'09 SERG, jump-up an RG or upgrade an '01?
« on: June 06, 2009, 05:04:04 PM »

I'm contemplating my next bike project, and after considering and rejecting several ideas, I've narrowed it down to three:
- '09 SE Road Glide
- '09 Road Glide and build it up to SE
- '01 SE RG and "modernize" it - upgrade the radio/speakers, change out the turn sigs to bullets, newer controls, aftermarket pipes, etc etc etc.

Option 3 is the cheapest, as I've seen plenty on eBay for under $15K. But most of them have lots of miles, and who knows how much life left? And the improved frame, handling, ABS and gas capacity of the '09's is tempting.

What do you guys think? Are the improvements in the '09 baggers worth the extra money?

09 Rocks as far as handling and looks.

I may some day buy a 00-01 SERG to ride and rebuild.

YES to what ever you choose. If 09 is in your choice I feel the SERG3 would be the correct choice!  :bananarock:

I sold my '05 and bought an '09 SERG, I couldn't be happier.   I may someday pick up an '01 to rebuild and tinker with, but I love the '09.   8)

The upgrade to the 09' baggers is well worth it.
Here are my thoughts on your options:
Option 1) 09' SE Road Glide. You really can't go wrong with this bike. The 110 engine problems from the prior years seem to be fixed and the SERG provides a high level of pride of ownership. As with any Harley, there are a number of things to do to personalize the SERG and to make it comfortable for each individual rider.

Option 2) 09' Road Glide and build it up to SE. You can spend a lot of money and no matter how hard you try, it still isn't a SERG. However, you can end up with a great Road Glide. If I was going to go this route, I would definitely plan to spend the money and get a custom paint job in addition to the usual chrome necessities. If you upgrade the engine, you are sure to be into the bike for a lot more than you would be if you just bought the SERG in the first place.

Option 3) 01' SE RG and modernize it. With the great handling of the 09' model Harley's, the new frame, and the availability of the ABS brake system and Brembo Brakes I wouldn't consider any older SERG unless you have lusted for the bike since it was introduced or if you didn't want to spend the big bucks of the 2 other options.

I think you should wait a few weeks more to see whats cooking for 2010.There might be a FLTRSE4 within few weeks and you might like it more than any of the other options.

My suggeation to your question would be to score a low milage  reasonably priced FLTRSE3 already upgraded with mufflers and a decent windshield and a few chrome things.
Anything with a few thousand miles on it with some accessories already installed below 29 grand is good.If your lucky enough you may find one with lowers and king tourpac.

Option 2 isnt a good idea i would assume your looking over 10 grand easy with engine upgrade and a decent paint job let alone the chrome accessories.

Well for the 3rd option, If you want a classic bike,Thats the way to go.But you cant beat stability of the new frame, ABS and trouble free 110 engine.FLTRSE3 is a charm to ride.

I would opt for the 09 due to all the frame improvements.  If you can swing it, the SE version is the way to go.

I have some interesting input here.

I just found a 01 serg with 500 miles on it.  bought it, and just came back from Americade where I put on 500 miles.

I dont have the cash for the 09 serg, but im seriously thinking for the 16k i paid for this one, i may have been better off with the 09 RG stock due to the frame and brakes, the stock motor is bigger than my 95 too!   of course the chrome bits are nice!!!

Here's an '09 on eBay for $27k now. It has the TP already. bakes, I think you did pretty well finding an '01 w/ 500 miles on it! And I have always luted over the '00's but if I could afford it, the '09 would be the way to go. Especially considering the prices on the used market.

The guy bought it to tour, but never did, and just rode his softtail instead, so it sat in his garage.

It also came with the tourpac, origional finn mufflers, cover, bla bla bla, its like a time capsule bike! so Im happy but, the techie in me keeps thinking about that new frame!!

I dont love the cd changer in the tour pac because, i use mp3's now, so its just wasted space back there, plus the radio with the tape player is outdated , you cannot plug in a 1/8" plug there , even though it has the port, because it does not function on that model.

and the ABS and brembro combo sounds awsome.  BUT, i will probably ditch the idea that it is a rare and valuable bike , and just remove the stuff I dont like and add the stuff I do!!!

I wouldnt be surprised if its the lowest milage 01 in existance. or was because now it has 1650.  It had the origional Dunlops which i was concerned about but my local shop said they were good! no dryrot, cracking or otherwise.

If you are not using the CD Changer it uses the AUX Input. Also if you search I think there is a work around to activate the aux input.
