Title: 2017 with Black Garnet color match?
Post by: richbiker on October 12, 2017, 02:56:33 PM
Has anyone else have issues with all the panels of  Black Garnet not matching?
Mine has gotten 4 new pieces and 2 of them still do not match the rest of the bike.
The worst one is the right saddle bag it looks like they did not change it.

The only thing I have noticed is at certain angles the paint on the outer saddlebag doesn't look like it matches the lid, but then I change viewing angle and it does.  That's about all I have noticed. When you say 'panels" what are you referring to?

Panels meaning painted parts.   The front fender, left side cover, right lower fairing, and the right saddle bag (not the lid) were all lighter then the rest of the bike(in the sun)  the lower fairing was so bad even in the garage you could see a difference.  The dealer has replaced all these and the fender and the side cover are now perfect but the right saddle bag is still too light, the right lower fairing is closer but the fairing cap(which they did not replace) and the fairing lower still do not match.

Well, if the dealer replaced the parts you KNOW it was bad.

Keep on having the dealership replace parts until they all match.  Eventually I would imagine Harley will stop honoring the claims and tell the dealer to cease and desist, if they haven't already.

I have no idea which company is painting CVO parts these days, but I'm sure the dealership does.  Ask them to contact the vendor directly and ask for help in resolving the issues.  There should be a color standard for each color (in the auto biz they were small metal panels painted under laboratory conditions).  When you have parts of various shades, you need such as standard to identify which parts are right and which parts are not.  You also have to understand that nothing is absolute, there will be a certain amount of allowable variation, especially with metallic paints.

The Dealer is now sending one of the rear Filler panels to H-D so they can match a good piece.

I sent dealer a picture of right saddlebag lower in the sunlight and they say they'll contact HD and see what they want to do.  Uh.......I have a suggestion.

Sounding like what we went through in 2006, it was a mess.

Wrongway, how could HD possible argue that paint is not a defect issue?

I'm taking the bike to the dealer and they'll take their own pics for Harley.  One step at a time.

Here are the 2 pieces that I am still not happy with.  Right lower saddle bag and right lower fairing(not the lower fairing cap).

Rich, that's the same side and area of the bag I have my problem with.  Everyone at the dealer acknowledged it and I think HD is going to replace it.......waiting to hear for sure.

That picture is of the replacement part. I sure hope the next one is better.

Your replacement part looks like my original part so I'm losing confidence the replacement will be any better.

A discussion about this thread occurred during dinner tonight and the general thought was, Why DID you buy this bike if the color match was so bad? We as a group would all have passed because getting parts replaced, trying to get matches was never going to be easy, it was just a stress producing deal. So Why?

I, for one, didn't see the bike in the direct sunlight before I bought it (cloudy day).  Even if I had, it'd have had to been at a certain angle to notice the mismatch (which I didn't see for 3 weeks).  In all other light there is no perceivable mismatch unless you really knew where to look for it and inspected with a light.  Maybe the solution is another CVO as soon as they come out with a color I like better!

I pointed the paint problem out to the salesman before buying and he said that H-D would fix the parts that did not match and this was the only CVO they had or within a reasonable distance. I had no bike at the time because I totaled my last bike when I hit a deer. I did not want to miss out on any riding trying to find a bike.

They replaced 4 parts and the seat had a blemish on it and 2 are good now. So I am hoping this go around they get the next 2 correct.

My replacement saddlebag lower has been authorized by HD so now I'll hold my breath that it matches.

I previewed the replacement saddlebag lower and it looks fine in the sun (compared next to defective lower).  Install on Friday.

New bag is on, oddly, it still looks a little different in the direct sun when on the sidestand, but definitely better.  It really depends on the viewing angle because when you move away and to the rear its fine.  It's also fine when in direct sun and the bike is upright.

wow your dealer must have pull with HD.   My dealer says they are still waiting for the parts?

Now they are telling me H-D wants to sent the bad parts to the painting company that does the cvo's.  Which means bike will be down until parts get back.   NOT HAPPY.  I think for the 42k I spent they should offer a loaner.

I could see them doing that if they don't have a set of your color tins in stock, or if they're concerned the new ones won't match with the other pieces on your bike.

Why no loaner?

Update
Dealer sent saddle bag and right lower fairing to "Calibre" and their reply was "2 paint Experts reviewed the parts and are painted to standard"   and HD corp per the hotline says they will do nothing because Calibre says it is within standards.
Again Harley standards are sub par, and customer service is right there too.

Yup I have been to the top of the food chain with this problem. Harley told me it was flake variation. total crap on HD's part. they are just cheap piles of crap now. Time to look for another Manufacture that will stand behind the product. I bought mine on a cloudy day also. It's a bike you just ride in the dark I guess. This bike makes me so angry it just sits in the garage with a cover on it till I can trade it in on a real bike!! I told HD Warranty dept. The motor company needs to shut all the dealers doors unless the sun is out if they can't put a good paint job on a $42.000.00 bike.
