Title: Changing the LED Color
Post by: 93-331-29psi on June 03, 2014, 09:51:56 PM
I've been tossing around the idea of putting the blue Dakota Digital kit on my bike and will also get the black with blue LED fuel gauge/cap kit from the P&A catalog.  The one thing which will need attention is the RED LED CVO emblem on the tank console.  I've not taken it apart yet to see what all this entails, but I'm hoping others here may be able to answer this question.  Is the tank console LED red or is it the console emblem itself that's red???  Yes I know the radio is red but I'm replacing that as well.

Yep, can be done. I did mine with 3 LEDs. The stock LED is a flat panel LED similar to this only much slimmer and of course HD specific:

Does the service manual describe how to remove the cover on the tank dash?

After doing the 3 LEDs and having it for a while, I decided I didn't like how the blue light from 3 spaced LED didn't produce an even field of blue (had light and dark areas that was bugging me).
I researched and found this; a blue EL panel and 12V converter ($30 through adafruit.com):

12V converter mounted w/double side tape:

EL panel placed and then secured w/double sided tape:

Final product, a uniform glowing CVO Blue!

That looks awesome.

Can you add some detail to the extent of effort to wire in the new light?

Hardly any effort. I cut the stock lead after the disconnect and wired in the inverter. The other end of the inverter has a plug for the EL panel which has a corresponding plug. Takes longed to remove the seat and dash panel than wire it.
