see a 120 or so with huge mufflers  (6") to get the performance and still meet emission/noise standards. Look at the V-Rod mufflers.

Wondering when the move to all water cooled engines just for greater ability to work on emissions reqirements is something that many here (and elsewhere) have wondered about before.  You're right, it's in interesting concept.  The power band has been a concern.  But those kinds of issues are more research and less baseline development.  If they're satisfied with the base platform they'll tinker til they get there.  Either that or they'll transplant in the V6's from the Valkyries....
