Title: Water Pump failed, replacement advice wanted
Post by: Jbbrown73 on June 16, 2018, 02:57:13 PM
My water pump has definitely shot craps. Has anyone replaced one of these themselves? Is the vacuum pump referenced in the service manual required if I don't drain the system, just change the pump? Any pointers for changing this are appreciated.

It took me 2 hours or so.  I replaced thermostat and water pump as they are connected by a 1/2” hose.  Order both, you need 3”  of heater hose and a couple of clamps. You really need a manual to.   Pull one hose off pump to drain.  Take 1 bolt out of stat and then pump and stat will pull out after unhooking wire from pump.  Pump mounts in rubber and rubbers slide into frame hooks.

After everything hooked up, fill radiator with a turkey Baster until full.  Then turn ignition on and roll throttle til pump and fans run and check continue filling til full.  Then fill reservoir.

Check for leaks.  Start. Done.

Many failures is a broken wire inside pump housing and just need to be re soldered.

There's a bosch pump that looks similar but the plug in is different. It's $98 dollars if you could get a plug re-wired. We just had 2 pump failures on a ride to South Dakota and back. One was at 32,000 miles and one was at 22,000 miles which is BS.
