Tail light flasher
« on: November 28, 2006, 08:10:58 AM »

I want to install a tail light flasher on a bike with a tour pak running/brake light.  Has anyone installed the Backoff product or any other so that the tour pak lights do the flashing?  Will one unit control all the bulbs of the tour pak light?  Anyone know how many bulbs are used?  Ideally, I would like to install one or more of these devices so the entire rear flashes when i hit the brakes.  Call me paranoid but out here in Arizona we have lots of old folks that shouldn't be driving.  Thanks

Hey guys here's a solution that includes the turn/brake conversion with an LED strip light across the tour pak on the SEUC.  IROAR, I see this a bit off your question but the solution may get your problem solved with the tail/turn lights.

This thread will take you through a lot of info on the install.

It does not have the blinking Back off product but the LED bulbs are available with a spinning flasher light.

From another thread, here is the bulb.

I was thinking also, what in the hell is the dealer talking about.

I was thinking also, what in the hell is the dealer talking about.  How can more brake light bi illegal?

We aren't changing how close the brake and turns are delivered from the factory.  Anyway, there are more dealers in Arizona than one and it isn't a difficult conversion to do yourself either.

Good luck guys, as you can see from the LED light thread, many of us have done it and for exactly the reason you state, SAFETY.
Roger,
I believe it is a DOT standard. Can't remember where I read it, but in one of the threads it was mentioned that the H-D Brake/Turn Signal (run all the time) part showed not applicable for some bikes however the part could be made to work. In this same thread I believe it was discovered that DOT requires a certain amount of space between the brake light and turn signal lights to have them all on at the same time.

The 'd00d is correct, the issue is the narrow light bar supplied on the CVO bikes.  If you look up the run/turn/brake controller in the catalog, the restriction is tied to the narrower light bar.

OK, but if you already have a brake light in the middle, and a turn signal X inches away, how does making the turn signals brake/turns change anything here when you are not impacting the distance between the Center brake light and the turn signal.

I know I'm missing something here.

Ah hell with the beauracrats anyway, I already have 'em so I guess I won't worry about it.

Maybe thats why the Canadians don't have them changed out.  Almost everyone of them ride stock.

I think I'll take a nap. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Yes magicl1,
Those LED lights all are Harley ones and the spoilers were painted by the Moco.I ordered them the day my bike came in since the dealer didn't know what color they were getting. They came several weeks after I picked up the bike and had the dealer do the install. The side LEDs and rear fender LED bar were installed before I took delivery.
I have been very happy with the Haze paint and bike so far. 8-)
I also got the LED bar on the leather Tour Pak. I think this may be the best location for safety in the back.I like having a running and brake light at driver's eye level.
When you look at a bike from the back especially in a car, lower lights can be hidden by the hood of the car.
What some have said already about the tail light/turn signal conversion does have some merit. If you experiment with a bike and look at it from some distance you will see how the lights if they are close can merge together into one light ball and it's hard to judge distance to it or identify direction or even detect a turn signal rapidly and expect a car driver to register your intentions. It also allows a driver to misjudge how wide your bike really is if the lights are all centered in a small cluster.
If you spread your lights out such as on the Tour Pak, saddlebag lids and fender you set up a large light pattern, especially at night you will look bigger. If you leave your turn signals yellow they will get a driver''s attention in your pattern of red lights and the driver will know that you are turning and in which direction.
Light modulators (flashers) can add some degree of safety by calling attention to the light compaired to a steady light ,especially in a headlight during the daytime.
I would have reservations about a rear flashing light since there is some truth that a flashing light draws the attention of drunk drivers and they tend to hit the light since they focus in on it. Ever see the video of a police car or ambulance stopped along the road and a car runs right into it? That was a person who kept staring at the flashing light and drove right into it. More common than most people realize I bet. 8-)

I've ordered the "Backoff " product that alternates from one side to the other.   I will try to install it  in the tour pak between the shell and the liner.  If successful, will post pictures.  Thanks everyone for your input.

I'm not sure where to find it but I did post something a couple of years back on what I used, along with a circuit connection diagram, to flash the tourpak spoiler, the saddlebag spoliers, and the tailight when braking. Can't remember but I think they all flash 3 or 5 times before going solid. Works very well despite what the laws may dictate.

Received my back off wig wag taillight flasher from Signal dynamics www.signaldynamics.com/products/Modules/wigwag.asp  The intent was to install it so that the tour pak lights would flash.  The instructions allowed you to wire it so the left and right tour pak lights would alternate quickly and cycle to steady on or repeat the flashing cycle.  Since the brake light was to be steady on, I elected the continuous flashing.  After reading the instructions it looked like a 40 minute project for a competent "wrench type."  I allowed 3 hours and used every bit of it.

The instructions suggested installation under the seat.  I don't think that would work unless you add several lengths of wire.   The easier way to do it is by installing it under the tour pak liner.  The brake light wire splits and goes to each of the 2 tail lights in the tour pak at that location. You connect the back off upstream before they split and downstream after the split to each branch.  The final connection is the ground wire.  It works great and should provide some additional visibility for the elderly or distracted drivers out here in Arizona.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

So it flashes only when you brake then?

When you apply the brakes the device signals the left and right side of tour pak lights to flash rapidly 3 or 4 times each.  Upon completion they do it again at a slower pace.  After the cycles are complete you have the option to wire it to repeat the cycle or steady on.  Since my standard tail/brake light is steady on , I chose the option to repeat the cycle. The flashing from side to side is why the call it the "wig wag"

Look at Hyperlite.com They have a set of LED pods that will fit into the cutout of the right and left sides on the laydown license plate bracket. I drilled a hole thru the license plate and the back bracket and mounted with double stick tape (supplied W/ Lights). They flash 5 times then go steady. These things are WICKED bright. Am thinking about another set down low on the filler strip between the fender and saddle bags. If not ok with DOT I'll take my chances with the judge!!!
