Title: Garmin 2620 GPS
Post by: 16HD117 on February 25, 2005, 08:34:43 AM
Has anyone installed a Garmin model 2610 or 2620 GPS on their SEEG or any other Electra Glide model?

Seeing that computors are not friends of mine the idea of a GPS on the bike is tough.

But I like the thought of a device that will accurately ( and accurate is very important to me)
show speeds reached.

So  whats the best one going?
And where can a mount be purchased from? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

The "FIND NEAREST BAR" function is the best feature of all!

Good answer WFP!

And I could have the bars sectioned into

1) Drinking bars
2) T***y   bars
3) sushi bars
4) Grizzley bars (typically a spouse of those that work at #2)

The only thing I did before mounting the parts was shrink some heat-shrink over the u-bolt to insulate against the metal-to-metal contact on the handlebar.

Great Tip!

Ram mounts also has a chrome clamp instead of the u-bolt. It looks so much better. When I get home tonight I'll post a picture.

I use a Garmin 2610 mounted with a 3" RAM Mount to a chrome clamp.  (See photo below).

I would have loved to do something like that but couldn't find a piece to work with the larger outside diameter of the Wild 1 handlebars.  So I ended up using the u-bolt setup for now.  Then made a mount out of balsa that's very much like the piece pictured and then sent the balsa off to a buddy at a machine shop to copy it out of aluminum.  When I get that back I'll get it chromed and (hopefully) have a better looking mount than the u-bolt.

From the drivers seat; does the gps block your view of the top gauge?
I have a garmin 276 and on the right side it partially obstructs the top right gauge.

Does the gps vibrate much with the ram mount?

Here is an unfortunately relatively poor pic of a 2620 on the left bar.  Doesn't give a lot of perspective.  Enough, however, to show that it can be mounted without blocking your view of any of the instruments.   I can set the mount such that the 2620 is pretty much tucked in behind the windscreen without it blocking the view of any other instrument.

Don,

How about vibration with the ram mount?
The mount I am using now is rock steady, but it blocks my $100+ oil temperature gauge  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I am thining about switching to the ram mount, maybe even mounting one of the ball/baseplate to the fairing right above the oil temp.

I don't remember. I'll check when I get home tonight. Vibration isn't a problem. The two rubber ball mounts help with that.

Everyone,

Just purchased an Garmin 2620, reviewed the past posts and got some great input on choice for RAM Mounts.

I do not have it yet, how does the unit power up Cigar Lighter adapter? Also notice can be hard wired to battery.

Previously using the Garmin GPS III.

Here's two harnesses that work really well with the 2620 and the SEEG.

First, you can get the power/audio cable from Cycoactive.

I got the DC/Audio cable mentioned in the next post but didn't use it the way it's manufactured to be used.  It's a cable that's desighed to be hard wired to a power source.  So you'd take it someplace like the aux power connector on the cig ligher plug inisde the fairing.

If you do that, however, then you've always got a stub of wire sticking out of the fairing.  Since I only care about having the GPS unit on the bike if I'm on the road I didn't want the wire sticking out all the rest of the time.

So used that cable and got a nice little cig lighter/power plug from Radio Shack.  It's got a push type wire release and an externally serviceable mini fuse right on the plug.  Then just shortened the purchased harness to a nice length and voila, a slick clean functional install that (GPS and all) is on or off the bike in 60 seconds flat.

You're gonna love the 2620.  The RAM mount won't be a problem so far as vibration is concerned (at least it hasn't been in just about 5000 miles of on bike operation on mine).  If you go with the audio connections also as is described in the next post that's an even greater benefit.  You're going to find, however, that the software in the unit is so intuitive that the audio really is unnecessary if you don't want to use it or mess with the extra connections to the front of the radio.

Good luck!
