Title: Stereo wiring advice needed - disconnect for saddle bag speakers/ amp
Post by: bribe36 on March 26, 2011, 01:14:10 PM
I just finished installing the 6x9 speakers in my saddle bags and now it's time for the amp. I've got to run 8 gauge wires for the power and ground and I'm trying to come up with some ideas for quick disconnects for when I need to remove the bags. Anyone have any suggestions for what's available for an 8 GA wire?

I had Batts Racing make mine. It wasn't cheap but it was top notch work.

I use the Deutsch # DTM04-2P

I tried to take a picture, hard to get to but it is a photo.

The DTHD series Deutsch connectors accept pins that take 6-12 gauge wire (maybe 6-10, don't remember for sure).  But some of the other connector types in the Deutsch family of connectors use pins that accept up to 10 gauge.  I've squished 8 awg in to those pins a couple times when necessity required.

I don't have a closeup picture of my connector but will take one tomorrow and post it.  But in the meantime here's the gist of the install.  You can see it in the pictures in the thread below.  Its light green in color.  When I had Batts Racing make the connector I had them use different color coded wire which I shrink wrapped and ran under the tank.  I chose to make the quick connect for power and speakers, etc under the seat to protect the connectors from the elements as best as possible.  The connectors have a water seal but they're not water tight by any means.  So far, I've had the bike out in a few downpours and haven't had any issues.

<added info> OK.  Found an image.  It shows one side of the connector.

What wires are you running through the connector? They all look to be 14 - 18 GA wire. I'm mainly concerned with the heavy 8 GA power and ground wire. A connector like yours won't handle 8 GA wire, will it?

They make the same connector for the larger gauge wires as well but I see you were asking about power. This one is for the amp to crossovers. I used a different connector for the power. I'll shoot a detail if that tomorrow and post an image.

Thanks, I'd appreciate that. I've had no luck finding anything locally and I'm starting to think I'll have to construct something, that could be fun..... :confused5: :confused5: :confused5:
