Can anyone recommend some bars for my Skunk?
« on: April 09, 2012, 10:10:44 AM »

Hi all, I am trying to find a replacement handlebar that will move my hands back about 2". I find I am reaching slightly forward. I already have had a seat modified which has done a good job but getting a bit more pullback on the bars might help.

I would like to stay with black as that is stock but would consider others. I did read that the Wild One bars might be a good replacement but the sizes have me a little confused as to which one(s) would work.

Also, I am hoping that finding some that work would accept the stock wiring/cables. Anyone else made a change or looked into this?

Thanks in advance   K

Bars are tough to choose and every one has their own opinion on whats best and whats the most comfortable.  I would recommend trying to loosing up the stock handlebars and pull them back a little more towards you for now. And during big rides, bike nights, rallies, and events, etc. keep your eyes open and if you find a bike with a set of bars you may like ask the owner of the bike if you can throw a leg over and see how they feel.  This will save you a lot of time and money trying to find the best set of bars that will have the look and fit you want.

Thanks Cory. Yes thats probably the best way rather than guessing on a new set that dont work. I did rotate the bars a little closer as well but still need the little extra. I was taking a long shot and hoping another 2012 CVO RG owner might have looked into it. :)

I do have the stock bars HD part # ( 55800171) and will try to get the dimensions as well as this might also help me find some after market ones.

Just a suggestion.....Heritage bars work very well on the Road Glide.  I don't think you  even have to change out the cables!!!!   Good luck!!

Heritage bars are good and no cable change is needed but I have found they're hit or miss with folks. For me it was a miss. The wrist angle was very awkward for me and it hurt after not too long on the road with them. I had them on an old '10 RKC and changed them out ASAP. I have not ridden my new toy yet, but sitting on it today the stock bars seem like they will be a good fit for me, but I have long arms so I can relate to what she's saying with having to reach forward. Hopefully just adjusting the stock bars will fix it.

Keep us posted.

Take a look at what I modified and then sent to a custom handlebar fabricator. I also was looking for 2" higher and more pull back. I did not like all the alternitives. At the end of the thread is the before and after mounted pics . They are 1 1/4 bars.............................................Fuzz

Heritage bars are what comes on the 12 FLTRXSE from the MOCO.

Every measurement as far as width, rise, pull back, angle is exactly the same as my wifes 2009 Heritage.

These bars have a 10 rise.

Thanks D  Thats good info about the stock bars as I just need a bit more of a pullback. I have them rotated as close as I can now. I am looking at the Wild 1 612 or 614 as I think they may come back a little more than stock. Also trying to avoid wiring/ new cables etc if possible.

other view from more distance,
the bar still can be modified and
no changing of cable necessary.

Fuzz.  you did an amazing job on your bars..  Not too many of us have the time or patiance to attempt customizing handlebars,  let alone finding someone who can.  She is better off just trying different ones out by asking to sit on a bike at some get together or something like that..   just my HO..  yours look great, I couldn't haver attempted that one either.  :nixweiss:

Those Heli-bars look awesome and look like they have a lot of flexibility to adjust. A little pricey for a one time fitment for me.

My husband had a good idea and we might order a set of Wild One Outlawz 12" and a set of 14" at the same time. Then we could mock them up on the bike and return the other set in the same box.

Anyone know if i would have to get new cables etc with the 12 or 14?

Thx  K

In my emails to them inquiring about their Chubby Apes in 12" and 14" they told me I would need new cables for both. Would assume same thing for the Outlawz.....

My local bike shop just installed the 12" Outlaws on my CVO RG. No new cables needed as the width is not as drastic as the normal Chubby's 12" Apes. (not sure of part no.)  You just need to relocate the clutch cable and have some patience fitting all the wires through the 45 degree angle at the base of the bars.  Call Steve at Wild Ones and he will confirm.

It took me a little while to get used to them after having Wild One 14" Apes on my street glide. The pull back is less than the normal Wild Ones, they are almost (but not quite) akin to a drag bar feeling.  Fists facing forward verses out to the side a little. I just put 400 miles on them between yesterday afternoon and today and I could have kept going.

Good luck! :bananarock:

CVOBO   Thanks those pics really help. Do you think if I rotated the bars maybe a couple inches toward me the cables would be too tight?

CVOBO,  Those outlaws look very good on you bike.  I'm trying hard to decide what to do on mine, keep stock which are not comfortable after 300 miles for me or go to either the Outlaws  or the regular wild 1 apes.

Which do you feel is more comfortable the wrist angle of the Outlaws or the WO572(14 inch wild1 apes)?

Also trying to decide between 12 and 14 inch, I am 6'1".

It seems the stock bars do not have enough pull back for me, I lean into them which causes a ache in my shoulder blades and upper back I believe.

Thanks

I saw those bars on a bike once and the owner said they were the best bars he ever owned!  They are totally awesome looking and the different adjustments make it very easy to fit any rider....I just can't wrap my head around the price  :vrolijk27:  but with that being said, a $35K mc isn't much good if you can't get comfortable reaching the bars.

Thanks

I would say that the Outlawz don't have as much pull back as the WO572 and frankly the WO572s were a bit more comfortable in terms of pullback and I would also say wrist angle. Although I found myself wanting a bit less wrist angle on the WO572 I think the Outlawz are just a tad too much. I am 6'0" and I have a 30 inseam.  I find that my arms are almost locked at the elbow, but not quite and that most of the ache in my hands occurs at the index and middle finger, whereas it used to occur on my ring and pinky on the WO572. (not sure if this is making any sense)  That said, I am getting used to them and I am going to let them ride for awhile. However, despite the fact that there may not be as much pull back as I would like, my shoulders do not ache as I am not really leaning over into the bars more like hanging on a little.  My main factor in deciding was that the 12"  Outlawz bars did not require any new cables, so the cost was right.

If I were considering 14" and the costs involved I would go with the WO572; just my opinion.

And

Do you think if I rotated the bars maybe a couple inches toward me the cables would be too tight?

I think you have room. Not sure about this but since the cables are already fixed to the bars and the base of the bars will remain in a fixed position shouldn't you be able to move the bars along the axis of the mount in any direction?  (Basically the distance between the center of a circle and the boarder of the circle is constant)

Hope this helps and it stops raining in South Florida!

CVOBO,

Thanks for the response above although it was not I who asked I wanted to know the same thing. I think you have pretty much convinced me on the Chubby Ape's VS the Outlawz, I am just torn on 12" VS 14", and everyone always says I wish I would have gone higher than I originally did.

It will be more of a cost, but I know with 10" bars I won't be happy in the long run. My other issue is trying to find black braided stainless clutch and cable lines that match the ones on my bike from the factory.........

Fire-Medic,

Sorry for the confusion, I combined my response to 2 separate questions.

I had the 12" on my Streetglide initially and spent another grand putting the 14" on after all was said and done.   I do know that you still need to change cables on the 12" Chubby's non-outlaw version.  So the cost is basically the same on 12" as it is on the 14".  I was very happy with the 14" on my Streetglide. I rode 600 in a day out at sturgis and could have kept on going.

Good luck!

CVOBO,

Thank you for the detailed answer.  I am thinking the WO572 sound more and more like the bars for me.  My fatboy has WO518, 35.5 wide and 14.25 pull back and 60 wrist angle.

I think they have a tad too much angle on a 500 mile day, pull back is perfect and I like the width.

The 572 are one inch wider so that is not much different at all.  The pull back is two less, but the rise is 8.5 more so I will not be reaching down.

I love the looks of the outlawz, but am worried the 22 wrist angle is not enough and the width would most likely be ok, but the pull back seems to be a lot less.

Thanks

I have 14" Outlaws and needed new cables. Was told 12" do not require new cables.
